About the Author

I.S.P. �Nation is Professor in Applied Linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. In addition to books, his extensive list of publications on teaching and learning vocabulary, language teaching methodology, and curriculum design, includes journal articles, book chapters and book reviews. He has taught in Indonesia, Thailand, the United States, Finland and Japan.

John Macalister is Senior Lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He�specialises in the fields of language teaching methodology and curriculum design and�draws on experience�in teacher education and curriculum design in Thailand, Cambodia, Kiribati, Vanuatu and Namibia.

Helpful but wordy

I have several of ISP Nation's English language teaching texts including this one. Nation (often with co-authors, in this case with John Macalister) is a well respected and practical expert in the ESL/EFL/TESOL field. His ideas are always sound and backed up with loads of knowledge about the research findings of many others. He is focussed on principles of language teaching and very critical of the many texts not based on research and current knowledge. For example most texts deal with opposites and morphologically and phonologically similar words together, but Nation points out research that indicates that this can be a source of interference in learning and remembering new vocabulary.

This text is extremely practical and covers all the essential considerations that need forethought and attention when designing a language curriculum. Nation does not recommend a single approach that could be "grafted on" to any existing language teaching and learning situation. The chapters are well-sequenced and contain much helpful advice and many suggestions and ideas for class use. He is blunt about some of the failings of many published course books intended for the language learner.

One quibble I have is with the text itself. In some places it reads as if it were dictated as the sentences ramble on where a couple of short sentences would be clearer. I am an experienced language teacher but found myself having to read some paragraphs aloud to myself in order to be clear about what is the important part of the message. Some careful editing would make the book easier to read and the content easier to grasp. (But it is better than another of Nation's texts: Learning Vocabulary in Another Language which really needs severe editing.)

Another minor quibble is that, as with many references for English language teachers, the examples look mostly at the needs of English learners living in English speaking countries. For those of us working in NES countries it is easy to feel a little overlooked.

But, in general, this text is as helpful as anything I have found for the English language teacher.

Curriculum design made approachable

Language Curriculum Design is a concise, easy-to-follow guide to curriculum design using the latest research. Teachers will find this useful for both ESL and EFL/TESOL contexts among others, and suitable for many different types of teaching. The chapters are short, yet full of useful information for both theory and practice. And bonus, it arrived very promptly!

A Clear Voice in the Debate

It is important to remember that there are no hard-and-fast rules when it comes to teaching, and certainly not language teaching. Whichever of the main varietals you work with TEFL/TESL/TESOL/LOTE etc. you are always going to find things that don't work, that do work - and then don't work. Teaching any language is a fluid practice that has as much to do with the learners' attitudes/desires/culture/characters/predispositions/fears as it does with the nuts-and-bolts of grammar and syntax.

That established, however, there are certain 'ground rules' - certain mainstays that can give the novice a strong foundation upon which to build - and this texts presents those in a clear, concise, precise and ultimately very readable format. The book is well designed and the kind of reference resource that allows the reader to interact with it, put it down and then come back. The tone of the text is respectful, professional and not at all condescending - so it should suit both those experienced in the field and those new to it too. The chapter lengths are perfect, not too long and cover most bases.

If there is a criticism, then I would say that there needs to be more attention paid to progressive paradigms. Whilst there is a chapter on 'negotiated syllabi' (not syllabuses!!!) As an experienced professional, myself, I personally would have liked a couple more chapters on alternative/democratic/critical/emancipatory approaches to curriculum design - maybe that would be an idea for a follow-up text. The aforementioned said, clearly the book is a practical 'hands-on' life-raft for those charged with language curriculum design and perhaps my area of interest would cause confusion for newcomers.

To summate, an excellent book on a potentially dry topic, clear and concise, lots of food for though and yet lots of confirmations too. A valuable reference for any education professional charged with curriculum development - regardless of your discipline.

