Reads like a Bad Romance Novel

I was so disappointed with this book. My husband is an avid fan of Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series so I decided to read this novel (because I love historical fiction) to see if I liked his writing style. This book was obviously written by a man and it reads more like a bad romance or porn novel, than historical fiction. I had to quit after about 1/3 of the book because I couldn't stand the lack of storyline development and the constant sex. The pages were either filled with extremely boring political accounts(reads like a history book) or extremely immoral behavior. There is sex on almost every page-- it's not romantic or realistic. Nothing leads up to the intimacy described and it is not moving in any way-- the character just has women throwing themselves at him (hence why I said it must be written by a man-- who is living in a fantasy world!!) The characters are shallow and unlikeable and the rest of the story is boring. I threw this book away and don't recommend it to anyone. My husband swears that the Wheel of Time series is written completely different, but now that I've read this (...) I'm not certain I even want to begin the Wheel of Time series.

A great read, and very informative about the American Rev.

Michael Fallon, in the Fallon Blood, is one of the most interesting and believable characters I have found. This book covers his trials and his successes over an extended period of time that covers the American Revolution. I found the book to be very exciting and dramatic, while at the same time historically accurate and educational. I would reccomend this book to anyone. A very enjoyable read. What is Robert Jordan's real name??

A great historical adventure

The Fallon Blood is an excellent work of historical fiction, and it ought to be read by all who have a love for adventure and who have even just a mild curiousity about the American Revolution. Jordan commands both a top notch understanding the war and late 18th century American lifestyle.
Jordan writes about the period via a story about fictional characters who occasionally run into famous historical figures. Generals Lafayette and Nathaniel Greene, for example, make appearances in the novel. Younger writers, such as Jason Manning, have written with this approach, but Jordan is masterful with this book.
Despite his excellence, Jordan is not without his weaknesses. Even with all of the historical expertise he displays in the pages of the Fallon Blood, Jordan will always be a "Conan the Barbarian" writer at heart. The hero, Fallon, is handsome and macho. Sex is offered to him frequently and easily. He possesses tremendous skill and physical strength as a soldier. The women are beautiful and extremely sexually active. The villains are evil and twisted. Hence, the story is a bit unrealistic at times, but what a fun way to learn a greal deal of historically accurate information about early America!
Readers from South Carolina will loves this book more than any other fans of Jordan's work. Jordan possesses an undeniable arrogance and pride about the role of South Carolina in the American Revolution, and the Fallon Blood is his vehicle for sharing those feelings and beliefs with the rest of the world. Regardless of whether or not you will agree with Jordan's historical evaluation of his home state, this book is a sexy and exiting look at the birth of our nation. Give it a read!

GETTING HEALTY WITH FOOD

Dr. Shelton, in his day was a genius. His food combining suggestions hold as true today as when written. I have studied Dr. Sheltons works and most of todays current knowledge is based upon his research.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to loose weight. Combining foods correctly, the system eventually adjusts, cleans itself out, the body becomes nourished... you eat less... Wallah! you loose weight.

No magic here. No harsh diets that usually don't work with weight coming back with a vengeance once you quit. Food Combining is plain, simple common sense ... if, you think about it.

Do give this method a try. Besides weight loss, I believe you will start to feel better: no longer sluggish, tired, snacking all the time to feed a body starved from nutrients blocked within the digestive tract from incorrect food combining.

At least give this a try. In the end, you have nothing to loose. But it is not a magic bullet. You will not be skinny in 60 days. It took time and effort to get that blog around the tummy and buttocks ... it takes time to naturally get it off. And like it or not, exercise will help in the process. Keeping muscles in prime condition is important. It is muscle action that moves everything around in there and out of there. If your muscles are stagnant so are you.

His concepts are good but also there is contradiction

I strongly agree with the concept but the book is visually difficult to read. Not enough white space or paragraph separation. His concepts are good but also there is contradiction. The topic is complex and unless you know the basics, this presentation is a bit hard to follow. That said, I've been mindful of food combining for years and it makes a huge difference in the way your gut feels after eating and in keeping your weight down.

It makes me personally feel better. I eat the things I like

The ideas are sound and food combining makes sense. It makes me personally feel better. I eat the things I like. I simply eat them according to the combining principles. I used to not eat fruit because it made me itchy and painful. Now I can have all I want I just dont eat anything else for 2-3 hours after, that's if I have it for breakfast. If I have it for lunch I wait until the proteins in my stomach are gone about 3-5 hours depending on how much I ate and then have a late fruit lunch. I don't eat fruit for dinner. I don't combine starches with protein and no longer get heartburn. I would recommend the book, just modify what you like to fit the principle most of the time. I cheated the other day and had potato chips with a fish dinner, but I ate the chips last and not too many of them so as, hopefully not to inhibit the production of pepsin which is necessary to break down protein. I did get a hint of heartburn, but only for a few minutes. Well that's it.

