If you know nothing about the bad patterns we 're taught about money and sheep mentality systems. This is a great book. If you've seen Dan lok on you tube or other Interviews the majority of the book you'll already know. The last. Couple of chapters are great. It breaks down the how and is a definite path. Listening to shoulders of titans podcast is priceless. These guys lay it all down no non-sense steps. I can't afford a day with Dan yet but the value of everything free is amazing. It's important to invest in yourself so I bought the book. Don't go crazy buying a bunch of stuff. Information then application. Learn how to get started and then learn how to manage it. Leverage rinse and repeat.

I was very disappointed in this book

Hello although I'm a fan of Dan Lok's youtube page, I was very disappointed in this book, it's really like all the other Guru books FILLER FILLER FILLER, I skipped a lot of the got damn FILLER. I wanted to learn how to do some Sh8t. The reviews led me to believe this book would be different, that this book would be like a tutorial of his experience and what actions to take and not to take. Near the end of the book he starts telling us how he FINALLY made his money which was basically through his Copywriting business and then how he switched that over to writing an ebook teaching people about marketing and that's pretty much how he made his fortune thru selling his ebooks and internet marketing. The only sound advice I got from this book was to read the book Scientific Advertising, all the rest is pretty much mumbo jumbo stories, examples, all that BS to motivate and inspire you, the problem is there are too many books like this and not enough on actually teaching you the steps and right moves to make. F THE FILLER GET TO THE POINT PLEASE. GET TO THE GOT DAM MONEY. Yea I was disappointed in this book I expected more, I expected Dan Lok to be different.

Howard Zinn tackles the biases of historians in this important book. His thesis, which he explores with case after case, is that historians employ a double-standard with regard to covering history, basically serving a propagandistic role in our society, camouflaging the bad deeds of business and government, even as they claim to be objective and neutral outsiders.
It's a similar argument that's made with the media, and no less important here. He argues persuasively (and thoroughly) for a radical approach to history, changing the role of historian to sideline cheerleader for the status quo to active participant in true social change.
Because this book deals with a lot of history, it may be of limited interest to folks who aren't already into history, hence the four-star rating. But for anybody who does find history interesting, I strongly recommend it.

Essays by activist historian

Zinn makes perhaps the best points in this book early on, in his first essay "Knowledge as a Form of Power." Here he quite correctly notes that academia in America (and this is equally valid elsewhere in the world) tends to produce mountains of "inconsequential studies" which do little to add to our general knowledge or understanding, much less provide a basis for future action. What makes this statement so damning is that Zinn first wrote it over 30 years ago, and it's still applies today. Most of the essays in this book are dedicated to arguing that history and other social sciences should be more socially active, and that its practitioners should not hide behind objectivity and neutrality but rather "put their knowledge to work." Zinn backs the latter point by noting that even in the `hard' sciences there is subjectivity, which is what formulating theories is all about. Even so, several times he warns against omission or doctoring facts to suit the needs of idealism or ideologically driven agendas - in this context, he wisely includes this truism by Mannheim: "while ideology is the tendency of those in power to falsify, utopianism is the tendency of those out of power to distort." Zinn's views on scholarship and the philosophy of history are illuminating, and his specific essays dealing with the Ludlow Massacre during a miners' strike in Colorado in 1913, Hiroshima or the Allied bombing of the French town coastal town of Royan even after Nazi withdrawal (in which Zinn himself participated as a bombardier in U.S. warplane) provide a great deal of otherwise hard-to-find information and commentary on these events.

Provocative and Timely Essays on the Nature of History, Historians, and the Public Sphere

Howard Zinn has the distinction of being both one of the most distinguished and provocative historians of the United States. His leftist philosophy permeates his writings and never fails to challenge his readers. "The Politics of History" is a superb collection of his earlier writings, originally published in 1970 but still persuasive in the twenty-first century. The twenty essays in the volume range from labor political history to historiography to issues of race/class/nationalism to freedom and responsibility. Throughout Zinn asserts a radical approach to history, one that "participate[s] a bit in the social combat of the time" (p. 3). He believes that the historian should be not just a reporter of the past but an advocate who interprets the past for the benefit of the present. He confessed, "My chief hope is to provoke more historical writing which is consciously activist on behalf of the kind of world which history has not yet disclosed, but perhaps hinted at" (p. 3).