Worth Your Time and Effort

This book was extremely informative and I loved every minute I spent reading it. This was the type of all-around-book that I was searching for on the Silky breed and I was worried it would not cover as much as I'd hoped it would. It goes into extreme details at times and offers a lot of beautiful pictures and illustrations on the Silkys. This book covered everything from the history to the senior years, with annotations along the pages. If you're interested in the Silky breed, I promise you will not find another book as informative.

This book really helped me in understanding everything i needed to know about the silky terrier breed. I also found the grooming section to be very helpful. If you have a silky i would recommend this book.

Highly Recommended Silky Terrier Guide

I found this book to be very informative and interesting, without being too drawn out and bogged down in excessive detail. It gets to the point, and lets you know what you really need to know about the Australian Silky Terrier breed.
It is an easy and enjoyable read, with lots of practical guides and information that you will actually find useful.
It may seem strange to have ordered a book on Australian Silky Terriers, from America to be sent to my home in Australia..but it was worth the round trip :)

This is my first review of the comic series of Harlequin romances although I have read many. I wanted to say that this is by far the best I have read with both a hero and a heroine that I completely sympathize with. I enjoyed the journey that they took to find happiness together and the way they overcame roadblocks in their way. Beautiful story.

The second work in a planned three-volume series (after 2004's Coming of the Third Reich) this book starts with the Nazis' complete assumption of power and creation of a one-party state in 1933, and goes to September 1939 and the beginning of World War II. In sharp detail, Evans shows how Hitler seized upon his political victory and immediately began his plan for the Nazi infiltration of every aspect of German society. The Nazi propaganda blitz covered everything from local councils to social clubs to all voluntary associations. And when propaganda didn't work, coercion and fear did. At the behest of Hitler, the brownshirts and SS (secret police) ruthlessly harassed, beat, and murdered the Jews and Communists first, but later targeted anyone who showed even the slightest criticism of Nazi activities. Those Germans who disapproved of the Nazis were mainly confined to acts of passive resistance to Hitler's totalitarian rule. Nationalism proved to be the one issue capable of galvanizing the nation, as the Nazis' growing power helped to erase the shame and humiliation of the Treaty of Versailles that closed World War I.

Over the course of the book, Evans shows how everything Hitler did in this period was designed to prepare the nation for a war--"a life and death struggle"--whose aim was less geographical conquest than racial purity. Hitler's main objective was "to remould the minds, spirits and bodies of the German people to make them capable and worthy of the role of the new master-race that awaited them." Though Hitler did not work alone, Evans makes it clear that he was the overwhelming driving force behind it all, including policies regarding education, eugenics, and foreign affairs. Starred Review. The second volume of Cambridge historian Evans's trilogy on the Third Reich (after The Coming of the Third Reich) is a major achievement. No other recent synthetic history has quite the range and narrative power of Evans's work. There are no surprises here. Instead, the reader will find careful, detailed analyses of all the major issues relating to the Third Reich between Hitler's assumption of power on January 31, 1933, and the start of WWII on September 1, 1939: the construction of the dictatorship, the propaganda, the economy, the racial policy and the planning for war. Evans shows just how difficult it was for Hitler to secure his power in Germany (it required unabashed terror to defeat the Nazis' many opponents), but also how successful was the establishment of the Volksgemeinschaft, the racial community. Once Hitler had successfully consolidated his power, every other aspect of Nazi policy, from education to the economy, became subordinated to the preparation for war. The war, Evans emphasizes, was never simply an effort to redraw the map of Europe. The vast, overarching aim of establishing a racial utopia, a newly modern, German-dominated Europe cleansed of Jews and other undesirables, could only be accomplished through war. In the second part of a three-volume history of the Third Reich, Evans examines Hitler's regime in the six years running up to the Second World War, exploring everything from art to the economy and shifting diplomatic alliances. He offers exhaustive statistical analysis coupled with the compelling personal narratives of dignitaries, dissidents, and such ordinary Germans as a Hamburg schoolteacher. A portrait emerges of a state that penetrated and transformed every aspect of life, and yet remained incoherent and often inept. Evans shows that Nazism was all the more effective for its irrationality and arbitrariness: there was no logic in which to take refuge. Language was perverted ("brutal" and "ruthless" were terms of praise), laws were enacted to sanction mayhem retroactively, and faith in science yielded pseudo-archaic notions of "blood and soil."

