An absolute MUST for A&P I and II

There is no way I would have passed this class without this book. It contains tons of problems and questions directly related to each section of the text book. By doing all of the problems I was able to learn the material without much further study. The fact that my teacher took most of her test questions from this book was also a big bonus.

Educated in part by French nuns, she was involved early on in her life with Communist Party youth organizations and children's groups. Since moving to Paris in the 1960s, Kristeva has risen in stature in intellectual circles so that she is now regarded as one of the most important thinkers of the contemporary era. EXTRACT FROM CHAPTER 7: “JULIA KRISTEVA'S THEORY OF LOVE”: For Julia Kristeva, love embodies both the semiotic and the symbolic, both knowledge and joy (pace Baruch de Spinoza), both language and affect. Kristeva has written of love in a way that is not facile, demeaning, banal, stereotypical, sexist or pornographic. Her pronouncements on love are quite different from those in the ‘classic' texts of love, such as Ovid's poems, or the mediaeval Art of Love, or Elizabethan sonnet sequences, or Stendhal's De l'Amour, or Denis de Rougement’s L’Amour et l’occident (Love in the Western World). When Kristeva writes - Vertigo of identity, vertigo of words: love, of the individual, is that sudden revelation, that irremediable cataclysm, of which one speaks only after the fact. Under its sway, one does not speak of. (“In Praise of Love”) - it seems right and thankfully free of the usual embarrassment of chauvinism that marks much writing about love. Julia Kristeva evokes the wildness of love, the loss of self and the eruption of desire, without sounding idiotic. When Kristeva writes that in love one assumes the right to be extraordinary, it is a great description of being in love. Kristeva is right to describe love as the inrush of total subjectivity, an infinity of subjectivity. In Kristeva’s psycho-poetic reading, love’s the inrush of the totally extraordinary, but at the expense of commonsense (as lovers learn, painfully): Love is the time and space in which “I” assumes the right to be extraordinary. Sovereign yet not individual. Divisible, lost, annihilated; but also, and through imaginary fusion with the loved one, equal to the infinite space of superhuman psychism. Paranoid? I am, in love, at the zenith of subjectivity. How great this first chapter of Histoires d’amour is, as great as Stendhal’s De l’Amour or Sigmund Freud’s The Ego and the Id, or Jacques Lacan’s �crits. Kristeva describes love as a transgressive, sometimes violent wildness (D.H. Lawrence’s term 'infinite sensual violence' is apposite here). LOVE AND ART AND MORE, OH MUCH MORE

Julia Kristeva is a French philosopher and feminist writer who has produced a huge body of work, going back to the 1960s. She is a remarkable thinker by any standards, but some of her ideas can be a little tricky and avant garde to grasp at first (the chora, the semiotic realm, the abject, etc). She uses a good deal of psychology, drawing on Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan, as well as cultural theory.
This book by Kelly Ives I found useful because it was clearly written, unlike too much of contemporary theoretical criticism. Ives steers clear of using jargon for the sake of it, or for showing off to other cultural critics. I mean, there are people who write about Kristeva who seem to be complicated for the sake of it, and there's no need for that (and no time for it either!).
And although Kristeva's work can be dense at times, her ideas are definitely worth pursuing. I particularly enjoy her writings on love and emotion (collected in her book Tales of Love). Kristeva has some truly extraordinary things to say about love - quite individual, quite unlike any other writer on love and feelings, but very illuminating.
As well as love, Kristeva has also written extensively about art and the artist - especially valuable are her views on the relation of making art to depression and heightened emotions. This book also explores these fascinating ideas, which say so much about being an artist - about the costs and the problems of being an artist, as wel as the joys and achievements.

