This Book is a MUST for All Newbies!!!
By Odysseus
Most (though not all) accounting textbooks tend to be dull, verbose, and poorly organized. This phenomenon often makes new students to accounting feel overwhelmed and confused. HAVE NO FEAR! If you are looking for a short, direct, super-clear, quick-and-dirty, no-nonsense 'handbook' to introductory accounting principles, GET THIS BOOK! Use it to supplement your Accounting 101 class. In fact, this little tome is SO good, I actually ended up using it instead of our regular class text (by McQuaig). A+++++++++

Highly recommended for Accounting 101
By DVDbean
I was taking an Accounting 101 course, and found many of the principles and equations being taught in the text to be confusing. If this sounds like you, then get this book. Everything is presented clearly and concisely, and it coincided with each chapter in my text book rather well.

I ended up with a B in the course, and I'm sure it would have been a C (or worse) without this book.

Four stars because there isn't an index, though.

A different perspective
By Ralph Strickland
I actually bought this book while at Auschwitz. It was recommended by our tour guide-one Stanislaw Macksaw-who was a Polish survivor of a German work camp and who lost relatives to both the Germans and the Russians. The book recounts the various perspectives of three SS camp workers; a repentant guard, an unrepentant doctor and the fairly straightforward account of the camp commandant while he was awaiting execution, who looks to neither repent or gloat but to leave a record of his actions for history to judge. Different motives drove each to write his particular section and each gives the reader some insight into the mind of the Allegemeine SS. The camp commandant's piece reads like a bureaucrat's account of his seemingly mundane job, leaving the reader with little insight into the evil which was served. The guard seeks to expiate some of his guilt for the crimes which he was a part of, while the doctor revels in the wickedness of which he was a part without acknowledging any guilt. A good book for those with an interest in the Holocaust or World War II history.

From someone who visited Auschwitz
By CdnGinger
I read this book while I was living in Poland, before visiting Auschwitz. I highly recommend it as it provides an interesting glimpse into the minds of the men who ran the camp. The most interesting account is that of Dr Kremer, one of the most instrumental figures in the exterminations. His account is in the form of a diary, where the news of extermination is side by side with more mundane things like the purchase of new buttons for a coat or the consumption of roast beef for dinner. A thoroughly interesting and excellent book.

Use negative space to positively improve your watercolors.
By Cailia
Negative space has long been one of my favorite art principles, but one that few artists truly seem to understand or take full advantage of. So when I saw the title of this book, I was more than a little intrigued. After pouring through this book, I was left with a lasting, positive impression.

Linda Kemp not only understands negative space, but she capitalizes upon it to create bold, stunning and truly unique watercolor paintings. She offers the reader a wide array of creative ideas that develop negative space into focal centerpieces, and clearly explains the various techniques used to pull them off, such as developing lively, bold underpaintings as the basis for later paintings and how to create textures that further emphasize negative space.

I am very impressed with this book. While the author's style of painting is quite different from my own, and may well differ greatly from your's, she offers many fun, exciting ideas to get the creative juices flowing, keep the process exciting and bring liveliness to into any style of painting.

If you want to explore exciting ways to treat negative space, and have an interest in watercolor or other water media, this is definitely the book for you.

Clearly explains a technique that difficult for the eye/mind to see.
By S. Jones
Negative painting is beautiful but difficult for the mind to grasp with a paint brush in ones hand. Linda explains the process by building on simple symbols to eventually paint a very complex image. Her work is beautiful, complex, and serene. She does an excellent job in the book and also in her workshop of teaching you how to paint with negative images.

This was a book which was both wonderfully inspiring in its 'message' and very clearly written. There are beautiful colour plates to describe the process, accompanied by very clear instructions.

Good book
By S. Frank
Good book. Clara is a single mother who owns her own bakery and works hard to give her son the best life she can. She's stunned to get a visit from a lawyer who informs her that her son's father, a man she hasn't seen in four years, has died. And instead of being the beach bum she thought he was, he was a member of a very wealthy family, and her son has inherited his father's millions. Now she and Hank have been invited to New York to meet his family.

Clara is very nervous and not sure what to expect. She never knew her parents, and was raised in the foster care system. The Dunbarton's lifestyle is completely outside her comfort zone. It doesn't help that her son's uncle, while being her ex's twin in looks is totally different in personality. Her first impression is that he is a cold, ruthless workaholic who has no idea how to relate to her and her son.

I liked Clara a lot. She's a bit of a workaholic herself, but she works very hard to give Hank all the love and attention she never received herself. She's not sure what to expect from Grant and his mother, and is very afraid that they might try to take Hank away from her. As she gets to know Grant, she sees that there is more to him than she expected.

