About the Author
K.A. Stroud formerly was a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Lanchester Polytechnic (now Coventry University) in the United Kingdom. He is also the lead author of the very popular Engineering Mathematics and Advanced Engineering Mathematics, which are also available from Industrial Press.

Dexter J. Booth teaches in the United Kingdom at the University of Huddersfield. He is the author of several mathematics books, including with Stroud the latest editions of Engineering Mathematics and Advanced Engineering Mathematics.

limited, but excellent within those limitations. Good for the how, not the why

Ok, this is not a beginners book. You NEED to know your algebra, trig relations, and calculus very well before you start on this, in particular differentiaion of log, exponential, trigonometric functions, implicit differentiation, integration by parts and substitution. Also good if your up on partial fractions, complex numbers and of course, your algebra. There is not attempt at revision of these ocncepts in the book and no appendices containing it. You'll probably need a table of integrals handy too when you work through it on the questions.

Ok, that aside, the book is purely about solving ODE's. It's contents include

program 1: First order Differential Equations

program 2: Second order differential equations

program 3: series 1

program 4: series 2

program 5: power series solutions of ODEs

program 6: Introdction to laplace trasnforms

program 7: Laplace transforms 2

program 8: laplace transforms 3

program 9: Z transforms

program 10: Matrix Algebra

program 11: Numerical solutions of ODEs

OK, the book has all the answers (not worked) to all of the questions. The questions are plentiful and take the form of review exercises (for each sub program), Test Exercises for each program and Further Exercises for each program. As far as I can tell there are no errors in the answers. I will warn you though: some of the further exercises are difficult! (we talking: multiple change of variable substitutions, partial fractions followed by integration by parts all to solve one ode!).

The teaching of the methods (algorithms if you prefer) is rquite strong with multiple fully worked examples for each concept and then questions for you to answer followed by fully worked solutions for those answers so you can see where you may have gone wrong. However strong this pedagogy is, there is little actual motivation for the work. There is no connection to applying ODE's to the real world. Also, some of the proofs are not what you would could rigorous, which will annoy the math students and please the engineers.

I suggest ODEs by Tennenbaum and Pollard (isbn: 0486649407) if you want motivation and just about every possible application of ODEs to real situations, in addition to this book. Do this book first perhaps to get the methods (algorithms) down and then go to Tennenbaum and Pollard for applying ODEs and filling in the gaps that this book leaves.

For somebody who just needs to know how, this is a good book: if you can't learn it from this book, then you probably aren't gonna get it without some help from a prof/ lecturer. if you want to know why, then it isn't so great (hence the loss ot stars).

So in conclusion, not bad. Does what it seeks to do extremely well, but what it seeks to do is the algorithms for solving ODEs, not applying ODEs and solving actual physical applications. Also, proofs lack some rigor and make a few assumptions.

Not a bad place to start learning differential equations.

This textbook is a relatively good place for self learners to begin their study of differential equations. The method used takes you step by step through the many worked out examples. The degree of calculus algebra, trig, and calculus needed is not overwhelming. A one year course in calculus is more than adequate. The book would receive a 5 rating if all the test problems and further problems were fully worked out. It is also lacking in first and second order word problems. The best answer for this is to find a copy of the Schaum's Solved Problems in Differential Equations which is out of print. What a shame. It would be wonderful if Schaum's updated and reprinted it. There is no better way to learn this material than to learn the fundamentals, try solving the problems, and then check against a solved solutions. Stroud's Programs 3-5 on series and Programs 6-8 on LaPlace Transforms are very well done. Program 10 on matrix algebra gives you a brief introduction to Linear Algebra including a brief introduction to eigenvalues and vectors. Program 11 on numerical solutions is dated. You will need to find training materials from Maple, Matlab, and Mathematica or other vendors. The Tennenbaum text mentioned in the other review is an excellent standard textbook available from Dover at a very modest price. For the mathematicians out there the derivations and theorems are more thorough as stated. The material in Stroud's programs 1-2 is much more fully covered by Tennenbaum. The issue with Tennenbaum is there are not enough worked out examples. Answers are given for the numerous problems but not worked out. I have not been able to find them solved on line which would be great for self learners like myself. The Dummies Series workbook on Differential Equations is pretty good although there are a couple of errors in the solutions that need to be fixed and the derivation of the LaPlace transform of the sin(x) could be much more straightforward. If you can afford it you can purchase the textbook which accompanies it. They are not a bad place to start and both together cost less than the Stroud text. The Differential Equations DeMystified text has a lot of interesting material in it. However,it is a difficult read and not a good learning tool. There are several standard textbooks on Differetial Equations. They are expensive books.

Guys Get This For Self Teaching & Add Tenenbaum Too!

This book is for the self taught gentleman. If you prefer to teach yourself, or are just not very good in a classroom setting, you know sitting for long hours and just listening... and for most of us guys does it's not why we picked the sciences. No we'd much rather get into it for ourselves! And this book is pretty darn good for that. Why pretty darn good vs. perfect? Well it doesn't really address the "theory" side of things. It just shows you the techniques themselves. For the theory you're probably better off with Ordinary Differential Equations by Morris Tenenbaum. I don't think Tenenbaum shows the step by step process as well as this book does. There were a couple of spots where I had to stop for a second because the next step wasn't quite so clear, but a few minutes of contemplation cleared things up.
But overall, if you really buckle down with this puppy, and keep doing the exercises on paper (not just in your head) it will teach you the essentials of differential equations. Then if you supplement it with Tenenbaum, well you'll be well versed. Better than one of the paper mill students of the modern University - unless your lucky enough to get an enthusiastic professor who also has talent in conveying his knowledge to you.
Lastly the book could use some more examples, but that would drive up the cost even more. Consider checking out Schaum's Differential Equations from your local library or school's library for more problems though. Quick and easy with the solutions in the back.