About the Author
Mary Jo Bowie is the owner of Health Information Professional Services in Binghamton, New York which provides medical record consultative services for various health facilities for over 25 years. She served as an instructor in the Health Information Technology Program at Broome Community College for over fifteen years, teaching such courses as Inpatient Coding, Ambulatory Care Coding, Quality Assurance, Survey of Healthcare and Computers in Healthcare. Ms. Bowie is now the Health Information Management and Medical Coding program director at Mount Wachusett Community College and an associate professor. She develops all course content within the curriculum to include ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS courses, CPT/HCPCS courses, Introduction and Advanced Health Data courses to name a few. Ms. Bowie is a registered Health Information Administrator and an accredited Health Information Technician. She is an active member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and is also an AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS approved Train the Trainer. She served on the New York State Health Information Association Board of Directors from 1989 to 1991 and was education director and on the Ambulatory Coding Guideline Committee. Mary Jo Bowie was the New York State nominee for the National Award for Literacy Contribution to Profession, 1993 and 1994. She is a National and Regional speaker on ICD-9-CM, CPT and ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS, as well as a course writer for Cengage Learning. Ms. Bowie holds an Associate of Arts Degree, a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Master of Science Degree. She has conducted over 50 national training seminars on ICD-10-CM/PCS coding.

Regina Schaffer is a Reimbursement Educator Specialist for United Health Services in Johnson City, New York. She works with approximately 45 providers educating them on both ICD-9 and CPT coding. Ms. Schaffer also works as a consultant in Binghamton, New York and is an instructor in the Health Information Technology Program at Broome Community College. Ms. Schaffer is an active member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), past secretary for the local AAPC Chapter from 2000 to 2002 and is a frequently requested speaker on ICD-9-CM and CPT Coding. Ms. Schaffer co-authored UNDERSTANDING ICD-9-CM and UNDERSTANDING PROCEDURAL CODING with Ms. Mary Jo Bowie. She is an accredited Health Information Technician, a Certified Professional Coder and holds a Bachelor of Science degree.

Having the ability to have my text book on my I-pad is great. I take my I-pad with me everywhere I go. If I have a few spare minutes at the office or waiting for an appointment, I can spend the time doing some reading. I wish all textbooks were available on my I-pad.

From winning at sports to winning at business!

As an ex-coach of midget sports teams, I identified with the author's approach to developing a winning team. Over the years, my teams and I visualized ourselves as winners, talked about the necessary skills and attitude that it was going to take to reach our goal, worked to develop those skills and concentrated on how each player's strengths played to the team. In The Business of Winning the author demonstrates how he effectively identified, analyzed and documented the achievements he had on the playing field and brought that strategy successfully into the workplace. It is very impressive that he is unselfishly sharing his successful approach with his peers. He is definitely a team player who wants everyone on his team and his company to win. This is a must read for every coach, every parent, and every teacher, as well as every manager.

Finally, something I can use!

This book was like nothing I've read before. A legitmate business book that taught me things I could use tomorrow. But it didn't bore me to death like too many other management books. It was an easy read, is loaded with insight, has a terrific story, and lots of anecdotes about successful coaches and leaders. A good mix.

The correlation between sports and business has always been intriguing to me. I've just been waiting for someone to develop a valid process and quantify the results so I can apply it. Nice work, Good read. The underlying hockey story is compelling.

Awesome Book by an awesome author whom you will fall in love with

Wow! Wow! Wow! This is the third book in a series, but I do think you could read it without having read the others. That being said, I will say DON’T read it without reading the others because you will be doing yourself a disservice. The first two books in the series are about Blake and Liane. This one is about their son, Carter. L. L. Collins has this knack of pulling readers in with realistic characters and situations. These are real people with real problems. They are human and make mistakes. But, they love with all they have. While I read on of her books I feel every thought and every emotion through actions and words. You will be blessed with reading this book. The prologue explains Carter’s past. If you read the other Twisted books then you will know what poor Carter has gone through. His past has shaped him. Let me rephrase that, what his “dad” did in his past shaped him. And, I’m not talking about Blake. That would be the evil Ronan from the first two books. Carter is a character who changes throughout the book. His parents, Julia, and even Julia’s family changes who Carter thinks he is. Carter has just graduated and covets an internship in Denver. The first day there he meets the boss’ daughter, Julia. Whoo!! Hoo!! But, being who he is he fights every emotion. I. Like. Julia. She is blunt with Carter making her exactly what he needs. I’m not sure which Carter I like the best. Jealous Carter? Sexy Carter? Loving Carter? Mad Carter? Scared Carter? He has so many facets. I loved the games that these two played while getting to know each other. One of my favorite scenes was when Carter was chatting with a little boy named Garrett. That was precious. I love the way that L. L. Collins incorporates music within her books. There is always a playlist at the end to go along with the book. My favorite quote from the book would be: “Because love not only shows up, it stands up. This is me, standing up for you.” I am honored to have read such a great story. I love Carter, Julia, and Carter’s family. And, I must say that L. L. Collins made me even begin to like Julia’s family at the end. I can’t say enough about this book. I promise that you will enjoy every second. If you have never read anything by this author before, then you have found a new favorite. Dual point of view. No cliffhanger.