A tremendous book

I enjoyed this book much more in my second reading, nearly twenty years after the initial publication. Full of the Holy Spirit and of wisdom, Witness Lee was the best Bible expositor I have ever read. In this book he identifies how God has sovereignly directed human affairs during the last 2,000 years, in order that He can accomplish His eternal purpose on this earth.

Discusses how God is sovereign in the world situation

In this book, Witness Lee talks about human history from the time of Adam and how various governments and world situations have been sovereignly arranged to carry out God's purpose on the earth. Everything from the Roman Empire to the establishment of the United States as a dominant force in the world were necessary for God to accomplish his ultimate purpose. For example, the Roman Empire, with its laws and organization and vast territory under its control, made it possible for the early apostles to travel easily from place to place preaching the Gospel.

Even though this book was written in 1982, and new world situations have arisen, I think you'll find that Witness Lee's analysis is still very relevant and insightful. For example, he has a section on the "triangle" of Russia, China, and the U.S., the only countries to have what is needed to be powerful today - a large territory, a big population, natural resources, and skills. He aptly describes China's future many years before it plays out by noting that their resources are rich, but underdeveloped, and proposes that for this reason China will need the United States for the money and technology to develop their iron, copper, silver, and coal mines. Actually, this is exactly what happened, so that now China is one of America's biggest competitors in marketing world goods. I highly recommend this book, and as another reviewer put it, once you start it you may find yourself reading it in one sitting.

Michael F. Bird (Ph.D., University of Queensland) is lecturer in theology at Crossway College and honorary research associate at the University of Queensland in Australia. He is the author of Jesus and the Origins of the Gentile Mission and The Saving Righteousness of God: Studies on Paul, Justification, and the New Perspective. He is also co-moderator of the New Testament blog "Euangelion."

Succinct Survey of the Sources

It is known that early Christianity (1) was a sect of Judaism; and (2) had a strong emphasis on evangelism from the beginning. This raises a question: Did Christianity inherit its evangelistic emphasis from Judaism, or was this emphasis a trait that distinguished Christianity from the rest of Judaism?

Bird's book gives a succinct survey of the relevant ancient sources and also summarizes today's scholarly discussion on this question. Largely in agreement with Scot McKnight and Martin Goodman, Bird concludes that first-century Judaism (1)defended itself in the ancient marketplace of ideas; (2) was open to Gentile converts; but (3) didn't have an organized "missionary" outreach to the pagan world.

At the end of the book, Bird hints that Christianity's distinctive emphasis on evangelism can be attributed to the teachings of Jesus and its conviction, based on those teachings, that the time had come for the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecies about the nations joining Israel in the eschatological kingdom of God.

The book includes a convenient "sourcebook" of relevant quotes from primary sources like Josephus, Philo, the Talmud, Greco-Roman writers, and the New Testament.

5 Making History Real, Touchable and Seriously Swoony Stars

As I sit here thinking about what I have just read...I applaud April White for her amazing ability to take history... make it accessible, full of intrigue and guile.... and use an edgy yet coming of age gal as our leader through it all. She has taken all the current times flavor; mixed it with deeply thought-provoking questions of the ages and blended her own brand of magic to capture our attention from the first page to the end.

Her first book, Marking Time, set a stage of using time travel... a group of people who had specific powers which their descendants continued through generations. She called them the Immortal Descendants. Now I am not the talented Ms. White, so I will direct you to please read the blurb

However, what I can and will tell you is how fantastic this second book in the series was.

It is one thing to start a series and lay out the feel, characters, complete a full arc of a story and then leave the readers wanting for more...with seeds planted as to how another additional part could go. Sometimes the first books are good... but you get the feeling the writer has all these boxes they have to tick...so the current story gets lost... there is too heavy a hand pointing to the proposed secondary character to have their own book... it can be like the author has a neon sign pointing- saying "over here" flashing every time they have this character do anything. But Ms. White wasn't that type of author in the first book and so when this second part of the series happened... I was dancing for joy to see it released.

What was so amazing about the style and way of writing was as I read the first couple of pages... every memory, every emotion I felt while reading the first.... came flooding back to me. The affection I held for Saria and her gutsy somewhat unpolished way of approaching things came back to me. My remembrance of the sweet new young love she had for Archer tingled in my mind and all of the complexity of the whole Traits and Powers hit full on as I dug into the book. It is very special when a reader can just fall right back into the correct mind to accept all the fantasy and time travel as if it was an everyday experience. I was able to be in the moment with Saria; I was off and running.

