Interesting and disturbing

I'm not sure quite how to review this book- it got under my skin a bit and that's kind of hard to get over. I struggled to get through it wondering if it should be considered blasphemy or not.
The premise of the book is that Mack, the main character, struggles after his youngest daughter is kidnapped, abused, and assumed dead. She was taken to a shack found deep in the woods where they found her blood and dress but not her body. Mack deals with deep depression (understandably so) after the event. Then one day he is given a note from God to visit Him in the shack. As the book unfolds, Mack describes in detail his experience in the shack with God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. My issues with the book are all doctrinal - I know God has a body and He does not take on whatever form suits Him in the moment. The initial physical representation of God was extremely disturbing for me and irritated me to the point of putting the book down for a time. The words that came from God and Jesus were not in line with what the Scriptures teach us and that bugged me too. I felt like there were some good messages here and there as Mack struggled to forgive God and trust in Him again, but there were so many things that went against my beliefs that I found the good messages lost in the sea of borderline blasphemy. Yes I know this is a book of fiction, but I still think that the "teachings" of this book are inaccurate.

Especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, but doesn't replace actual disciplined study of the bible

This is an allegory about the nature of God and His relationship to Man, similar in kind to “The Pilgrim’s Progress” by John Bunyan. As with all allegories, it can enlighten truths in a short paragraph that may not be understood in a long chapter of theology. Unfortunately, allegories also have the weakness of being like a “graphic novel” compared to a true novel, simplifying or paraphrasing original material (in this case, the Bible) to the point of distortion.

Things I Liked:
- The depiction of the Trinity as a joyful internal relationship of love, which God desires to share with us.
- The deep love of God for Man (with love manifest differently through each of the Trinity), full of sacrifice and joy, without condemnation.
- A reasonably engaging plot to explore the topics.

Things I Didn’t Like:
- The “romping” good humor of the Trinity for each other and Man was over the top for me. There was no room for “Fear of the Lord” in this story, at all.
- No real iscussion of hell, except to say God wants us all to be with Him.
- Some minor eco-babble, man-bashing, use of the math concept of “fractals”, etc. were annoying.
- Some, mostly minor, points of theology were just wrong in my opinion.

I think this book would be especially meaningful to those that see God as stern or far-away, or for those that carry anger/resentments for wrongs done to them. So, this book can take its place with other recent Christian-pop books like “Wild at Heart” and “A Purpose-Driven Life” that have proven meaningful to some. Just don’t make the mistake that it replaces more disciplined study of the scriptures and serious books of theology that illuminate a greater portion of the Word. If asked to defend your faith, or wondering yourself wht the scriptures say about a topic, you can’t say, “I read something about that in ‘The Shack!’” On the other hand, allegories are the equivalent to parables, and we know Someone that was pretty effective in using those to teach deep concepts through illustrations.

Gut wrenching storyline

Spoiler alert: A lot of people really love this book. It was well written & the author went into great detail to explain his perception of God. If you believe in an invisible force that contains pure love, does not judge & only wants your love in return, then this book is for you. It seems I am not there yet. I could not get past the death of an innocent child at the hands of a serial killer even though the main character is released from the great sadness of losing his previous child by forgiving her killer. I was depressed for days after reading this story. I understand the concept that forgiveness can release victims from the negative emotional attachment to their agressors. Maybe if I also had the experience of actually meeting God in his three forms in person, I too would come to understand more fully the meaning of unconditional love. In the meantime, I will continue living my life by being as kind as I can be to all I meet. However, if I were to meet anyone abusing a child, I might just feel the need to kick them in their private area, then call the police.

Micro-goodness

“Maikro” presents us with ninety-nine haikus and thirty-four works of micro-fiction. As a poet myself, I know how difficult it is to create a successful and an emotionally accessible haiku, but Mr. Fowler proves he’s quite adept at his craft.

His poetic works begin and center on the concept of motion in nature: sunlight and shifting sand, wandering clouds, sudden bursts of bird wings, and Earth’s slow rotation into darkness and moonlit skies. Halfway through his collection, the overall dynamic transitions into the speculative realm. Mutants and steampunkesque humanoids pulsate with oil and radioactive blood. Two favorites of mine are “statue on duty / gleaming mechanical man / winks at passerby,” and “vampyres are breeding / sewers and subway tunnels / springtime underground.”

