Grade 5-9-Rather than focusing solely on the subject's life on and off the court, Lipsyte examines M.J. the multimillion dollar commodity. He puts the Jordan phenomenon into historical perceptive, correlating the man's success with the rise in popularity of the N.B.A. and the changes in the style of the game over the years. In addition, he explores the relationship between athletics and the marketing of products. Jordan's latest career as a minor league baseball player is touched upon in the last few pages. While at times insightful, this book does have its drawbacks. For one thing, it is sure to disappoint the many readers who pick it up expecting more on Jordan's life and less philosophizing on the state of sports today. And even the philosophizing doesn't completely succeed; not all of the ideas are fully developed and the entire approach is somewhat disjointed. Lipsyte does avoid the over-awed, gee-whiz tone of many sports biographies, but he sometimes goes too far the other way and simply seems grumpy. The text is illustrated with black-and-white photographs of Jordan and other important figures in the history of basketball. Other biographies on this superstar are likely to have more appeal to young fans.

Robert Lipsyte's list of publications for young people isn't especially lengthy when compared to those of other authors who have been writing for the same length of time. Recognizing the importance of that book as well as his other works, the American Library Association honored Robert Lipsyte with the Margaret A. Edwards Award in 2001. Michael Jordan

I chose to read a biography on Michael Jordan, a player who changed the game of basketball during a time of racial tensions still running high. The book follows Michael on his journey through high school, and touches on his childhood and teenage experience. Then follows him to college where he came in as an outspoken freshman and made an unbelievable shot to win a championship title for the team, and begin to make a name for himself in the world of basketball. Then came his journey to the pros. He was drafted into the NBA before he even finished college, despite his mothers wishes, and began playing for the heat. He was a great player from the start but the team he was on was not right for him, and his team mates began getting jealous of the shadow he was casting over the rest of the team. Then the team got a new coach who built the team up around Jordan and chose players based on specific skill sets, making the team a dynasty. Finally Nike gave him offers and he came out with his own shoe line, one of the top shoe lines ever created by an athlete.
Some major messages in the book were related to how basketball changed the racial stereotypes and tensions in early America. Black basketball players were seen as not having intelligence and only relying on natural abilities and instincts. Jordan changed these stereotypes with his game and even white people began to love him for his game.
One of the things I liked about the book was that it was easy to read, and crammed a lot of information about Jordan and the history of the game into a small reading. One thing I disliked was that the author really looked at political issues with a liberal slander and I am personally more conservative. If someone is interested in basketball as a game and how it was developed from a backyard and ghetto playground hobby into a multibillion dollar industry and how Michael Jordan contributed to this expansion then I would recommend this book to that person. I would overall rate this book a 3 out of 5 because it could have been more detailed and there were certain parts of the book that didn't make sense just because of the way the author worded the sections.
I personally liked this book because it was very interesting and I thought the author did a great job of showing how basketball impacted the racial tensions and problems that were going on at the same time the game was evolving. I think these tensions were important to the development of the book because they fueled the controversy of professional basketball in all respects, not just Jordan's play. If the races had been on good terms then the development of controversy would be non-existent and the play of many professionals that that influenced Jordan probably would have changed. If this would have been the case who knows where the world of professional basketball would be today.

Great guide to traing your young dog.

I had not revisited training let alone advanced training in fifty years.
Retreiver training as much as everything else in the last half century, has made remarkable changes
In a most positive reward environment.
Well explained, well photographed, and easily followed.
Certainly I will recommend the book to friends training their Golden Retreivers and Labradores.

Not really for advanced retriever training

The topics covered in this book are at about the leve of an intermediate level retriever and not very advanced.
Chapter 1: Equipment Chapter2:Obedience/Force Fetch Chapter3:Lining Drills Chapter4: First Blind Retrieve
Chapter5: Marking, Honoring, and Waterfowl Skills, Chapter 6: Multiple Marks Chapter7: Upland Skills
Chapter 8: Safety Tips

The books is at a level I would expect for intermediate dogs such as senior hunter in AKC hunt tests, intermediate
in NAHRA, or seasoned in HRC tests.

For advanced retriever training, I recommend Evan Graham's Smartwork series or Mike Lardy's Total Retriever Training.
Do a youtube search for Evan Graham or Mark Lardy. They cover in detail many advanced concepts not covered in this book.

