Ten years ago, Histoire & Collections published a book entitled Tanks of World War Two, which contained hundreds of color profiles and 3/4 views by Jean Restayn. This book was a great success but has been sold out for too long. So the time has come to publish a completely renewed version, with many additions.
In this volume the proper tanks, battle tanks and light tanks, of every nation, which were involved in the various campaigns of WWII, from Poland to Berlin and from Libya to Normandy, from the earliest Panzer I to the latest British Cruiser tank, are represented in full color.
Two additional volumes are scheduled in this Encyclopedia: Volume Two will be devoted to tank destroyers, self-propelled artillery and special purpose AFVs, while Volume Three will include the various types of wheeled armored cars and miscellaneous armored vehicles.

Fantastic Illustrations, Weak on Information.
By Gary Gillespie
The Encyclopedia of Tanks of World War II is an excellent book for what it is. In reality this book could be 4 times bigger to fulfill the project as a true encyclopedia of tanks. Most criticize the book for what it isn't rather than what it is.
On the positive side this is a book which gives the left profile of hundreds of tanks from nearly every nation that produced tanks in World War II. It includes many of the major nations like USA, Soviet Union, Germany, Great Britain, Japan. It also has tanks, from many minor countries like Romania, France, Croatia and more.
It shows the left profile of hundreds of tanks with their various camouflage throughout the war. Many of the profiles are of the same tank like Pnather, Tiger and Sherman but showing differnt camouflage schemes.
If you want a book which shows camouflage for hundreds of tanks as a painting guide, this is the book would be very helpful. Winter, desert, Russian front and almost every other major campaign is covered. Dozens of different camouflage patterns are depicted. It covers all the major tanks like Tiger, Panther, Sherman, but also includes numerous lesser known tanks from minor countries.
I highly reccommend this book as a primer of World War II tanks and its camouflage.
What the book is not....
There is very scant information given on each tank. There is basically only about one or two sentences about each tank but it gives almost no statistics in terms of production numbers or capabilities.
Giving only the left side profile of course means that it does not give a front, rear, right profile or an above view either. You of course therefore do not have a full composite of the camouflage or tank details for the entire tank.
I really enjoy the book and feel it is a good investment if you desire to see the camouflage of numerous tanks of World War II I can recommend it highly. There are so many tanks in this book which are very obscure and limited in production it will educate anyone in the various tanks from many nations. If you are looking for in depth information as to production numbers, vital statistics of the vehicles then you would be better to look elsewhere.
If you are a military artist who is looking for painting tanks in various camouflage schemes then I am hard pressed to think of a better all around work.

Great reference guide for wargamers and modellers
By McWong
Rivet counting modellers may, or may not find this book useful depending on the depth of detail they're looking for. But any wargamer out there looking for a comprehensive painting guide for their tanks will find this book a "must have".
With a comprehensive number of colour plates of tanks serving through all the stages and all the theatres of WW2, this book easily replaces the dozen or so Osprey's I have as a quick reference guide. Restayn has focused on delivering as wide a survey as possible of the various colour and camo schemes used, but there isn't the depth you will get from a specialised Osprey title and there is next to no information on the tanks themselves. Again, not a big issue if you're using this as a painting guide.
The only drawback of the book is that, like nearly every other book on this subject, there is a huge emphasis on the Axis vehicles. It would of been great to see as much attention paid to the various colours and camo's of (as an example) the M3 Stuart tank as the 38T. But at the end of the day when I need to know what sort of tri colour camoflague I should paint my Panzer Lehr Panthers for a Normandy campaign, what sort of olive drab my 1st Armoured Sherman's would be during the Anzio battles - this is the first book I reach for.