His fiction is quick and energetic. Works range from six-word and one to two-sentence stories into works peaking at about one hundred words. Once again, he offers us unexpected tales rooted in science fiction and fantasy. I loved “Mimecry,” a tiny, odd story about the narrator’s aversion to clowns and tender fascination with mimes. “That one at the park with the tear painted on his cheek?... He imagines the whole world contained within a single blue teardrop. And he sheds one all his own.”

This collection is great for lovers of genre poetry and fiction. I really enjoyed it.

EVOCATIVE AND HAUNTING

Like the Bonsai tree, haiku and micro fiction evoke primarily contemplation (for the viewer or reader) and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity (for the grower or writer).

The essence of haiku is "cutting" (kiru). Likewise with micro fiction and the Bonsai Tree. All three places limits on the author. Done poorly, the cutting produces ugliness. Done well, the cutting process produces beauty that makes the viewer look up to reflect on the impact and implications.

Milo James Fowler falls in the latter category. He makes you pause, reflect, or simply revel in the imagery.

ethereal souls
urban cacophony
dancing through moonlight

No words of mine can translate that for you. Each soul is different so you will be touched in a way diffent than me. But you will be touched.

so little of the day missed
until you appear

While the haiku don't always follow the traditional 5,7,5 syllable structure they are full of wonderful imagery, clever observations and wry humour. Comprehensive book by Gracie

I found this book to be a very good one on using Brazilian Jujitsu techniques in a no-gi environment. Compared to other BJJ works, this one is very well organized. As always, the photo quality is quite good. The author starts off by discussing the difference between gi and no-gi training, including tips on defending and passing the guard in no-gi grappling. He then talks about a training routine, including how to be a two-sided grappler and the importance of eliminating one's weaknesses. He goes on to discuss what he thinks it takes to be a champion, including knowing yourself and your opponent and having a good strategy. Then it's on to the actual techniques. Royler covers grips first, assuming that the reader will not be familiar with no-gi grappling. In this section, he covers many different grips that are possable, from locks around the body, to controlling the hands, to ways to hold the legs. The next section contains five drills, two solo and three with a partner, covering things like standing up to a base and setting up for takedowns. Next is 23 standing techniques, many of which are takedowns, and includes some takedown defense. Following that are 75 ground techniques, and include everything from the basic 'upa' escape to combinations of holds. Generally, the techniques seem grouped better in this work; for example, the mount escapes are all shown together, instead of haphazardly strewn throughout the text. The book itself seems oriented towards those who already are familiar with the basics of grappling, but who are trying to transfer from gi to no-gi sports. It could also help suplement a self-defense program, due to it's extensive ground escapes and holds. A pretty good book, but it doesn't explain the principles behind grappling holds, which I feel would have made it much better.

One of the Best in the Series!

Another in what has become a rapidly growing series (mostly co-written by Kid Pelligro) from Invisible Cities Press, backed by the same UAE Shiek who holds the ADCC Submission Grappling Championships (now every two years), ADCC legend Royler Gracie (son of Helio) returns to share techniques expressly designed for no-Gi/Kimono Submission Grappling.

This volume is giant step up from the previous two. Not only are the techniques rock solid, the organization is excellent (heck, there's organization!) and Royler goes through everything from getting grips (tricky without the cloth to hold on to), to takedowns, passing the guard, submissions from top and from the guard, sweeps, etc.

The text portion covers rules, strategies, and other important aspects of ADCC-style Submission Grappling, and the photos. like the rest of the series, are bright, full color, and with alternate angles when necessary.

It's unfortunate it took the series a few stumbles to get on track, but awesome that if finaly found such great form!

