About the Author

Christian Fuchs is Professor at the University of Westminster, where he is the Director of the Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies and the Director of the Communication and Media Research Institute. Best all-around introduction to social media as a field of ...

Best all-around introduction to social media as a field of research and a social realm, excellent introduction to critical theory as well. However (and perhaps not the best thing to say about a book that takes a critical theory stand) I found it a bit too...critical- by which I mean lacking some nuances. Sure, surveillance, ownership and control of social media are essential questions and should not be ignored, but Fuchs pretty much throws to the ground any other existing approach to the study of social media (Castells, Jenkins etc). While it is the point of critical theory to fight ideologies and idealistic theories of society, in dismissing other approaches this book just becomes over-zealous in trying to install another ideology.
Definitely a must-read for anyone interested in social media, from any perspective (practitioners, academics, students, companies)- but read it in the same critical spirit in which Fuchs treats his subject.

A different point-of-view

Although I, personally, disagree with much of Prof. Fuchs' postulations, this text is a necessary balance to the current social media obsession. My students were surprised at the level of corporate infiltration in, what they perceive as, a totally populist forum. Fuchs' perspective provides a much-needed NEGATIVE perspective to the uses of social media. While there have been many journal articles written by psychologists on the negative impact of social media's "isolation" and compulsive use, this is the only source I have seen that looks at the negative STRUCTURE of social media. TED talks abound re the capitalistic uses of social media and its economic potential -- and I'm all for that. However, we must also take a look at the "man behind the curtain" to have a well-rounded sense of social media's structure.

A very useful Marxist perspective on social media, highly critical of both Henry Jenkins and Manuel Castells, that reminds us that we must never forget ownership, power relations and possible exploitation of users whose digital footsteps are sold to the advertisers. I use this as one of several books on my undergraduate course in Media and Communication Studies entitled "Information and Communication Theory".

About the Author
Doreen Virtue worked as an eating disorders therapist at inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facilities in California and Tennessee. She holds degrees in counseling psychology, and her doctoral dissertation was on the link between childhood abuse and the development of eating disorders. She turned her dissertation into her first Hay House book, Losing Your Pounds of Pain. Doreen is also the author of The Yo-Yo Diet Syndrome, The Art of Raw Living Food (with Jenny Ross), and Eating in the Light.�

A book that delivers on its promise.

Do you crave certain foods? Or maybe you find yourself eating everything in sight when things are going bad for you? Or do you fall off your diet because you are so hungry? Doreen Virtue, Ph.D., offers solutions to these and other food-related problems in Constant Craving: What Your Food Cravings Mean And How To Overcome Them. Based on her research, which included scientific studies, ancient Chinese medicine, and interviews with her clients, Dr. Virtue says that food cravings are related to our emotions. She defines a food craving as an "obsessive desire for a specific type of food." This is different than a preference, and it often leads people to eat in very unhealthy ways. "Food cravings often stem from basic unmet needs for fun, excitement, or love," according to Dr. Virtue. She explains how each food craving can be traced to a specific emotional need, often allowing people to heal themselves. For example, people who crave nuts haven't met their needs for fun and pleasure in their lives. She devotes a chapter to each kind of craving, explaining how the constituents of each kind of food work in the body to create an illusion of feeling better. For example, nuts contain pyrazine, "which triggers the pleasure center of the brain." She then offers suggestions as to how the emotional needs can be satisfied in ways other than eating, and finishes each chapter with affirmations. Specific cravings discussed include: chocolate, dairy products, salty snack foods, spicy foods, liquids, breads, rice, pasta, nuts and nut butters, cookies, cakes, pies, candy, and high-fat foods. Dr. Virtue emphasizes that meeting the underlying needs as the best way to overcome food cravings. She says that the appetite must be healed, not killed. Several easy quizzes provide guidance as to what kind of eater you are, such as "binge eater" or "stress eater." She also explains how to keep from overeating at holidays and restaurants. She promises that the information in Constant Cravings "will allow you to conduct your own food-craving interpretations. I'll teach you the meaning behind each type of food, so you can analyze--and reduce--your own appetite." Readers will find that she keeps that promise.

What I especially liked about this book, is that it is not just another diet book. She states simply, eat less and excercise more and you will lose weight. What she does talk about is what type of eater are you and then analyzes what that means and then follows that up with a 5 Steps to Reduce Fattening Feelings, which I think is good, and which I am going to start using today!

