A fun app, and now a fun comic suitable for kids and kids at heart

'Angry Birds Comics Volume 1: Welcome to the Flock' proved two things to me. First, you can make a decent comic out of characters from an app, and second, that Paul Tobin can write anything, and he does it well.

The birds are trying to protect their eggs. The pigs are trying to steal the eggs. The birds fly over to the pigs village to keep the pigs from having time to steal the eggs. That's pretty much the premise of the game. The pigs are pretty dumb, but some of the birds are too. When Bomb Bird gets the hiccups, he keeps blowing up anything around himself. Another story has the pigs trying to brainwash the birds with candy and propaganda to make them doubt each other. My favorite might have been the pigs building a theme park that had a lot in common with a certain California based theme park. There are other stories. There is even, I think, a flip comic that runs along the bottom pages of the book, but in a review electronic copy, it's a bit hard to flip the pages fast enough.

It's all perfectly great fun for kids, which is great, since I learned how to play the game from my, then, 4 year old niece. Rather than being one-note like the game, it felt more like the old Coyote/Roadrunner cartoons. I hope there are more. This was fun.

Pretty good considering

That’s right, the game 90% of people play while on the crapper has become a comic – and a surprisingly decent one too!

IDW have gone about the potentially godawful enterprise of adapting Angry Birds the game into a comic by hiring two excellent writers, Jeff Parker (Batman ’66) and Paul Tobin (Bandette), both of whom have created some wonderful all-ages comics (particularly Tobin’s Marvel Heroes work).

Together they craft some short and simple stories for the Angry Birds to have while the Pigs try to steal their eggs. An elaborate theme park, Piggyland, keeps the Birds occupied while the Pigs raid their nests; candy and cartoons attempt to subvert the Birds’ friendships; a weather machine takes on the Birds; and fashion grips the Pigs as the search for the best wig is on!

These are comics aimed at younger readers AND it’s based on a video game so expect the most straightforward, uncomplicated stories with the simplest characterisations. They’re very broad comics that I’m sure the target audience of kids will like – older readers though? Ehhhhhh, no!

That said, I read this out of curiosity to see how exactly Angry Birds becomes a comic at all, given that there’s absolutely no narrative in the game, and I think Parker and Tobin did a fine job building what they did out of what little they had. And it’s certainly more readable than Tobin’s other game-related comic, the coma-inducing Plants Vs Zombies: Lawnmageddon.

Is it an amazing comic? No, it’s Angry Birds, it was never going to be amazing! But it’s also not terrible either and fans of the game, especially younger readers, will find an ok collection of short comics in this volume.

My 7 year old is a HUGE Angry Birds fan and he absolutely LOVES this book! We've already ordered volume 2 and pre-ordered volume 3. He's had us read it to him, he's been reading it to himself and he's even sat down and drawn some of the illustrations from the comics. I highly recommend this for any kids in your family that are Angry Birds fans.

Like Sharing a Cup of Tea with Shunryu Suzuki

For anyone who wants to know what Shunryu Suzuki was really like, Tim Burkett's "Nothing Holy About It" is a great place to start. It is the best book since David Chadwick's "Crooked Cucumber" to paint such an intimate portrait of America's most influential Zen teacher. Tim Burkett was there with Suzuki Roshi for the Palo Alto talks that led to "Zen Mind, Beginners Mind". In fact, as a young Stanford student, Burkett helped organize the study group that made those seminal talks possible. He was also there when Suzuki founded Tassajara and at the legendary "Zenefit" where Suzuki got up on stage to thank Janis Joplin for her for amazing performance. Burkett and editor Wanda Isle bring all of these great moments in American Zen to life - and many, much more personal moments as well. It's a delight to watch as Tim's beloved Zen master helps him make sense of his college-age existentialist struggles over a cup of hot tea; and then join them at a roadside ice cream shop as Tim introduces a wide-eyed Suzuki Roshi to his very first chocolate sundae. The book would be well worth the price if all it did was bring the reader up close and personal with Suzuki Roshi. But it does so much more. "Nothing Holy" also provides a simple, yet profound, guide to Tim's own teachings. As the Guiding Teacher at Minnesota Zen Center, Tim applies the principles he learned from Suzuki and the other great teacher in his life, Dainin Katagari, as well as his own insights gained as a psychologist and social worker. His book captures those teachings in a practical, step by step approach to Zen that is kind, compassionate and grounded in the belief that true Zen is about gently and fully embracing the life you have right in front of you. The author maintains throughout that there is "nothing holy" about the Zen he learned from Suzuki Roshi. While it may not be holy, there is certainly something very valuable, satisfying, and enjoyable about it. The same can be said for Mr Burkett's wonderful guide to the Zen of being just who you are.

