A Traveler In Time, by August Derleth

August W. Derleth was an amazingly prolific author of genres such as historical fiction, poetry, detective fiction, science fiction, horror, and biography. He may even be better known for having founded a printing house called Arkham Press to make the works of H.P. Lovecraft and other authors of supernatural fiction more easily accessible to readers in the United States, as such stories had previously been published only in England.

"A Traveler in Time" is a very clever little story, featuring newspaperman Tex Harrigan. Derleth writes charming short stories about Harrigan, who maintains a File of Queer People that he tends to reminisce about. He is usually to be found telling the story of one of his stranger interviews to a friend, oftentimes in a bar. In this story, Harrigan tells of the time he interviewed a man who claims to have built a time-traveling machine. The time traveler informs Harrigan that there is to be a war in the not-too-distant future that will destroy New York City, and his method of avoiding this war will be to go back to a time where he will be long dead before here's any chance of the war affecting him. This story is written for the humor, and it is very humorous indeed! It hardly takes a half hour to read and this edition is free, so I say, you should try it!

I feel lucky that some of Derleth's short Harrigan stories are being digitized, but I sure wish that some of his longer, more serious works would be converted. It's so ironic that he founded a printing house and yet he himself is out of print.

It only took me 20 minutes to read it, and it was surely worth it :) It was a tad bit confusing at one point, but at the end I tied it all together, and had a good laugh! Definetly would recommend it.

Issues and this amounts to spoilers. Why take modern alternating current appliances into colonial America, what use would they be? Just one of the details of the story that bothered me. I'll leave it at that.

Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act requires that all persons who maintain, service, repair or dispose of appliances that contain regulated refrigerants be certified in proper refrigerant handling techniques.

The EPA has also placed a sales restriction on refrigerants, limiting the sale of regulated refrigerants to certified technicians only.

Technicians who violate the Clean Air Act provisions by be fined, lose their certification, and may be required to appear in Federal court.

Pretty good, but

NOT everything you need to know. While I did pass the test for all three sections and core (i.e. Universal), I would say this book is really only 85% what you need. It is absolutely worth buying, but they need to focus more on the vacuum levels that need to be achieved. The actual dates were not tested such that you were quizzed what date any particular restriction went into effect. At least not on my test... Though the test did have some dates. I would have given this four (4) stars being it is worth 85%, but it claims to EVERYTHING (i.e. claims 100%) Hence, I reduced 1 star because this is incomplete, and the other star for misrepresentation.

Can't Put It Down! Thrilling Thriller!

Bourne's book is so exciting. I literally did run into people in the streets around Kendall Square and MIT on the way to work, because I couldn't stop reading it. If you are interested in any of the following, you'll love this book: great thrillers, homeland security, 9/11, entrepreneurs, terrific characters, counterterrorism, IPO's, internet billionaires or books you just can't put down. I wish she would write a sequel with any of the characters from this book in it, or just a book that focuses on any of the events that Edwin Hoff was ever part of -- part of making happen, or better, part of keeping from happening. He is a true hero who saved millions and never took a bow.

Riveting thriller that I could not put down...

I can't wait for the second secret Edwin Hoff! Bourne had me glued to this thriller that moved along a face pace, weaving characters in and out of the plot and taking me deeper and deeper into their web but especially allowing me to come to know the main character, Edwin Hoff, who I look forward to following in his future missions. To know that this character was inspired by a real person and real events gave the story that much more intrigue. I am hooked on Hoff.

The First Secret is a terrific book. Actually, Annie Bourne had me after the Prologue and the rest was a roller coaster of icing on the cake. I didn't put this down until I had finished; I simply ignored my family and other responsibilities for a long day so that I could get to the last page.
The really neat thing about this is that it's hard to describe to you who the protagonist is, there are so many intriguing characters and plot angles. Sure Edwin Hoff is the title character and he gets a lot of the air time, if you will. But there are at least three other very important lead-type characters. My personal favorite is Marly, who doesn't even matter in the first third of the novel.
Bourne does really well in mixing a variety of expertises. She has some first hand knowledge of the whole explosive dot.com world but has done her homework well for the rest of it. (To look at her on the book jacket, I can't imagine that she has actually done Navy Seal training, for example.) Edwin Hoff himself is a sort of Jason Bourne-like character, without that paranoia of most Ludlum novels. There is lots of action, high-tech gadgetry, chase scenes involving different elements of The Law. And there are twists that you don't see coming (but that then make sense after Bourne has brought them out.) You can actually ask yourself, "I wonder if this really happened?"
Do yourself a favor; get this book. And then block out a chunk of time because you'll need it. Other parts of your life can take a back seat for a little bit.