An inspiration-packed, practical guide to selling articles

I found the title lackluster and vague, but the contents themselves are first-rate. The book is jammed with brainstorming ideas and practical tips for selling articles of national interest---no matter where you live. Yudkin certainly brings her own expertise to the topic, but she also includes a generous sampling of quotes and helpful advice from other real-life freelancers and writing professionals. There are fewer than half-a-dozen writing books I return to year after year for inspiration and refreshment; this one will certainly join that select number.

Daddy's trying to buy a zoo) but overly wordy book, Mee writes about caring for his dying wife and their two young children, dealing with Code Red emergencies (when a dangerous animal escapes its confines), hiring staff, learning about his new two- and four-footed charges and setting his sights on refurbishing his zoo into a sanctuary for breeding and raising endangered animals. Mee tends to meander with too-long explanations for one-sentence points, and the awe he feels about each individual animal is repetitive. Coupled with Britishisms that are never explained and a curious lack of varied wild animal stories, this book that was obviously meant to make animal lovers roar with pleasure will only make them whine with frustration. When writer Mee’s father died, his mother needed to sell the house and move to a smaller place—so the entire family decided to buy a zoo. Mee’s sister had seen an advertisement for the sale of the Dartmoor Wildlife Park, a small zoo in Devonshire in the southwest of England. After a long series of negotiations,�licensing snafus,�and the inevitable family conflicts, the author, his mother, and his brother moved into the park’s rundown house and started running a zoo. Though they owned the grounds and its 200 animals outright, they still had to pay�20 staff members, feed the animals, and upgrade the grounds. During the first week, a jaguar escaped, and the author and his brother began to realize what they’d gotten themselves into. Through eradicating the plague of rats, clearing out years of rubbish to reveal usable buildings, and battling with banks for operating expenses, the author and his staff gradually pulled the zoo back from the brink of closure.�The emotional appeal of the zoo’s rescue is wonderfully limned in Mee’s practical, good-humored prose. --Nancy Bent

Lions and tigers and bears oh my!

Benjamin Mee has finally settled his family in a French barn/house and has settled in to write a book when his father dies and his siblings begin to consider purchasing a zoo. His 76 year old mother supports this idea, but negotiations fall apart and each sibling returns to their lives. Mee and his wife Katherine and son Milo and daughter Ella are busy with daily life when a health problem strikes Katherine and the Mee family is just trying to survive. In the midst of this the zoo becomes available again and after protracted negotiations and countless compromises the family, minus one brother purchase the zoo which they rename Dartmoor Wildlife Park.

Life at the zoo is a continuing series of struggles as the family tries to return the park to a financial success. The children and the staff come to respect and love the animals. Of course there are unexpected crisis...escaping cats, sick animals, sick family and the countless health inspections. We Bought a Zoo is a delightful glimpse into what it takes to run a small private zoo and a glimpse of what might be referred to as the eccentricity of the British. I appreciated the honest account of one family's plunge into chasing a dream. While the story sometimes holds the reader at arm's length, it is a heartwarming read.

Remarkable Story

In "We Bought A Zoo", Benjamin Mee tells the story of how his family came to buy the Dartmoor Zoological Park and the great lengths it took to revitalize the zoo and prepare it for opening day. I think this book is particularly appealing because it is so hard to imagine most people purchasing a zoo or even entertaining the idea of doing so. Hence, the mystery of it all! I was intrigued by the book's topic and I just had to find out what Mee's thought process was and the reasoning behind his family's extraordinary acquisition.

From the start, Mee provides an in-depth analysis into the zoo-keeping business and leaves no details unexplored. Some of the information about animal grooming and sterilization seemed a bit excessive to have included and tended to distract from the story. However I do understand that Mee wanted to provide readers all of the facts, even if they seemed trivial, in order to paint the complete picture of what he had to cope with on a daily basis. The most interesting parts about the animals were their interactions with each other and their keepers. I also really liked the scenes that depicted the animal runaways which really gave a glimpse into how stressful and sometimes exciting managing a zoo can be. There are even some beautiful color photos of Mee's family and ones of the noteworthy animals mentioned in the book!