A beautiful book!

The subtitle of "Nothing Holy About It, "Being Just Who You Are" could be a useful description of Tim Burkett's own life. Coming of age at Stanford
University in the thick of the hippy era, the book tells how Tim left his family script, and took another path. Along the path he met the now famous Zen Roshi, Shunryu Suzuki, recently arrived from Japan.. The book tells stories of Tim's close encounters with Suzuki who became his teacher. Later , as a student of another Japanese Zen master, Katagiri Roshi Tim was ordained as one of the first American Zen priests .
This is a story filled with insights into the hearts and minds of two founding Japanese teachers of Zen in America who were Tim's teachers. It is also "Tim's Story" , the story of a young American man who had an inner call, who persisted on his own "road not often taken" , who became CEO of a large mental health charity that has met the needs of thousands, and who is currently the guiding teacher of the first Zen meditation center in Minneapolis.
Wanda Isle, Zen Priest and editor, writes with elegant simplicity. "Nothing Holy About It" is direct and honest. The stories, like parables, feel fresh and new. They touch something deeply reverential and human; perhaps for lack of better words, they touch the "sacred". I used the book as "bed time reflection"; the deep truths of the stories left me thoughtful, encouraged, peaceful. I was reminded of what I often forget but do well to remember and live by. The prose is exquisite, it sweeps the reader along: diamond clear, lyrical, inspired, it evokes inner stillness.
While about Zen Buddhist teachers and teachings I experienced the book as a universal story: the story of spiritual call, and of seekers who hear and follow that call and persist in walking the path. I loved the book, loved the stories, loved the lyricism of the prose.

Very Satisfying

First a disclosure: I’m a friend of the author’s. But I will give you an honest report, as is appropriate for a book about a way of sincerity. This is a book about Tim Burkett’s life on the path of Zen Buddhism as it illuminates the path for others to learn from. The book mixes copious and wonderful stories from his experiences with his famous teacher, Suzuki Roshi, from Tim’s own life as a Zen student and teacher, and from the Buddhist and allied traditions to create a well-woven narrative that is simultaneously teaching, autobiography, and remembrance of another.

I’m not a Zen adherent so there are aspects of the book that I didn’t resonate with. But nonetheless I felt myself elated to be reading it. Mainly it was because as I read the first few chapters I felt like I was reading a book unlike any I had read before. In fact, it wasn’t that the book was so unique—in it’s themes, say—but that reading it didn’t feel like reading a book at all. It felt like a direct encounter with a person. The book is the testament of someone who has digested a way of life so thoroughly that there feels like little Zen teaching in it that isn’t carried in Tim’s own voice and personality. You sense—though it’s embarrassing to even say it outright—an achievement of a life. And it was immensely refreshing and heartening to bear witness to it.

It’s also an achievement of an editor. The three themes are woven beautifully together so that the multiple purposes of the book are in harmony with each other pretty near completely.

These are the pleasures that readers will derive. In addition, it is a very penetrating presentation of the Zen way, particularly in a contemporary American context. I think both Zen students and those unfamiliar with Zen will learn a great deal from this book.

About the Author
Geoff Meggs is a Vancouver city councillor and a former communications director to Premier Glen Clark and Vancouver mayor Larry Campbell. As a journalist, he edited The Fisherman and wrote Salmon: The Decline of the West Coast Fishery (Douglas & McIntyre, 1991), which won the Lieutenant-Governor's Medal for Historical Writing and Cork Lines and Canning Lines: The Glory Years of Fishing on the West Coast, with Duncan Stacey (Douglas &
McIntyre, 1992).