An Excellent Supplement To The Typical Guidebook To Italy

Published in 1986 by Oxford University Press, Professor Varriano's Italian Baroque and Rococo Architecture is a comprehensive introduction to Italian architecture generally described as either baroque or rococo by art historians. It is written in a clear prose that should appeal to the general reader wishing to grasp the fundamentals regarding these two styles of architecture in Italy. The author does make use of some architectural terminology but this use is largely confined to basic terms such as narthex, apse, and chancel, used in describing the floor plans of landmark churches and other terms such as pilaster, pediment, and entablature, used to describe some of the key components of a building's facade. A three-page glossary at the end of the book provides definitions for approximately fifty key architectural terms.

Varriano provides separate chapters on four of the most well-known architects: Francesco Borromini, Gianlorenzo Bernini, Pietro Cortona, and Guarino Guarini. These chapters include fairly detailed descriptions of each architect's major works plus floor plans and black and white photographs tie into the text to aid the reader. Except for Guarini, whose architectural legacy is based solidly in Turin, the primary focus of the other three chapters is on buildings located in Rome. These aesthetic judgements are generally offered with the reasoning behind them and for this reviewer add to the value of the text.

In addition to these better-known figures in Italian architecture, Varriano includes a large number of lessor-known architects, making this a comprehensive survey of many of the major landmarks in a large number of Italian cities. For example, in his two chapters on Northern Italy, the author presents such architects as the following: Francesco Maria Ricchini (Milan), Giovani Ambrogio Mazenta (Bologna), Bartolomeo Bianchi (Genoa), Matteo Nigetti and Gherardo Silvani (Florence), and Baldassare Longhena (Venice).

Varriano provides the same level of detail and comprehensiveness in his chapter on Southern Italy where he describes significant structures, both religious and secular, in the following locations: Naples, Syracuse, Catania, Caserta, and Lecce. For this reviewer, the several pages and numerous photos devoted to the rather unique architecture of Lecce in Apulia was one of the highlights of the entire book.

In closing, let me say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and feel that I've learned a great deal about these two styles of Italian architecture. This book makes an excellent supplement to a typical guidebook to Italy that usually does not provide much in the way of detailed description. It would also serve as a very good introduction to baroque and rococo Italian architecture for students of art history, architecture, or Italian culture.

My reason for awarding this book only four stars instead of an expected five stars is because it lacks a bibliography. Readers wishing to seek out additional resources in this area can, however, make use of the extensive footnotes positioned at the end of the book.

Excelent Introduction to contemporary debates on film theory

Unlike authors such as David Bordwell and Noël Carroll, who reject the importance of semiotics in filmic theories, Buckland creates a bridge between the tradition of European semiotics and the issues raised by cognitive film theory. As a result, Buckland's work allows us to approach the problems posed by the two traditions, as well as the theoretical tools that allows us to face those problems.

The book also serves as an excellent introduction to authors of French tradition such as Roger Odin, Christian Metz and Dominique Chateau, as well as cross-cutting themes of film semiotics: enunciation, film generative grammar, pragmatics, etc.. I particularly recommend chapter 2, where the author makes an excellent application of cognitive semantics to filmic perception, from an embodied perspective.

Terrific book

I have always been a fan of the Deitel series and have read quite a few books - C, C++ and Java How 2 Program as well as H.M. Deitel's book on OPerating Systems. I have little doubts in recommending this book to anyone starting C++.
So much to say about this book, however I'll limit myself to a few points which I found salient:
This book does not keep referring to C, so you won't get bugged down. (In case you want to learn C, try 'C How to Program' by the same authors.)
This book has been written keeping the beginner in mind (beginner = someone new to programming). So, it contains good, solid, perfect, working code you can try out.
Each page is littered with observations on Good Programming Practices and Software Engineering. That helps in refinement of code, so you need not buy another book to find out how to code 'effectively'.
The exercise questions are elaborate and will keep the reader busy for hours on end. But all that's time that's spent usefully.
And this book does not leave out those who already know C++. It's as good as any book for an intermediate level programmer.
An excellent book. Buy this one, it's certain that this will be the last C++ book you'll need.

Mediocre book with no improvements from 8th Edition - Will drain your enthusiasm

This book suffers from all the shortcomings of the 8th edition. I was first planning on doing a detailed review, but came to realize I would be repeating exactly what many readers pointed out in the previous editions. Besides, the authors don't care much to read them. The prudent reader would do well to read the reviews of the 8th edition to have an idea of what to expect at C++ How to Program (8th Edition).