** I received this book as an ARC for a honest review** Okay with that being said I also bought a copy. That's how much I loved it.
I have all eight of her books I have bought them one by one and then got the box set.

What can I say Carter wants his dream job and nothing and nobody will get in the way of that. Until he meet the gorgeous Julia and Carter doesn't know what happens to his world.

Trust me you will not be disappointed in this book. Can't wait to see what L.L. Collins does next.

Both my sons (ages 1 & 3) love this book - it's their favorite bed-time story, with it's colorful illustration and fun/humorous storyline. They even pretend to read the story themselves, as they point to the egg on Thomas' nose & giggle. It's a delightful storybook for little ones.

I like this book because it is funny. Thomas the Tank-Engine stars in this book. But there's also his friend Percy in this book. I have read this story on the Salty's Secret DVD at the Read-Along storybook at the Fun & Games Shed. I really suggest that you get this book and read it to your children. Thanks! A pulmonologist point of view.

Couple of years ago I borrowed the fist edition (the only edition at the time) from our sleep lab to prepare for the boards. I was able to go through the fist volume in one day. I skipped the second volume as I believed as a Pulmonologist that I was comfortable with respiratory aspect of sleep medicine. I wanted to get comfortable with the EEG tracings for the board. The tech that handed me the Atlas then described it to me as "THE" atlas in sleep medicine. And it didn't take more than a couple of minutes at home to know why it was described as such. Although the first edition was light at words at was heavy on graphs. High quality printouts of sleep epochs that were as clear as the source they came from (The actual real size polysomnograms).
I wanted to buy the book then but seeing that the first edition came back in the 90s and it was heavy on paper based material rather than the predominant digital graphs of today I decided to wait. When I saw that the 2nd edition came out I ordered without hesitation and I am glad I did.
Although commented on by other reviewers as verbose compared to the first edition, the verbiage is greatly welcome. It is high quality scientific material that is highly relevant to the Atlas and strengthens the graphic material. I enjoyed reading it and was not in any rush to get to the graphics although they are where this Atlas shines. I learned a lot from the written subjects and l am glad I didn't skip them. Reprints from digital studies are included and although they don't have the quality of the paper based studies they are nonetheless of a very high quality and amazing clarity. This Atlas should be on the bookshelf of every sleep specialist and should be in each sleep lab. It is an amazing resource and a material that I intended to go over and over in the coming years.

Best training tool for sleep techs

I have used Nic's books to train new sleep techs for years and have found them to be very helpful. The biggest difference between these books and others are the high quality graphics. The books lay open easily and make viewing simple when recording patients as well as learning to score.

The second edition gives up to date information on newer titration therapies too. I would recommend these books to any manager as a must have.

Absolute highest quality

The second edition of the Atlas of Clinical Polysomnography, in the same manner as Mr. Butkov's initial release of the first edition, achieves an unsurpassed level of quality. I use the Atlas in teaching two college courses. My students are able to follow the logical sequence of topics easily, appreciating the clear real-size tracings (rarely found in other sleep publications) and the concise, thoughtful descriptions accompanying the tracings. This second edition contains quite a bit more text, more comprehensive diagrams, and commentaries on new developments in the field of sleep medicine, all of which make this edition truly priceless. Mr. Butkov has truly set the bar with this publication, and I know I speak for those in the sleep medical and technical communities - this Atlas is a MUST for those interested in polysomnography.