While most of the book is dedicated to details of the zoo and Mee's formal responsibilities to the zoo, the parts that talk about his wife Katherine and her illness are really touching. I enjoyed reading about their special relationship and how much Mee too care of her. It was nice to see the Mee's caretaking side because it came in contrast to his required business-like manner while running the zoo.

With all the anticipation that had been building up while reading the book, the ending was incredibly satisfying. It is one of those books where the ending can be nothing but expected, and nonetheless I felt an immense sense of relief when reading about the zoo's successful opening. I also felt proud of the Mee family for how much they had all accomplished and how they grew closer as a family, despite the hardships encountered along the way.

Money Makes the Zoo Go 'Round....

We Bought A Zoo is subtitled: The Amazing True Story of a Young Family, a Broken Down Zoo, and the 200 Wild Animals That Changed Their Lives Forever

Given that, the story takes a little time to get off the ground. We find the author, a free-lance writer, living in rural southern France with his wife & two children and refinishing two dirt-floor stone barns. When word comes through his sister that a dilapidated zoo in the English countryside is for sale, the author & his extended family takes action to purchase it. This is not an easy endeavor and the business details fill the first quarter of the book. Note also that a BBC film crew got wind of the endeavour and asked to film the process.

The thing is, I don't think I'd like Benjamin Mee if I met him in person. He uprooted his family once, by selling their beloved flat in London to move to his personal idyll in France, and then again, back to England because, after all, HE'D always wanted to own a zoo and now his French dream wasn't what he wanted after all. On both occasions, he overrode his wife Katherine. This was especially appalling to me the second time because Katherine was newly diagnosed with a brain tumour & receiving (excellent) treatment in France. The fact that his (possibly) dying wife wasn't enthused about this new venture didn't faze him a bit.

In addition, although Mee has experienced staff and certified professionals advising him, he ignores their advice in serious decisions at least twice that he reports. In both cases, things ended up favorably but, rather than be grateful for twists of fate that may have affected the situations, he boasts and struts.

But the story? Animal lovers, once you get past the purchase transaction, there's plenty of goodies for you amidst the details of the continuing financial issues, grim living conditions (for the family), and Katherine's disease and eventual death.

Imagine the day staff moved Tammy the tiger without proper restraint precaution, only to have the beast gain consciousness as they moved her. Mee describes the situation as being "beyond fear, to total calm". But the fear lingered when, sometime later, Mee & his brother are startled by a large animal moving behind them while checking some reservoir pipes, & spring to defend their lives - against the neighbor's cow. I believe they were less afraid when one of their younger wolves was running loose through the nearest town. And there is an amusing expos�: what happens "When Porcupines Go Bad".

Perhaps the most likable animal in the zoo was Zak, the elderly alpha wolf, who "maintained his grip on the pack now, not with brute force, but through sheer charisma and experience." The account of his surgery to save him from testicular cancer will be a source of angst among male readers and of glee to the women.

Mee's account of the peacock - which he evidently disdains - as a dumb, evolutionary mistake, is humorous. It also amuses me that Mee can describe the wonders of these animals and their behaviours and personalities and make attribution every time to the marvel of evolution, to the point, by his own admission, that it "[made] evolution sound (almost) like a religion".

That these creatures are so intelligently made, with abilities beyond what are needed for survival, and so varied is surely evidence of a designer, a creator. And since, according to Mee, the peacock (named, so he postulates, for the size of its brain), has that marvelous tail that is so "evolutionarily expensive", it really should be extinct by that theory. The last time I checked on the world's peacock population, that wasn't the case.

I would have loved to see more photographs of the animals Mee brings to life in his stories, but the colour pictures included are disappointing. Nearly half are of their project in France, and the ones of the animals include many that are not named in the book, and exclude many that are.

I really did learn a tremendous amount, though, about the running of a zoo. It's a highly regulated & examined business - and an almost unmaginably expensive one to run. The money and the struggle to get it, manage it & plan for making it, are a major part of the book. And, animal lovers with the same dream, please note that, despite the months of Herculean effort by Mee, his family & his staff, the zoo would not have succeeded financially if the BBC (whose film crew had been on location for those many months) had not run the four-part television series Titles "Ben's Zoo" in November of their opening year. That brought more paying visitors and made endless opportunities for additional moneymaking venues such as this book. Without that, the zoo would have closed, broke, after the first summer and the animals would have been disperse. In other words, "Kids, don't try this at home!"

