About the Author
Nancy Carpentier Brown is a Chestertonian writer with a goal to make G.K. Chesterton more accessible to young people and families. She's written the world's only full-length biography of G.K. Chesterton's beloved wife Frances. During her research on Frances Chesterton, Nancy discovered the Nicholl family. It is that family who figures prominently in this story.Brown is the wife of artist Michael Brown, and the mother of two young adults. Her other works include The Woman Who Was Chesterton; The Father Brown Reader; The Father Brown Reader II; A Study Guide to G.K. Chesterton's St. Francis; a Study Guide to G.K. Even he enjoyed the story

My kids and I read this book together. It is a very enjoyable story. I had my 15 year old son read it aloud to the rest of this since he does a British accent very well. Even he enjoyed the story. My other two children were twin 12-year-olds, boy and girl twins. I really admire G. K. Chesterton, and anything I can read by him or about him is a treasure. This story is based on a true story. It almost seems too good to be true, but the epilogue assures us that these young girls really did meet G. K. Chesterton and his wife one summer and invited them to tea. There is a mystery that is solved at the very end of the story. And there are plenty of situations that children can relate to that make this interesting and help them to see the importance of treating people right, even when they are not treating you right. This is a good story all around for children in third grade and up.

A Golden Tale for GKC fans ... and for those who will want to read more by GKC!

I loved this book. The story, based on a factual encounter a family had with GK Chesterton and his wife, is just delightful. Brown's story-telling style, shown in her rewrites of GKC's Father Brown stories The Father Brown Reader: Stories from Chesterton is even better in this story geared for the middle-readers.
A widowed mother and her three daughters befriend the childless GK and his wife Frances when the Chesterton's are visiting Lyme Regis. The oldest daughter, Clare (11) wants to write mysteries like the Fr. Brown series of GKC (who she idolizes) but doesn't know how to start while the 9 year-old sister wants to play piano and the youngest, CeCe (8) wants to buy the roller skates that the annoying neighbor boys have gotten. The Chestertons, who in real life loved children and, by all accounts, had a great rapport with youngsters, join in the family fun ... encouraging, comforting and generally being just the medicine this family needs.
A wonderful story ... filled with love and hope and family. Highly recommend this one.
Oh, and if you homeschool, this book will start you thinking about all the rabbit trails you could do with this book - geography of England (and where Lyme Regis is in relation to London and GKC's home, Beaconsfield); writing a mystery using GKC's advice to Clare; writing a play; building a puppet theater and making puppets ... the list goes on and on. How I wish Brown had written this 5 years ago when mine were still homeschooled!