For the sake of completeness, I will point of a few things.

You are looking at the most expensive book on C++ ever written, with nothing magical to show for that $110+ price [edit: with the fall semester underway, the price is now $135+]. We know books marketed as textbooks are targeted towards students who allegedly have deep pockets (from grants, parents' savings, or loans), hence the $100+ price tag. Simply put, it says a lot that the authors take part in this robbery. In comparison, a reference such as The C++ Programming Language by Stroustrup costs $54; C++ Primer Plus, by Prata and Stephen is a meager $38, while Effective C++ by Scott Meyers sits at $35. Their content far exceeds the quality and breadth of Deitel (though they are not formatted as textbooks). Furthermore, to make the biggest profits, the Deitel series churns out new editions at $100+ every other year, so that students can't purchase used copies for cheap from their graduating friends (exercises will mismatch). These morally despicable plays on the price of this book itself justify 2 stars off.

The chief issue with this book though is the incoherent wordiness used. At the time of this review, the publisher has chosen not to enable Amazon's "Click to Look Inside" (draw your own conclusions). So I can't point you to live examples (I will update this once they do). C++ is not an easy language to learn, so random wordiness is your enemy.

As an example, imagine being explained the difference between declaring a pointer ptr1 as { const int * ptr1 } vs. using { int * const ptr1 }. Both declarations are valid, and optional, but the difference is critical and a life-saver. But to explain this, the authors do not bother with short and sweet examples. Instead, they roll out paragraphs of frustrating text. If somehow you make it through those explanations, by the time you get to heavy concepts such as 'base class virtual constructors', the STL best practices, etc., this book will have you gouging your eyes out. Now some subjects deserve 1000 pages, but jumping around with lengthy explanations does disservice. Programming explained right is beautiful.

In addition, the layout of the book is atrocious: the authors use pages of code to demonstrate simple concepts, even in the first part of the book. Why not keep examples short and compile-worthy? That way the reader can type them, see what matters, change things around, and see what breaks. Instead of that, the lines of code never finish, and the reader has little incentive to type it all out (which is so important). Even worse, later chapters refer to lengthy examples listings in previous chapters (warning to Kindle readers).

Again, the reviews of the previous editions stand, so check them out. This book is dangerous for beginners because it risks discouraging them. The table of content, coloring, and the first chapter of the book are attractive. But things quickly unravel. I never heard of a professional using this book as a reference, and for the beginner, notice how even the 5-star reviews encourage this being a supplement instead. I would give it 3 stars if the price wasn't a bad joke.

If you are a true beginner and have to start at C++, pick up C++ Primer Plus (6th Edition) (Developer's Library). I question the wisdom of using C++ as you very first programming language (see the first comment to this review below), but hey, maybe you don't have a choice: C++ Primer Plus should serve you well then.

If you know a good bit how to program, but need to get up to speed on C++, I recommend Sams Teach Yourself C++ in One Hour a Day (7th Edition). I usually hate the "Teach yourself X in Y hours" trick, but this author nails it. You will be going dilly-dolly until you finish the book, without needing too much motivation. This book needs more coding exercices for beginners though, so I wouldn't recommend it as a first programming book.

If you need a complete reference, I recommend the powerhouse The C++ Programming Language, 4th Edition. The author wrote the C++ language, and knows what he is talking about.

There might be more out there, but these gets my vote.

Comprehensive guide . Not the cheapest book out there but well worth it

Unlike many C++ books, this seems to cover pretty much everything - from getting started through to the meat of C++ and also covering the Standard Template Library (STL). It is written in a somewhat didactic style with plenty of full examples, end of section summaries and tests (Q&A) to ensure the principles have hit home. Unlike many other C++ texts, it is clearly aimed at teaching from scratch, rather than 'starting from C'.

The format is great - color is used for section and for syntax highlighting which aids reading and comprehension.

There are a number of 'tips' scattered throughout the text highlighting frequent misunderstandings and programming pitfalls. The title is justified; the book teaches the fundamentals of C++ AND also how to program - hopefully how to write a good, well structured, easily maintainable C++ program.

The appendices are available in pdf only - a shame the entire book isn't also available that way also. I suspect the appendices were not included in the printed book to (understandably) save paper.