Hugely detailed but readable history of Germany just before the war

Perhaps the most brilliant aspect of this series is how the 3 volumes (one still coming) are divided up. Volume 1 is a highly readable and thorough account of how the Nazis came to control Germany. It can be read completely standalone as either a pure history of the times or as a cautionary tale of how a democracy can fail. Volume 3 is to cover the war, and I suspect again it will largely stand on its own given how many other books have already been written about that period of German history.

The period covered by this book, Volume 2, is also self-contained: defined by the period after the Nazis seized power but before the arrival of war swept away most other considerations. Of the three, I think this is the period that is the least well-covered...perhaps in many ways it is the least dramatic. Most histories tend to be divided up more into "before the war" and "the war" with the bulk of the first part covering the rise of the Nazis and treating their time in power as merely prelude to the war itself.

Evans covers the usual topics from this period with suitable detail and emphasis: the persecution of the Jews, the night of long knives and destruction of the SA, the union with Austria and the final stages of the pre-war period in the confrontations with and over Czechoslovakia and Poland. But these topics have been covered elsewhere. For example Donald Cameron Watt's "How War Came" covers the Czech and Polish situations in a more traditional way, as diplomatic history from the points of views of all the players (and arguably in a more readable fashion). Evans in contrast writes from a very German-centric view, which is a nice departure from the norm (at least of books available in English) but can occasionally leave one with a lack of perspective.

What sets "The Third Reich in Power" apart from previous works is the detailed attention to the social and economic consequences of Nazi policies on German life: from religion (the Nazis tried to establish their own form of Christianity, even proposing dropping the Old Testament from the canon), to education (at all levels, Evans goes into depth on the Nazi Youth, the University system, the various education initiatives), to population policy, to women's rights, to industry and the relationship between business and the Nazi party. The word that comes to mind over and over is "detail". This book is enormously detailed.

If there is controversy about this work, it will center around the author's stance toward whether the German people supported the actions of the Nazis or not, in particular as regards to anti-semitism. Evans clearly does not subscribe to the "German people as first victims of Hitler" theory, but I think he has drawn back from the "German people fully cooperated with the Nazis" thesis that has received so much attention the past decade or so. He never comes down strongly on one side or the other, and at times even seems to contradict himself. This is probably inevitable in a work of this depth, as these situations are complex and he presents much contradictory evidence: people who supported the Nazis in some areas or at some times and fought them or ignored them at others. But it does not make for as exciting writing as some of the more opinionated works.

In the end, it is the amount of detail that will make this book indispensible, but may be a barrier to its readability. I'm not qualified to rate the book on its historiography, but I would certainly give it 5 stars on the amount of data and research presented. However, for the non-professional it may become overwhelming. Your own tolerance for dry detail (I would classify the book as "engaging academic" or "dry popular") should determine if you want to read this book.

A Good Book -- Just Short of a Great Book

Evan's "Third Reich in Power" falls just short of being a great book. I would rate it a "9" if Amazon had a ten-point rating system. Evans concentrates on the period between the elevation of Hitler to the chancellorship and the German invasion of Poland in 1939. Evans uses what might be called the "mosiac" method. He examines most of the essential features in which Nazism attempted to regulate and direct the lives of the German people, and does so in succcessive chapters. This is an interesting approach -- rather unusual for contemporary history --, and is reminiscent of that taken in, say, Cambridge's Ancient History and Medieval History series. No "grant theses" emerge, but several themes suggest themselves.