OMG I really loved this book, and the Characters, Max and Charlotte! Great together but takes them for ever!

Oh how I loved this book, I was given a free ARC for an honest review!

First time reading from the author Shanna Clayton, and I fell in love with the characters, I just wanted for Charlotte to have more control of her self, but I know how we women act, we over analyze things too much, and sometimes, it just directs us to something we don't want.

Charlotte is so hurt because of her boyfriend Miles, she wants to escape, not sure where to go, she leaves Gainesville towards Miami, to see if a stranger she only met once, would help her.

Then there's Max Archer, now about couple of years back, he was saved by Charlotte, he was stabbed and she scarred the robbers away with her gun. She went to the hospital, and once he recovered, she went on her way, during spring break. Basically Max owed her his life, he thought she was gorgeous, but for a messed up guy like him, its glad he didn't ask any information more from her.

Well this stranger Charlotte goes and visit is Max. She figure that maybe he can owe her a favor by staying a couple of weeks until she gets a job and enough money to find a place in Miami, but she was so distraught, and tired, Max listened to her and with conditions, he let her stay.

But those conditions were going to be very tough. Can they get a long, Max had his life stolen from him as a young man, in search of the person that took his family, and Charlotte is trying to gather herself, from a broken relationship, that she's known all her life, with her family and friends looking for her, they both need help. Can they help each other out?

Well, you have to read this book, it keeps you wanting to know what happened to Max, and will Max let Charlotte get close to him?

The characters are well liked, not predictive, kept me wanting to read and not put this book down, buy the book.

LOVED it!

I LOVED this. It was amazing. It was addicting. I couldn’t put it down.

Of course, parts of it really didn’t make sense…they kept feeling this undeniable attraction even though they didn’t know each other at all, and Max seemed to have no self-control at the most random times but acted like a total jerk at others. And Charlotte really wasn’t as I expected either—I didn’t expect her to wear her emotions on her sleeve, but that’s who she was, and I admired that because it took out the whole mind-game aspect that a lot of relationships (and potential ones) have. Honestly that probably saved a lot of time. The book would have been twice as long, I’m sure of it.

And luck came into play as well. It wasn’t entirely up to the characters. But they worked for what they got. I enjoyed the book’s ability to make me feel. I don’t know if it was because I could relate or not, but something was different with this book and it had me feeling things. For example, I was heartbroken and furious right along with Char when she was dealing with the whole ex-boyfriend thing. I could feel all the emotions the characters were feeling and it surprised me—even though it’s pretty normal for me to get involved in a book that way.

There was also some humor. Mostly Max was pretty tough and Char was pretty chill when it came to narration style, but sometimes—usually with Max—there would be some really hilarious moments. The book really was a great blend of good things.

Actually, thinking more about it, I admire Charlotte’s attitude more and more. She’s the kind of girl who needs to talk through things rather than hold grudges. She won’t be as relentlessly loyal as I would prefer, but she’ll be pretty darn loyal. She’ll get straight to the point about things. She’ll understand you. And she likes things to be clear and defined, rather than confusing and messy. And she won’t take no for an answer.

Even with bada** heroines, all those traits aren’t usually present—at least not all at once. Usually, those types of heroines have weaknesses along those more emotional lines—they give in to their emotions, lose control like Max does, give up trying to understand how they feel, and just go with it while the partner takes the reins. Char had the advantage of both being a bada** (she can shoot a gun with amazing accuracy, what more need be said) and very clear about what she needs emotionally. Maybe not what she wants all the time, but she—or at least her subconscious—knows what she needs.

Loved the book. I would welcome it on my shelves.

Really good!

Charlotte saved Max life and two years later when she needed time to change her life for good , she shows up at Max's house to collect that "debt" that will not only change her life but will also change Max's.

I super duper loved this book since page 1.
Max had a tragic past that stop him for loving someone else, or at least that is what he tells to himself. The only goal in his life was to find the responsible that destroyed his life. But that was until he met Charlotte for the second time. Breaking all of his own rules Max find himself given into Charlotte little by little.
The relationship builds little by little, is not the kind of insta-love or something like that. Max knows that has feeling for Charlotte but he will deny them at all costs or try to. His main rule was stay away from Charlotte avoid the whole friendship thing but every time he sees her all sad and depress from a broken heart he can not help it but talk to her about it.
This was a great book! I really loved it from the beginning. There was nothing wrong with it. For me it was perfect and I finished it very fast which is a good sign!
The characters were all great, I loved Trevor!
Max:I fell in love with Max , he was so hot!
Charlotte : she annoyed from time to time with her broken-heart , specially with the love potion , who does that ???
If I could I'd give this book 10 stars!