Zinn explicitly pursues historical studies what adhere to the accepted standards of scholarship that also encourages "a higher proportion of socially relevant, value-motivated, action-inducing historical work" (p. 2). He believes it is time that scholars earn their keep in the world, and the best way to do that is to cease to be neutral, instead agitating for change in the world. All of his studies, including those in this collection, do just that by telling the story of the underrepresented, the dispossessed, and the trod upon. His emphasis is on class struggle, bigotry and racial strife, inequality and feelings of superiority, injustice, and nationalistic fervor.

I found especially useful Howard Zinn's statement in his essay in this volume on "LaGuardia and the Jazz Age": "There is an underside to every Age about which history does not often speak, because history is written from records left by the privileged. We learn about politics from the political leaders, about economics from the entrepreneurs, about slavery from the plantation owners, about the thinking of an age from its intellectual elite" (p. 102). His work represents an effort to move history in another direction. As he concluded in the essay, "Philosophers, Historians, and Causation," which also closes this volume: "So here is something for us to do: we can begin the withdrawal of allegiance from the state and its machines of war, from business and its ferocious drive for profit, from all states, all bullying authorities, all dogmas" (p. 368). Only in this way can historians begin to offer a new history of the world, and in the process, he hoped, become a cause of change.

This is a provocative collection, one that should be read by all who want to explore the history of the United States. It is alternative history at its best. It is political commentary that is both powerful and inviting.

Outdated & Hard to Read

The publisher (McGraw Hill) should release an errata or a new updated version due to the amount of errors that this textbook has. Author didn't do a good job explaining some of the materials, especially shear lag & virtual work; thus the book is quite difficult to understand & read. The next edition should provide more relevant examples, so students/readers would be able to do the homework problems without extensive aid of solution manual.

Conclusion: An overpriced, outdated & difficult to read textbook. Save your money for something else.

Full of Mistakes

This is an absolutely terrible book to try to learn from. Our professor has not given us the 81 pages of corrections, so we don't know if we can even look at the examples to try and model after them. It truly makes it impossible to learn when you can't even trust what you're learning from.

A great version of the international edition! Every detail same as the regular 7th edition, just a whole lot cheaper

A few important comments about this version of the international edition. We use this text book in my introductory chemical engineering thermodynamics class and there are other students in my class who also bought the international edition and the chapters are incomplete, there are no English units, and the printing quality is very poor (sometimes with whole sections of tables missing!). Also the homework problems are different for many students in my class since the values are only in SI!

On the other hand, this version of the international edition is word for word, page for page the exact same as the regular 7th edition. I am the only student in the class with this version of the international edition (and honestly I feel really lucky about that!).

So what is the difference between this international version and the normal 7th edition? I guess just that this has a soft cover. And it was $35 instead of $150!

If your class is using the regular 7th edition, I HIGHLY recommend this copy of the international version as it has the exact same contents (like I said, even the page numbers are the same). Other students in my class with other international editions seem to struggle following along with homework problems and examples. So keep an eye out for international versions with this cover (my textbook is the only one in the class with this photo on the cover)

For the actual contents of the textbook, I actually enjoy the book. There are a lot of rigorous mathematical discussions of thermodynamic properties. The problems are pretty standard, and there are a lot of examples worked out in each chapter. Unfortunately the textbook only grazes over statistical and molecular thermodynamics (I mean really, really graze - just a few mentions of statistical thermo and a short chapter on molecular at the end of the book).

Essential reading for newbie consultants - ignore at your peril.