Grant took over running the family business even though his brother had been the older of the two. When their father died when they were kids, Brent went from planning to run the business when they grew up to becoming more irresponsible and child-like. Grant felt a great responsibility to the family legacy and gave up his own dreams to run it. He never plans to have a wife and family of his own, feeling that he is married to the business instead.

I loved seeing their relationship develop. It didn't take long for Clara to see that, in spite of his claims, Grant really wasn't happy with his life. I liked all the little things that she said and did to try to bring some happiness back into his life. She fought against the attraction she felt to him, knowing that nothing could come of it. It was pretty sweet to see the influence that Clara and Hank had on Grant, as he slowly began to see that his life was pretty empty. It was fun to see him loosen up as he talked to Clara about the fish in his aquarium, and lay on his back looking at the stars painted on the dining room ceiling. I ached for them both when Clara and Hank went back to Georgia, believing that the other didn't care the same way.

The ending was really romantic. While I wasn't entirely surprised by what Grant did, there were parts of his actions that were unexpected. I was especially surprised by what his mother did. The epilogue was really great.

I really liked Grant's mother. I had been afraid that she was going to be the type to steal Hank away, or cold and snobby to Clara. She did seem to go a little overboard with some of the things she did, but I loved the way that she embraced both Hank and Clara. There were times when she seemed like a big kid herself.

But Grant Dunbarton is not like the fun-loving charmer who swept Clara off her feet
By jmwatson
The story is about Clara Easton's life when a windfall comes her way after the carefree man who fathered her son (who was really a Park Avenue gold) has dies leaving his fortune to her son Hank. Now she's spending the holidays in dazzling New York City with the man's family, including his sexy twin brother Grant who is a real workaholic. But Grant Dunbarton is not like the fun-loving charmer who swept Clara off her feet. As time goes by Grant finds himself drawn to Clara and understands that she is not what she appears to be (a gold-digger). It is amazing how Clara opens Grant's eyes to what life is all about. A heart warming story!

The Shadow Puppet (Inspector Maigret), by Georges Simenon

A new translation of this gripping domestic tragedy, set in Simenon's very own neighbourhood. Book twelve in the new Penguin Maigret series.

One by one the lighted windows went dark. The silhouette of the dead man could still be seen through the frosted glass like a Chinese shadow puppet. A taxi pulled up. It wasn't the public prosecutor yet. A young woman crossed the courtyard with hurried steps, leaving a whiff of perfume in her wake. Summoned to the dimly-lit Place des Vosges one night, where he sees shadowy figures at apartment windows, Maigret uncovers a tragic story of desperate lives, unhappy families, addiction and a terrible, fatal greed.

Penguin is publishing the entire series of Maigret novels in new translations. This novel has been published in previous translations as Maigret Mystified and The Shadow in the Courtyard.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Georges Simenon was born on 12 February 1903 in Lige, Belgium, and died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life. Between 1931 and 1972 he published seventy-five novels and twenty-eight short stories featuring Inspector Maigret.

Simenon always resisted identifying himself with his famous literary character, but acknowledged that they shared an important characteristic:

My motto, to the extent that I have one, has been noted often enough, and I’ve always conformed to it. It’s the one I’ve given to old Maigret, who resembles me in certain points…‘understand and judge not’.

Penguin is publishing the entire series of Maigret novels.

1. The Shadow Puppet

It was ten p.m. The iron gates of the public garden were locked and Place des Vosges was empty. Glistening tyre tracks on the asphalt, the continuous play of the fountains, leafless trees and the regular shapes of identical rooftops silhouetted against the sky.

There were few lights under the splendid arcades encircling the square. Only three or four shops. Inspector Maigret could see a family eating inside one of them, cluttered with beaded funeral wreaths.

He was trying to read the numbers above the doors, but he had barely passed the wreath shop when a diminutive form stepped out of the shadows.

‘Is it you I just telephoned?’

She must have been watching out for a long time. Despite the November cold, she had not slipped on a coat over her apron. Her nose was red, her eyes anxious.

Less than 400 metres away, on the corner of Rue de Barn, a uniformed police officer stood guard.

‘Didn’t you inform him?’ grumbled Maigret.

‘No! Because of Madame de Saint-Marc, who’s about to give birth…Oh look! There’s the doctor’s car, he was asked to come straight away.’

There were three cars drawn up alongside the pavement, headlamps on, red rear lights. The sky, with its drifting clouds against a moonlit backdrop, had an ambiguous paleness. It felt as if the first snows were in the air.