The one niggle with this is that it's a sizable tome already and in order to keep it below 'telephone book' size, it is printed on very thin paper (thinner than that in my bible). The thin paper causes the reverse side to be visible and also means that care is required not to tear the pages.

In all, this is an excellent book for both learning and reference. Highly recommended.

A bit disappointing -2 1/2 stars

A disappointing outcome for a highly anticipated new book in this beloved series. I'm pretty sure that I own every book that Hannah Howell has ever written, and have really enjoyed this series in particular. This 7th book starts off with a "meet cute" moment; Bened Vaughn, our Hero, meets our heroine Primrose in the woods. She has a gun in her hands and repeatedly tells him to stop moving. He assumes she is afraid of him, but she really just doesn't want him to step on her spectacles. The H is big, dark and handsome; the h is tiny, blonde, and wears glasses - adorable! As usual, this author writes enjoyable characters and an interesting story line, but there were too many inconsistencies for me. *SPOILERISH* Having the h wear spectacles would have been a cute touch, but after their initial mention, they seemed to disappear. Primrose never takes them off, not while sleeping, not while making love; they don't even fall off when she is abducted! A missed opportunity right there- the lenses could at least have gotten all steamed up when Bened kissed her! It was also established early in the book that the h's brother didn't know that their father was dead - however, when the siblings find each other...nothing. No mention of poor, dead papa; no grief stricken reveal, just...* crickets*. I then had a real "wait, what?" moment near the end of the book. Primrose is being held captive in a church, about to be forced to marry a repugnant old man of her evil aunt's choosing ( this aunt is so villainous throughout the book, it borders on cartoonish ). Our intrepid heroine is at the altar, when the chapel door was thrown open, and Bened strode down the aisle. We later see the scene from Bened's point of view - He quietly slipped inside the church and crept down the aisle. WELL? Did he stride or did he creep? Hannah Howell has been an auto-buy for me for many years, and she will remain so. I really just wanted Bened's story to be better than this. I received this ARC from Netgalley for an honest review.

Wonderful Series - Love It

First of all - I love this series and Ms. Howell’s family of Wherelocke’s and Vaughn’s are so totally unique, creative and totally imaginative it’s hard to have to wait for the next books detailing this amazing family.

Right from the start we are introduced to Lady Primrose Wooten who is in a desperate search for her brother now that her beloved father had died under mysterious circumstances. If she cannot locate her brother in time, her odious aunt and uncle are attempting to marry her off to a very sleazy man who is rumored to have killed his last three wives. Having been unseated in the woods, she is in dire straits without her spectacles and horse. Thankfully, Sir Bened Vaughn who has a knack for calming and a sixth sense of danger has come to her aid and offers his services to Primrose.

Bened has been on his own for some time, usually hired to protect and keep safe the heirs of nobility. Having saved the life of his last client’s heir, Bened has been rewarded with a title and lands by a grateful father. On his way to inspect his new lands he runs into Primrose. Something about Primrose stirs something primal in his blood, and after hearing her story, he feels honor-bound to assist her in her search.

Filled with intrigue, danger, and a simmering sensuality Bened and Primrose’s adventures are fraught with all kinds of hazards as her vengeful and psychotically evil aunt is determined to rid herself of one more impediment blocking her way to riches and power. Naturally, the call goes out to Bened’s many relatives and with their assistance and advice, Bened and Primrose manage to keep up with the evil machinations of her killer aunt.

Bottom line: Excellent read - fast action - simmering sensuality - plus fabulous characters - what more does one need!

Exciting Read

This was an exciting read that is part of a series, but can be read as a stand alone book. The characters and storyline kept my interest because a gifted MS Howell knows how to tend to her craft.
You know that this author tantalizes the reader with lots of adventure, mystery and sexual tension. It makes one want to keep reading until the very end. The hero in this next tale of Wherlocke family, is Sir Bened Vaughn. He's handsome, gifted, dangerous and so hot it will make you think of naughty things. Bened did not grow up titled, but he's earned his way with the sweat of his brow. He's not so high in the instep, but he layed back and in control. So when Bened meets the lovely Lady Primrose Wooten on the same road as he (she's fallen off her horse) and looking for her glasses and offers his help. Primrose comes up with a pistol aimed at Bened to leave her alone and go on down the lane (so to speak). But being a noble man, he just can't seem to do that. Bened gets the story out of the lady, and says he will be her protection, and find her brother that is missing.
You will want to find out how both of stubborn people try to keep from falling in love, but fate is fickle, and tries to throw lots of fences in their way. Especially the nasty relatives of Primrose who are bad to the bone.