Rod Mickleburgh is a senior writer for the Globe & Mail, based in Vancouver. During his long career he has worked for the Penticton Herald, Prince George Citizen, Vernon News, Vancouver Sun, Vancouver Province and CBC TV. In 1994, he was a co-winner of the Michener and in 1993 was nominated for a National Newspaper Award. His previous book, Rare Courage (McClelland and Stewart, 2005), profiled Canadian veterans of World War II.

I had looked for this book for a long time as Canadian politics intrigued me. Found it, downloaded it and now use it for research for future elections in B.C. Mr Barrett was an excellent politician for his time and made BC a better place.

Simple brilliance punctuated with suspect concepts

This was my text for Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary's Survey of Christian Doctrine (THEO 510). The book coincides with video lectures Dr. Towns recorded. Dr. Towns hails from a mild dispensational stance that believes in pretrib/premil eschatology, all to which I agree. He is conservative in theology, and, I believe, sound in major concepts. He holds a high view of Scripture, which shines through in its use in this text.

This is the second class I have taken under Dr. Towns, and both times he wrote the textbook. The other was an Evangelism and Church Growth class, and I am happy to say that this text (Theology for Today) is MUCH, MUCH better than the other text. Theology for Today has only minor grammatical, spelling and formatting issues. But, for the price (between $70 and $100 depending on where you buy...I paid $77 + s/h), you would expect a perfectly polished text. This text is actually bound professionally, unlike some of his other texts which were put together with plastic binding found at Kinko's (literally). The outline format is haphazard at times.

I said in the title that this text was simple brilliance punctuated with suspect concepts. Let me start with the positive first. Dr. Towns explains complex issues with clarity and provides very useful lists of evidence supporting theologies, such as the prophecies foretelling of Christ. There are great exegetical concepts cataloged in Towns' text that are usually left out of other theology texts. He frequently references Strong, Hodge and Scofield (at least much more than other authors.) On the other hand, Dr. Towns states several times in his course that definitive answers can be found for some highly debatable concepts. It is under these debatable concepts that he tends to lose me. He makes some sweeping generalizations in his chapters on demonology, satanology and angelology that have tenuous Scriptural support. Long-story-short, he goes confidently out on a limb and doesn't give enough Scriptural support in these chapters. Likewise, while not a Calvinist or an Arminian, he uses mostly Calvinistic writers' critiques of Arminianism. This leads to a narrow straw man view of Arminianism. He makes some claims of science in his very very short intro to the creation/evolution debate and he does so without references. To me, this is poor form, as critiques of science without references to some reliable source are of limited value. He has plenty of sources listed on other topics, and I wondered why he didn't reference his short foray into science. (In his book, his science is decent, but in the video he confused the big bang theory with the theory of the Cambrian explosion, so I would like to see his sources on other things regarding science.)

This text includes a glossary, an index of persons and an index of Scripture.

If you can get this text used at half the price of a new book (preferably somewhere in the $30 to $40 range), it is worth adding to your library. While I will rely on my copy of Erickson's "Christian Theology" and other theologies before this text, Theology for Today will remain on my shelf, and I will look to it for reference when situations dictate.

I am not going to go into any detail with the book as that has been done extensively. However, it must be known that Theology for Today is an introductory theology book. Meaning, it will convey and advocate some concepts that are not totally clear, while condemning others without giving a fuller explanation. Again, it is not an advanced systematic theology (by the way, neither is Grudem's). This book was designed for undergraduates to spoon-feed their beliefs without necessarily having to weigh ALL of the evidence. That will come later in other, deeper theology classes. So before condemning this book, consider the context in which it was written. For students who know practically nothing about theology. Change your major to theology and you will go deeper to what you are looking for. Then go to seminary and go even deeper than that and deal with the really hard issues. Towns, Grudem, and Erricson (Christian Theology) all have the same goal, just do it different ways. Town's may be the lesser of the three, but it does not deserve the trash can by any means.It is not a four or five volume book on theology.