Disappointing

In the last 100 years far more people have been killed in mass atrocities than in actual warfare. Recurrent cruelty on a massive scale is an urgent problem which mankind has failed to solve. Taylor comes to this subject claiming that her expertise in neuroscience will give new understanding. But she writes in a self-indulgent style in which large quantities of speculation are mixed with the results of her reading. Repetitive and rambling text with asides of doubtful relevance and an occasional lacing of feminism make the book an irritating read. I am not fond of fiction as evidence in a scientific context. Shakespeare's Othello is stunning literature but not scientific evidence. Other quotations are used frustratingly, often leaving a question floating rather than adding to understanding. "A benchmark study of sexual behaviour" (p 204) from which she quotes precise-sounding percentages turns out to be the fraudulent work of Alfred Kinsey. Even a glance at Wikepedia would have raised suspicion. It is difficult to know how much Taylor accepts Freud's theories. Many intelligent people do, but mainstream scientists are deeply sceptical. The irritating use of endnotes is sadly not just a feature of this book. Disrupting one's reading to flip to the note may yield only a source reference, or stuff which should either be omitted or put in the main text, or a comment without which the main text cannot be understood. This is bad editing as well as lack of organization and discipline by the author.
Expect plenty of the sort of stuff you might get by discussing the subject with an intelligent friend, plus references to literature you may not know. In that sense you will have mulled over many angles of the subject. Do not expect your understanding to be enhanced greatly in a scientific sense, because the small amount of neuroscience does not increase understanding as much as you might think. Sadly, the impression is that this book is the product of the urge to follow up a previous best-seller rather than of mature scholarship and an incisive mind.

A margin-wrecker: the best kind of book is one that begs to be marked up

It's odd -- maybe not that odd -- that a book about cruel, base and disgusting acts would emerge as one of my favorites of all time.

The author, Kathleen Taylor (funny that two of my favorite authors are named Kathleen) is a neuroscientist at Oxford. She brings together the latest in the fledgling field of neuroscience with evolutionary theory, social and cultural anthropology and biologic processes to bring cruelty to life -- what it is and why we have it -- and helps readers arrive at a better understanding of what it means to be human. She has a vivid, technically precise and funny writing style that kept me hooked and kept me scribbling frantically in the margins as new ideas skittered away.

Cruelty, she argues, is linked to the uniquely human desire to predict and control the natural world. That can be as basic as avoiding dangerous predators or as refined as protecting belief systems important to our culture. And, she says, "...our hunger for control does not demand that our predictions are actively confirmed, just that they remain unchallenged."

Challenged, we are "...vulnerable to symbolic threats which cause us no physical harm." But because of the way our brains are wired, "...conflict feels stressful, like pain, and most people prefer to avoid it."

According to Taylor, we act against symbolic threats the same way our bodies act against dangerous diseases - "learn the warning signs, avoid the source, quarantine the infected and expel the contaminant." It's the same approach, and the same language (a blight upon our culture, threats to our way of living), that have been used to tragic result for those considered dangerous for centuries.
It's all tied to our biologic responses because, she argues, the symbolic brain is an extension of the physical brain. The same systems we use to deal with ingesting putrid food are high jacked by the brain when we encounter a putrid belief system that is, challenging to our symbolic health. It's the only system we have in place to deal with a threat that makes us feel sick.

"When it unwelcome ideas require extensive and effortful thought to accommodate them, it becomes easier not to bother changing the brain, but instead to shape the world to fit - by removing the irritant source of challenging signals."

That ties into one of my favorite lines, explaining why we (and I am certainly guilty of this) lash out at inanimate objects. "Broken gadgets can be expected not to work; unbroken gadgets should work; unbroken gadgets which should work and don't are infuriating misfits, to be treated accordingly."

Magnify that by the effort we expend mitigating against people who challenge our beliefs. "The more important the beliefs in question, the more strongly they will be defended, the more extreme emotion which a challenge will provoke and the more violent the response is likely to be."