This second book looks at the time of Elizabeth Tudor... with all of the politics, family upheaval and imprisonment and marries it against the politics, family upheaval and possible imprisonment of the Immortals. It was so smart.... the intrigue... the discoveries...and the times and how they lived.... all of it sucked you in and you wanted to know more.

The main characters also focused on real life challenges; acceptance of love, willingness to truly be honest with others and forgiveness. Also the main continuing question was... are we masters of our own fate... do we have choices in our lives and what is moral...How do we live a good just life- accepting all for who they are as people and not segregate our love... be open to just love unconditionally.

All of the main characters in these books are strong... it doesn't matter what century or class or sex... the gals are steel... the men are clear and good-hearted. I loved it all.

So if you want to get lost in a book which mixes real life events with a story of creativity and guile... Then please...carve out sometime for something which will capture your mind as well as your heart. The great news is you can read each one and not have that cliffy hangover. Each book ends with a true understanding and conclusion. Ms. White... I am ready to go where you take me next....

There's poop, but it's not poop :)

The only story with poop, that isn't poop.

The Tudors, as a history subject, have never failed to completely fascinate me. There are so many things left unknown- outside of educated guesstimations- that never fail to tickle my interest. And obviously Ms. White feels the same.

In a story where there are so many twists, turns, rewinds, and backflips, there are so many places, innumerable details that could have been dropped, left out, left behind, or completely ignored. I just finished a reading marathon on this book, twice over, and have not found one grammatical error, misspelt word, or forgotten detail.

It's flawless.
It's amazing.

And I desperately want someone to build a time machine so I may meet Queen Elizabeth, also. This book has made me profoundly jealous of Ms. White's imagination, and the character, Saira's life.

The only moment in this story I stopped and got incredibly grossed out (not including the swim Saira took in the 16th century Cesspool, or the foretold medieval swirly poor Ringo experiences) was after Saira swims in the foulest river of all time, and **!!BEFORE!!** scrubbing down with icy London well water, eats a meat pie. I literally had to set my laptop away from me as I gagged thinking about the raw sewage Saira is covered in, while **EATING** with her bare hands, **BEFORE** she washes. There was plenty of attention to the medical perspective of time travel throughout this story, and poultices, shots, and proper wound dressing was appropriately described wherever necessary. But Saira, dear Saira, WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU EAT!!!

Other than that one moment of germophobia from me, as a reader, I absolutely loved this book and will definitely recommend it to everyone.

They just keep getting better!

I received Tempting Fate in return for an honest review from the author. Saira is once again being hunted by Mongers who are after all the mixed bloods. With the help of Archer and her friends Saira is able to figure out what Bishop Wilder is doing. When Saira wakes from a dream that Archer is seeing they know that Ringo will be at the hands of the bishop at some point in the future even if it was in the past. When they team up with a few of her friends to steal the genealogy from the mongers they realize only a thief will be able to. So Saira jumps back in time to get Ringo knowing he would be up to helping them with the book.

After saving the book they turn their attention to the vision that they had of Bishop Wilder with Ringo back during 1554. With the help of Ringo the trio head back in time to when Elizabeth Tudor was being held by her sister. The plan is to stop Bishop Wilder before he can break the time and keep Ringo away from him but when they arrive things are more dire than they expected. Elizabeth has accepted the fact that she is going to die being that she’s a seer who’s seen her own death. Saira will have to save Elizabeth from the chopping block and stop Bishop Wilder before it’s too late and things can’t be fixed.

Saira is one of my favorite characters she may have a few flaws but no one is perfect. I love that even when in the 1500’s she’s still wears her combat boots and jeans under her dresses so if she needed to run she would be ready. I also love that she’s very much in love with Archer he’s just the perfect guy who happens to fit the prophecy . I really liked that we had a chance to see more of Ringo he was one of my favorite from the prior book. I also liked seeing more of the other Immortal Descendants.

Tempting Fate is the second book in The Immortal Descendants and continues off not long after the end of the first. Tempting Fate had big shoes to fill after how much I loved the first book and it doesn't disappoint it might even be better. The concept of time travel but with an exciting new twist that incorporates real events from the past. A fast paced action packed novel loaded with mystery, suspense and even romance. Tempting fate captured my heart and imagination right from the start it was impossible to put down till the very end. I loved how the author used Elizabeth’s story putting her own unique spin and creating a new obsession in the Tudor Era. The author has created a beautifully written story that flows from start to finish it’s easy to lose all track of time. I like that the novel is also clean aside from a little blood so teens as well as adults will enjoy it. I think I found my favorite book of 2014. I can’t wait for the next novel and to see what we have in store for us next. I loved Tempting Fate so much!!!