It's not often you come across a fictional tale about a pair of management consultants - or management consulting for that matter - particularly one as chock full of valuable selling lessons as this book is.

But Cal Harrison CMC, well-known expert in professional services marketing in North America, has successfully woven much of his selling advice into a short and entertaining story - and it succeeds. Consultants and firms wondering about how best to differentiate themselves to consistently acquire good, premium-paying clients will find this book valuable.
Marketing folks understand the value of differentiation in selling - what makes a business different from the competition in the eyes of the buyer. So effective differentiators are among the most important tools in a firm's business development armoury.

But many consultants are not expert marketers and we have difficulty in creating clear and obvious differentiation in a market place full of savvy competitors. So we all differentiate ourselves the same way and we all look the same? Absolutely not - and there's a clue.

Concerned about the time you waste responding to government RFPs ("Rarely Functional Processes" according to Harrison)? About the value of attending networking events? About what, and how, your buyers actually buy? About which points of differentiation are really important to your buyers? (Second clue - fewer than you might think!) Read this book and you won't be.

Are things like price, "our people", professional qualifications, customer service, number of awards received, third party endorsements or size of the firm especially valuable to buyers? Harrison tells you which are, which aren't, and why. He also describes how a firm might choose its particular points of differentiation as well.

One of the characters in the story says "I don't want a consultant, I want some good advice". And there's a third clue.

If you have attended one of Harrison's business development seminars you probably know what your most effective differentiators are, and why. If you haven't, pick up this book and find out.

A must read for any business owner

This was a great read. I was expecting another marketing text book with lists of "rules of marketing" laid out one chapter after another. Instead, Cal Harrison gives the reader an entertaining real life scenario with embedded lessons. He brings you into the life of two co-owners of a small consulting (could be any kind of) business and their struggles to find their way to a sustainable business future. Through the book they realize what is really important and why stretching their "expertise" so they can pitch everyone does not work.

I finished reading the book on the plane enroute to see two existing and one potential client and found myself incorporating Harrison's lesson during a sales pitch. It helped me keep the potential client focussed on how we can help make their life easy rather than how we can do what their existing vendor does cheaper! I was able to keep the new client focused on our expertise and service - not our price.

I Keep Re-Reading

I've lost track of how many times I've picked up this book. I read the manuscript to offer a review and I've read it cover to cover twice since. I still find myself going back to it and re-reading some of the lessons - all this on a subject that I didn't think I had much more to learn. You know the author's done his job when he gets you to rethink your own long-held assumptions on a topic.

I love the business novel format. This really is The Goal for professionals. It's easy to imagine how, in the hands of a less skilled writer, framing the lessons around a fictional consulting firm and its two principals could seem contrived and corny but Harrison writes like he's been there. The story is engrossing and the lessons invaluable. I know the target is professionals but there are universal and timeless business lessons here for anyone who's trying to carve out his place in a market.

About the Author
Joe DesJardins is Professor in the philosophy department formed jointly by the College of St. Benedict and St. John’s University in Minnesota. He presently serves as the Executive Director of the Society for Business Ethics. Among his publications are: An Introduction to Business Ethics (McGraw Hill), Environmental Ethics: An Introduction to Environmental Philosophy (Wadsworth), of Contemporary Issues in Business Ethics, co-editor, with John McCall, (5th Ed, Wadsworth) , and the forthcoming Business, Ethics, and Sustainability: Ethics for the Next Industrial Revolution (Prentice Hall). He received his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame and taught for many years at Villanova University before moving to Minnesota.

Interesting Information, Concepts and Cocnerns about Ethics

Desjardins talks about previous related ethical issues that have occurred for huge corporations to help individuals understand the importance of moral actions in their everyday lives. The author challenges us to question how well we know our own faith and values in life. This book is very insightful and interesting to read. I recommend this to anyone that wants clarity or maybe even to have a reference guide on ethics in the work place, this is the book to purchase.