We react to symbolic threats with mental acrobatics and, occasionally, the kind of violence usually reserved for physical threats, because that's all we know how to do. Just like "dogs that achieve nothing by barking at passing fire-engines, though the noise does recede, so perhaps they think they do," we protect our core beliefs at all costs, even though the strategies we employ may have no influence and in fact may run counter to those very beliefs.

She argues that, "Cruelty, thus, is as natural as laziness or competitiveness. It protects the precious self, physical or symbolic, by doing harm to those about whom we care less." Cruelty, then, is basically a too-aggressive response from our symbolic immune system.

It's a wild, funny, terrifying scientific ride through sadism and evil and pain and suffering and threat responses and neural pathways and a human history filled with tragic examples of cruelty. Rather than dark or depressing, I found it liberating and hopeful. The more we can understand the mechanisms of cruelty, the easier it will be to untangle them from misguided cultural beliefs and poorly understood biological functions. Cruelty may be part of the human condition, but refusing to act upon it may be one of our great accomplishments.

Pleasurable read-- very insightful!

I was a little ambivalent about this when I first picked it up, but I couldn't put it down. I found it to be extremely engaging and thought-provoking-- a lot of the historical examples are extremely prophetic of what is going on in the world today. I highly recommend this title for anyone who is interested in the psychology of violence, war, and inhumanity.

Chrissy Fanslau tells the story of a young girl named Adonia who falls head over heels for a hunk named Luke. It's not every day that the girl gets her own dream guy but Adonia does. That is until a secret becomes known and rocks Adonia's world. Luke is the first man she has ever truly loved and cares about could disappear within the blink of an eye. Will she allow this secret to get to her? What is this unknown secret? I will not spoil things for you, you'll have to find out yourself!

The story is very well written, the characters are lovable as well as unique, and you'll not want to put it down! Perfect for YA readers or anyone else wanting to read a fantastic high school love story. Check it out!

Such a well written, fun, simply great book-I know you will love it!!

Adonia was NOT looking forward to the next 3 weeks. Her best friend was going on vacation and leaving her alone, and she had no clue what she was going to do without her. That is, until she met the Greek God of her dreams. His name is Luke and he's not only gorgeous but smart, sweet, funny...literally every girl's dream. And for some strange reason he chose her!
Adonia was on cloud nnine and couldn't be happier, but she senses Luke is holding something back. She's worried, but it can't be that bad....can it?

Chrissy Fanslau has written a book that draws you in so completely you tune out everything around you while you are reading it (no seriously-it totally happened to me!) and it really doesn't matter how old you are...My Best Friend's Brother is a book everyone will love. The writing is amazing, the story entertaining and captivating, and the characters are fun, believable, and relatable.
Fanslau crafts her story and her world beautifully. She drops you in the middle of Alaska and shows you the beauty and harshness of it. She puts you in Adonia's mind and shoes as she goes about her life. You see everything through her eyes as it happens, and it makes you feel like part of the story. Her detail and description let you see everything clearly but they don't distract you from the story.
Her characters are just as thought out and developed as everything else in this book. Fanslau gives us people, not just characters. They are relatable and believable; they have thoughts and dreams and personalities. They think and act like anyone of that age would. And they're just plain awesome lol.
Whether you are in your teens or are sometimes struggling to remember your teens this book will amuse and entertain you. I honestly can't think of anything bad to say about My Best Friend's Brother, and I can't wait to read the next one!

Wonderful and witty!

Luke and Adonia fall in love, and all seems to be going more than well. Until Luke starts acting a little off and she wonders what's going on. He won't open up to her, but one night she finally finds out the truth behind his odd behavior. She has no idea what to do. She loves Luke and doesn't want to lose him. She has a decision to make, but it won't just effect her life, but those of two people she cares deeply about.

I really liked this book! Favreau is a very talented and gifted writer, and My Best Friend's Brother is on my list of favorites. The cast of characters is well thought out, with all them complementing the story very well. I highly recommend!!