First, Evans demonstrates that the German people were extremely ambivalent about the Nazi regime. On the one hand, most Germans genuinely idolized Hitler. On the other hand, they were deeply distrustful of his underlings, and of many things the government was doing to the economy and to national welfare. The picture that emerges is of a people disturbed by the quotidien aspects of Nazi rule -- censorship, police surveillance, low wage rates, labor restrictions, etc. -- but sufficiently sympathetic with the broader aims of the regime to make tolerance for the disagreeable aspects possible. The picture of the German people which emerges is rather unflattering: it was distrustful of the disorder occasioned by the regime's extreme anti-semitism, but disliked Jews and was more than happy to profit from their suppression. It was suspicious of militarism and the march toward war, but happy about the economic recovery rearmament enabled (as long was the eventual war was fought by somebody else). It was unhappy about the restrictions on art, culture and education, but shared the prejudices against modernist tendencies and agaisnt the educated elite which caused most people to shed few tears when the Nazis systematically dismantled Germany's high culture. Above all, Evans paints a picture of a people very queasy about what was happening, but unwilling to do much to save anybody else from the clutches of the Nazis. The Germans were not so much Hitler's willing executioners as Htiler's self-absorbed bystanders.

Second, Evans attempts to paint a picture of the Nazi regime as an attempt to completely mobilize and structure the way society thought and behaved. Evans emphasizes the role of terror and coercion, implicitly disagreeing with other historians who emphasize the small size of the Nazi policing appartus when compared with, e.g., the Soviet Union. He also focuses on something which has received relatively little attention -- the "dumming down" of German society. While Evans notes that the Nazi efforts to change the nature of the German educational system -- particularly its system of higher education -- met with mixed results, his claim that the quallity of the product of that system had dropped considerably by 1939 is compelling. One wonders how the Germans managed to be as successful in World War II as they were; it probably did as well as it did principally to the extent that its efforts to totally transform society were unsuccessful.

Finally, Evans confronts and sheds light on a very important issue. Nazi "philosophy" was, in important way, incoherent. It idealized men who were at once, aggressive, bullying, Darwinian, anti-intellectual, athletic, competitive and warlike, while at the same time obedient, self-sacrificing, other-directed, altruistic, idealistic and dedicated completely to the common "good" (as defined by the Nazis). It is very difficult to create a docile thug. The Nazis were as successful as they were in this endeavor by separating the thugs (who were allowed to do just about anything, as long as they did not threaten the regime) from the sheep (who, if obdient -- and Aryan-- were largley immune from thuggery by a sort of protection racket).

Evans paints a compelling picture of a society whose contradictions were bound to result in fatal instabilities in the absence of an every-victorious state of war. It is also a picture of a regime whose very commitment to physical and intellectual brutality would eventually make it impossible to quit while it was ahead.

A Must-Read for Those Who Wish to Learn from History

It would be difficult to add anything new to the many excellent reviews of "The Third Reich in Power" that are already posted here. But I must briefly echo the praises for this monumental work. It should be required reading for all conscientious citizens, and especially for all politicians, as a cautionary tale of how governments that operate without "checks and balances" can destroy the very societies that put them in power.

The detailed story of how the Nazi leaders of the Third Reich transformed Germany between their assumption of power in 1933 and the outbreak of World War II in 1939 is compelling reading of the highest standard. During that period, the Nazis by decree imposed their political, economic and racial agendas on virtually every aspect of German society--literature, art, music, education, broadcasting, retail sales, land ownership, architecture, banking, recreation, law enforcement, etc. The Nazi's programs affected the everyday lives of EVERY German citizen to a greater or lesser degree.

Mr. Evans' readable, matter-of-fact style, and his reliance on supporting data and statistics from the historical record, make "The Third Reich in Power" perhaps the most valuable work yet written on the subject. While its 700+ pages may at first seem daunting, it is well worth the effort to read. You will definitely come away from the experience with a better understanding of how prejudice, inflexibility, demagoguery and unrestrained nationalism inexorably led to World War II, and of the threat that such attitudes continue to pose to the world today. I give it the highest possible recommendation.