This review is to let you know even if you are a student still in school or an adult needing to understand the process of using Google Drive, this is the book to use. The ease of each chapter is a basic step by step how to and guide to allow you to complete a hands on approach and to retain what you have just performed. I recommend this to anyone whom could be a little apprehensive in trying out something different from what they are accustomed to. The help you will obtain from using this textbook can be explained to your students or family member struggling to get with the program, if you know what I mean.
Money well spent. Congratulations George on a wonderful put together handbook on the basics and essentials for Google Drive.

Sometimes it is difficult to get clear and specific information in SAP and these short one subject books can be the best way to

It was clearly written and is very current for enhancement pack 6.0. Sometimes it is difficult to get clear and specific information in SAP and these short one subject books can be the best way to get detailed knowledge. I have found some better than others. I feel this is one of the better ones and well worth the money to either learn about or to refresh or become current on this subject.

Great tutorial on hard-to-find subjects

The format and contents of this book provide me the in-depth knowledge about how SAP handles to EBS and Lockbox operations.
The language is such business-oriented and the illustrations are self-explanatory to compliment beautifully the subjects in-discussed.
I'm impressed with the knowledge of the authors on these topics and would recommend it to others.
Pros: . Format is concise and focused
. The subjects in-discussed (EBS and Lockbox) is hard-to-find
. the explanation is directed to both SAP business users as well as technical professionals

The Scientific Investigation of Crime

His Last Bow

These are the next to last of the series of short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle about Sherlock Holmes. Some are set before the Great War, the last takes place in 1914. Holmes is retired and refused to take on any more cases, preferring to live out his years in a small rural village. [Where strangers stand out.]

* The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge. Mr. Scott Eccles visits Holmes about his "grotesque experience". The police question Eccles about a murder! Eccles tells Holmes about this experience. Holmes goes to investigate. There is a link to another mansion, then a break in the case. Inspector Baynes explains his method. The governess explains the hidden mystery. Later they learn of two deaths in Madrid. Justice was served.
* The Adventure of the Cardboard Box. Miss Cushing received a package in the mail: two human ears! Lestrade calls Holmes to investigate this crime. Holmes later sends a note to Lestrade and a man is arrested. There is a confession. Jealousy and anger caused three deaths.
* The Adventure of the Red Circle. Mrs. Warren visits Holmes to tell about a lodger who stays in his rooms in seclusion. Holmes deduces a reason for these actions. Holmes sees a signal, meets Gregson, and they enter a room to find a body. A woman explains the mystery behind the conspiracy.
* The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans. Holmes received a telegram from his brother Mycroft about a matter of state security. A clerk was found dead, he had technical papers on a secret weapon. Holmes investigates, then devises a plan to trap the guilty party. It works, and a letter is mailed to catch his accomplice and the rest of the secret papers.

* The Adventure of the Dying Detective. The now married Watson is called to attend to a very sick Holmes. Holmes has caught a strange disease known in Sumatra, and asks Watson to call upon a man who is an expert. This man visits Holmes. Alone, he boasts about what he did. Inspector Morton arrives to make the arrest. Another disguised murder solved.
* The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax. Holmes asks Watson to visit Lausanne and inquire about Lady Carfax; she has suddenly disappeared. A rough Englishman is also looking for her. They trace Carfax to a couple who returned to London. They are preparing for a funeral. Holmes inspects the coffin and finds a very old lady! The next morning Holmes returned to discover the truth and rescue Carfax.
* The Adventure of the Devil's Foot. Holmes had to take a vacation due to constant hard work so they went to Cornwall. He learns of a family tragedy where the sister died and her two brothers went mad overnight! The next day the remaining brother died of the same symptoms at his home! Holmes investigated this fresh scene. Later he talked to a relative of the family who told of the hidden facts behind the deaths. The mystery is solved informally.
* His Last Bow. Von Bork is a German secret agent who knows how to blend in with English society. Tonight his spy Altamont will bring the entire secret British signals code - for a price. Can anything go wrong? Holmes was asked by the Prime Minister to learn why things were going wrong and took this last job. Holmes foiled the work of this enemy agent and captured him as a prisoner. But the east wind will be cold and bitter soon. Holmes must hurry to cash a check. [Usually payments to spies are made in untraceable cash.]