Should you read it? Even though I personally dislike the author, he does write well and the book held my attention from beginning to end. There are no bogged down bits - it's all moving forward. If you like animals or are interested in learning about the world of zoos, then by all means - read it & enjoy!

About the Author
CARL BACON joined StatPro Group plc as Chairman in April 2000. StatPro develops and markets specialist middle-office reporting software to the asset management industry. Carl also runs his own consultancy business providing advice to asset managers on various risk and performance measurement issues.
Prior to joining StatPro Carl was Director of Risk Control and Performance at Foreign & Colonial Management Ltd, Vice President Head of Performance (Europe) for J P Morgan Investment Management Inc., and Head of Performance for Royal Insurance Asset Management.
Carl holds a BSc Hons in Mathematics from Manchester University and is a member of the UK Investment Performance Committee (UKIPC), the European Investment Performance Committee (EIPC) and the Investment Performance Council (IPC). An original GIPS committee member, Carl also chairs the IPC Interpretations Sub-Committee, is ex-chair of the IPC Verification Sub-Committee and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Journal of Performance Measurement.

Very well explained overview of portfolio perfromance measures and attribution

This book starts out with a very complete overview of portfolio return calculation methodologies: simple return, money-weighted , time-weighted and hybrid methodologies. Where needed each formula is illustrated with a calculation example. A table with advantages and disavantages of each method represents an overview for easy reference. Of particular interest is the calculation of components returns using the simple and/or modified Dietz which can be disaggregated into component returns.

The following chapter is about benchmarking: compare portfolio return and risk against an appropriate benchmark. Both arithmetic and geometric excess return are explained. The author clearly explains why the latter is preferred i.e.: proportionality, convertibility, compoundability. In a next chapter the various types of risks are defined i.e. compliance, operational risk, counterpart or credit risk and portfolio risk . Both the Sharpe ratio and the so-called risk-adjusted return M-square (for Leag Modigliani and her grandfather Professor Franco Modigliani) are beautifully explained by means of a risk-return graphs. Regression analysis is described in full details of progressive complexity : alpha, beta (systematic risk or volatility), CAPM, Jensen's alpha, Bull/bear beta and beta timing ratio, Treynor ratio (reward to volatility), M-square for beta, appraisal ratio (systematic risk adjusted Sharpe). The Fama decomposition of excess return in selectivity and systematic risk is again nicely illustrated using a risk -return graph. Relative risk measures described are tracking error and information ratio. The section on return distributions is also very complete: normal distribution, Sortino, upside potential ratioValue at Risk (Var), etc. The chapter on risk contains a seperate section on fixed income risk (i.e. duration, convexity, duration beta).

Performance attribution is likely the most interesting chapther: explore how good asset manager add value through asset allocation, security selection and interaction. The Brinson, Hood and Beebower attribution model and the more advanced Brinson and Fachler attribution models are explained in detail using calculation examples and graphs. Other topics covered are sector weights, multi-period attribution and smoothing alogrithms for adding up in case of multiple period arithmetic attribution factors, risk-adjusted attribution, multi-currencty attribution and fixed income attribution (e.g. weighted duration attribution). The chapter concludes with an overview of all attribution standards thereby providing an easy reference overview.

The books finishes with a chapter on performance presentation standards. Overall this books is a very complete overview of portfolio performance measures and attributions. The author manages to explain complex issues in an enjoyable and comprehensable manner via a progressive buildup of complexity. I highly recommend this book to everyone interest in portfolio performance measurement and attribution.

Solid inroduction

This is a good place to start. Complex concepts explained in a comprehensible manner. For people already familiar with the basics will be looking for more, expecially on topics such as fixed income and multi-current portfolios.

This book is absolutely amazing for Performance Measurement interviews, honestly! It covers every aspect of fund returns, index returns and atributions in a clear concise way with examples. It is extremely easy to follow and understand. Also, it covers every possible technical Performance interview question that you could every be asked, all in the right detail, which is key.

I have read about four or five other Performance Measurement books, which had long-winded chapters with highly-technical drawn-out examples. This book manages to sum up everything you need to know in a nutshell and is wery intelligently and concisely worded and taught. I am sure if you read and learnt the material in this book, you would excel both at any performance interview and/or job.