About the Author
K. Douglas Hoffman is a Professor of Marketing and a University Distinguished Teaching Scholar at Colorado State University. He received his B.S. from The Ohio State University, and his M.B.A. and D.B.A. from the University of Kentucky. Professor Hoffman's teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels spans nearly 30 years while holding tenure track positions at Colorado State University, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Mississippi State University. In addition, he has taught as a visiting professor at the Helsinki School of Business and Economics (Helsinki, Finland), the Institute of Industrial Policy Studies (Seoul, South Korea), Thammasat University (Bangkok, Thailand), and Cornell-Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). Professor Hoffman is an accomplished scholar in the services marketing area. He has written numerous journal and conference proceedings articles on teaching scholarship that have appeared in a variety of publication outlets. His teaching scholarship has also expanded into the co-authorship of three textbooks including SERVICES MARKETING: CONCEPTS, STRATEGIES & CASES, 5E, published by Cengage. Professor Hoffman has received numerous teaching awards at the college, university and national discipline levels, including the prestigious Board of Governors Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. He was also named University Distinguished Teaching Scholar -- a lifetime appointment in 2007. Professor Hoffman is a former editor of Marketing Education Review. His current research and consulting activities are primarily in the areas of sales/service interface, customer service/satisfaction, service failure and recovery, and services marketing education.

John E. G Bateson is a Visiting Professor of Management at the Cass Business School and is an independent consultant and company chairman. Previously, he served as Group Chief Executive of the SHL Group, the global leader in psychometric testing for jobs. SHL was listed on the London Stock Exchange and taken private by Dr. Bateson in 2006. Dr. Bateson was also a senior vice president with Gemini Consulting and a Member of the Group Executive Committee of the Cap Gemini Group. He was Associate Professor of Marketing at the London Business School, England, and taught as a visiting associate professor at the Stanford Business School. Prior to teaching, he worked as a brand manager with Lever Brothers and marketing manager with Philips. Dr. Bateson holds an undergraduate degree from Imperial College, London; a master's degree from London Business School; and a Doctorate in marketing from the Harvard Business School. He has published extensively in the services marketing literature, including the Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Retailing, Marketing Science, and Journal of Consumer Research. He is also the author of SERVICES MARKETING: CONCEPTS, STRATEGIES & CASES (Cengage) and MARKETING PUBLIC TRANSIT: A STRATEGIC APPROACH (Praeger). Dr. Bateson was actively involved with the formation of the services division of the American Marketing Association. He served on the Services Council for four years and has chaired sessions of the AMA Services Marketing Conference.

An invaluable resource for the Six Sigma Student.

I used this book while going through my black belt training and found it to be an invaluable resource. The book is written to follow the Six Sigma road map making it easy to apply to any project. As an advanced user of Excel, I found myself exporting data from Minitab, manipulating it in Excel, and importing it back into Minitab. After one pass through the book, I was able to do everything needed within Minitab. The last thing that I found useful was the number of pictures to support the workflows...and they were in COLOR!

I gave it a try and was not disappointed! The book thoroughly covers Minitab's commands

I've used Minitab on and off for the past several years. I've always struggled to find the right book to help me create some compelling charts and graphs based on the data analysis that I did in Minitab (hence, the "off" in use). I have purchased books by Khan, Brook, Rath/Strong, and Bass but still could not find the details on how to create graphs that I knew Minitab was capable of. Then Gilbert and Peterka release this book. Having known the authors from years past, I gave it a try and was not disappointed! The book thoroughly covers Minitab's commands, demonstrating not only how to do the analysis but showing how to use tips and tricks (not intuitively obvious) in Minitab to convey important statistical information graphically. Additionally, the authors provide this guidance in the context of the Six Sigma DMAIC framework by showing real-world example analyses and how Minitab could be used to evaluate the problem at hand.

This is by far the best technical guide on Minitab that I've found. As someone who digs into the details and lets the data speak - preferably graphically - this book is already showing wear on my desk at work from referencing and reading. And I just got it for Christmas 2 weeks ago.