The concierge turned under the archway at the building’s entrance, from which hung a twenty-five-candlepower bulb covered in a film of dust.

‘Let me explain. This is the courtyard – you have to cross it to get to all parts of the building, except for the two shops. This is my lodge on the left. Take no notice, I didn’t have time to put the children to bed.’

There were two of them, a boy and a girl, in the untidy kitchen. But the concierge didn’t go inside. She pointed to a long building, at the far end of the vast and beautifully proportioned courtyard.

‘It’s there. You’ll see.’

Maigret was intrigued by this curious little woman, whose restless hands betrayed her febrility.

‘There’s someone on the phone asking for a detective chief inspector!’ he had been told earlier at Quai des Orfvres.

The voice on the other end was muffled. Several times he had repeated, ‘Please speak up, I can’t hear you.’

‘I can’t. I’m calling you from the tobacconist’s. So—’

And a garbled message followed.

‘You must come to 61, Place des Vosges right away…Yes…I think it’s a murder, but don’t tell anyone yet!’

And now the concierge was pointing at the tall first-floor windows. Behind the curtains, shadows could be seen coming and going.

‘It’s up there.’

‘The murder?’

‘No! Madame de Saint-Marc who’s giving birth…Her first…She’s not very strong. You understand?’

And the courtyard was even darker than Place des Vosges. It was illuminated by a single lamp on the wall. A staircase could just be made out on the other side of a glazed door, and there was the occasional lighted window.

‘What about the murder?’

‘I’m coming to that! Couchet’s workers left at six o’clock—’

‘Wait a moment. What is Couchet?’

‘The building at the far end. A laboratory where they make serums. You must have heard of Doctor Rivire’s Serums.’

‘And that lighted window?’

‘Wait. Today’s the 30th, so Monsieur Couchet was there. He’s in the habit of staying behind on his own after the offices have closed. I saw him through the window, sitting in his armchair. Look—’

A window with frosted-glass panes. A strange shadow, like that of a man slumped forward on his desk.

‘Is that him?’

‘Yes. Around eight o’clock, when I was emptying my rubbish bin, I glanced over in that direction. He was writing. You could clearly see the penholder or pencil in his hand.’

‘What time did the murder—’

‘Just a minute! I went upstairs to see how Madame de Saint-Marc was doing. I glanced over again when I came back down, and there he was, as he is now. Actually I thought he’d dozed off.’

Maigret was beginning to lose patience.

‘Then, fifteen minutes later—’

‘Yes! He was still in the same position! Get to the point.’

‘That’s all. I decided to check. I knocked on the office door. There was no answer so I went in. He’s dead. There’s blood everywhere.’

‘Why didn’t you go to the police? The police station is round the corner, in Rue de Barn.’

Maigret grows positively fond of the dead man
By Patto
This novel exemplifies everything I love about Maigret – the way the huge burly inspector lurks in the vicinity of the crime absorbing impressions; his habit of hanging around and chatting aimlessly with potential suspects, casually cranking them up; his unexpected bursts of fondness or compassion for various characters...

Maigret claims to have no method, yet his mere presence on the scene is a kind of method. It's great fun to watch him rattling a suspect with an expression of stupidity, an air of inattention, or a sudden roughness of manner. The unhurried pace of his investigation is always something to savor.

In this story, he grows unaccountably fond of the victim, Monsieur Coucher, wealthy owner of a health serum company shot dead in the presence of his empty safe. The good-natured Coucher lived life to the full. He had three women in his life – an elegant upper-class wife, a bitter ex-wife, and a charming young mistress. Maigret gets to know them quite well.

Simenon believed in writing novels that could be read in a day. The Shadow Puppet is certainly short and concise – not a word wasted – yet so dense with suggestive psychological undercurrents and unsettling atmosphere that it's totally satisfying and feels like it's taking place in real time.

I thought I'd read every Maigret novel available in English, but this one was new to me. I loved every minute of it. Although The Shadow a Puppet is an early Maigret, published in France in 1932, it already exhibits the understated wit, psychological nuances and haiku-like descriptions found in Simenon's best mysteries. The translation, I believe, successfully captures Simenon's inimitable style.

A young Simenon writes about a young Maigret.
By RDR
My favorite of the "early" Maigret's that I have read recently. This reader knows much more about the more mature Chief Inspector from having previously read so very many of Simenon's "later" Maigret's. A pleasure for the reader to imagine how much Simenon knew about the mature Maigret at the time he wrote The Shadow Puppet.

Not his best
By Guy P. Pfeffermann
A work of Simenon's youth. Interesting mainly as a sketch of the world he was to flesh out in later Maigrets.