Outstanding

Royler, and crew have put together yet another excellent book on Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. This book is on par with JJ Machado's Black Belt techniques. Royler's book my well be the best of the series. No mean feat that. It deals more substantially with the stand up portion of a a grappling match than any of the other invisisble cities BJJ books and also discusses grips. This in itself is a huge plus. Most of the BJJ books on the market, even the much touted Brazilian Jiu-jitsu The Master Text, fails to deal adequately with stand-up material. Royler has put together some outstanding material. It has great techniques, great advice, and high production value. This is a book that will definately add to your submission grappling arsenal, while refining what you already know. Well worth the price.

A book for beginners and those well acquainted with Hatha Yoga in its many facets., not simply as an exercise.

I have been an off and on yoga student for many years, and am a spiritual seeker, as well. I practice meditation and have studied many of the religious areas that Strom writes about. So I am not new to any of this, but he presents it in a whole new charmingly lucid way. I reacquainted myself with much I had forgotten and many ideas took on new meaning for me. I even found many of my own thoughts brought into sharp focus in words I did not have for them. This is a wonderful book. I know I will re-read it again. I heartily endorse it for the beginner who is searching as well as those already experiencing the Search.

I haven't finished the book yet, but one of my first reactions were that there so many books that are better written than this. I like when things are explained in a simple way, which you will find in this book, but you will have a feeling that some things are so self explanatory and evident that it's anying to read at times. Even "the power of now" is written in a more engaging way, tho its hugely overrated.

If you liked the book, and think it's amazing, consider taking a look at Alexander Lowen's and Irvin yalom's books.

some reminders and some revelations

I began my meditation and yoga practice less than a year ago. I feel fortunate to have met teachers and found a studio that already teaches and practices in ways that are compatible with Strom's teachings. What I really appreciate about this book is how so much of it made me say to myself "I knew that ". But we forget and so it is good to have books like these to remind us and to also provide us some new revelations. We all know that as we practice, as we breathe, we are unpeeling an onion of knowledge and wisdom--and we are startled to see that it was in us all the time. Each moment and each breath bring us new learning and new joys. This book also has the clear ring of lived truth, which is perhaps why I read every word (I have stacks of books that are partially read). I will be in a workshop with Max Strom next month; I am now looking forward to it with great anticipation. He provides simple steps to start healing, you can set your own pace. The important thing is to begin.

Intrigued, Sam and his bride leave Kansas City in 1921 and encounter an icy reception in Dane, home of the influential Spence and Patman families. Sam teams up with an old cowboy and a taciturn Choctaw and, later, when they discover oil, timid Sam is transformed into a force bent on revenge against Pete Spence for past injustices. This is really two stories in onethat of Sam and of Able Patmantwo strong-willed men who carve their empires in the Texas prairie. This entertaining and well-written novel paints a vivid portrait of Texas life in the late 19th century and of the development of the East Texas oil fields. Pulsates with life ....

Sam Sheridan gets back from the trenches of WW1 and marries his hormone driven girlfriend, Georgia. An attorney's letter from Dane, Texas informs him that he has been bequeathed a 100 acre plot by an unknown benefactor. They travel to the town and meet with a wave of hostility. With a motley group of outcasts and, against all odds and expert opinion, they drill for oil. The book unfolds Sam's link to this mean little town and as they edge closer to striking the oil they uncover the sins and secrets of his legacy. Wealth beyond their dreams has its payback and into their lives steps a half-breed Cherokee who will ignite uncontrollable passions and cause upheavals that will go on to change their world and lives forever. ("The Wardens" by this same author is also highly recommended)

Engaging Read

A friend recommended this as "THE best book he has ever read!" I don't share that high opinion, but did find it an enjoyable read. Good characters, engaging story line with a couple of surprising twists along the way. Reminded me a little of the movie "Giant." Some people might be put off by the explicit sexual descriptions, but they were not numerous and had a purpose in the story.

Texas our Texas

This man has the old Texas down pat: ranching, oil, strata of society. This novel reminded me, a seventy- two-year-old Native Texan, how my state has grown and changed. The characters avoid being stereotypes, yet they are also types: the poor boy making good, an unfaithful and sexually wild wife, cattle barons, poor country people. The main revenge theme shows how revenge turns against the revengeful man
with a vengeance. Everything happens in this exciting novel. You won't want it to end.