Short Summary:
This book succeeds as a self teaching guide to techniques, stops short on theory, and could also use a few more example problems, but does have enough to learn the basic idea for each technique.

About the Author

Sara Gorman, PhD, MPH, is a public health specialist at a large multinational healthcare company, where she works on global mental health, increasing the quality of evidence in the global health field, and alternative funding models for global health. She has written extensively about global health, HIV/AIDS policy, and women's health, among other topics, for a variety of health and medical journals, including PLoS Medicine, the International Journal of Women's Health, and AIDS Care. She has worked in the policy division at the HIV Law Project and as a researcher at the Epidemiology Department at Harvard School of Public Health. She has also analyzed mental health policy under the ACA for the Vera Institute of Justice and researched the effectiveness of semi-mobile HIV clinics in rural Kenya for HealthRight International.

Jack M. Gorman, MD, is CEO and Chief Scientific Officer of Franklin Behavioral Health Consultants. Dr. Gorman was on the faculty of Columbia University's Department of Psychiatry for 25 years, eventually serving as Lieber Professor of Psychiatry. He then became the Esther and Joseph Klingenstein Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Professor of Neuroscience at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Fascinating Book

Why would bright people lead their lives in ways that are exactly opposite to the ways that are proven scientifically? Denying to the Grave is a wonderful book that explores reasons behind such behavior. For example, 2 of the reasons are the “following of a charismatic leader” and a “fear of conspiracy by government and corporations.” The traditional approach of providing more data will obviously not work in light of such reasons and the authors suggest innovative ways of convincing people to do the right thing. It is a fascinating read.

Diana West is an international board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) in private practice, author of "Defining Your Own Success: Breastfeeding After Breast Reduction Surgery," ILCA's popular "Clinician's Breastfeeding Triage Tool," and co-author with Lisa Marasco of "Making More Milk: A Nursing Mother's Guide to Milk Supply." She is a retired La Leche League Leader, a website developer, and administrator of the popular BFAR.org, LowMilkSupply.org, and LactSpeak.org websites. To top it all off, she and her family raise german shepherd guide dog puppies for the Seeing Eye. Mom of 3 with severe nerve tissue damage due to breast surgery

If you had breast reduction survey and plan to breastfeed, this book is a MUST.

I was not able to breastfeed my first child because I had prepared for lactation just as other women do. Only after my baby would spend 45 minutes trying to nurse and the lactation consultant's scale showed she was not able to get more than a few drops of milk, did I realize that my breast reduction had damaged essential nerves and there was a disconnect between milk production and the "let down" function. My brain did not register a baby at the breast. It was a traumatic experience for me & baby. By the time we came up with a plan of attack, it was too late: baby was hooked on the bottle doctors told me I HAD to use if baby was to survive.

This book was heaven-sent! I purchased it several months before I gave birth to my second child, used all of their tips and successfully breastfed my 2nd and 3rd children. I had to use the SNS system with the second child, but I was prepared and where other women stock on bottle feeding supplies, I stocked on SNS stuff. With my 3rd child, I only used the "tricking your brain into believing you are feeding twins" strategy and rented an industrial-grade breast pump before due date. I used it for 10 months. My 3rd child was solely breastfed for 10 months and then he took bottles with my frozen milk into age 1 - never had formula.

This book and this book alone is the reason for my success story.

A Must Have for BFAR Mothers

I purchased this book prior to my first child being born in 2008, 5 years post surgery, because I KNEW I wanted to breastfeed. I just wasn't sure that I'd be able to. In order to give myself the best chance possible I purchased this book. I am ever so grateful that I did. There is a wealth of knowledge contained in this book. I had doctors telling me it was unlikely I'd be successful. I never gave up hope. Reading real life stories of other woman who had been there, knowing the medical explanation(s) for different reduction procedures, every last bit of information helped me get where I am today.

With my daughter I was only able to nurse until 7 months, but that is because we conceived our son when she was 4 months old. There was a terrible learning curve with my daughter. She was placed in the NICU the first 4 days of her life and I thought, "that's it, it's not going to happen." But re-reading this book kept my hopes alive. It taught me that every woman is different, every woman's experience is different. I found myself going back to the book during those 7 months that she nursed whenever we'd have "issues." We weren't able to exclusively breastfeed, but it doesn't matter. I was able to provide her with the best start for her little life because I was informed. I would have given up the first day had it not been for this book.

A short 13 months after our daughter I gave birth to our son. I once again found myself re-reading the book, looking for little tips that would help with our nursing issues. This time it wasn't a supply issue, actually my supply was amazing at first. But within the first three months of his life it was determined he needed speech therapy to correct tongue issues with lead to nursing issues which in turn lead to supply issues. After weeks of therapy and a little boost from domperidone (noted in the book, it worked wonders for me) we have been exclusively breastfeeding for nearly 11 months now. I still hold firm to the belief that I WOULD NOT HAVE made it this far had it not been for the material in this book. If you read the book and LISTEN to what is being said you'll find comfort in knowing you had the knowledge to do what you dreamed of. Breastfeeding after a readuction is possible. I'm very saddened that I HAD to turn to a book to get the knowledge that for some reason an OB's office was unwilling to share, but grateful that the book exists.

Good book for lactation consultants and families regarding breastfeeding after any breast surgery. I also highly recommend this book for plastic surgeons, obstetricians, and midwives. My favorite part is that in between the main chapters are personal stories of women's experiences of breastfeeding after reduction. I wish all breastfeeding and general parenting books were like this!

Dake is a writer you can trust to "rightly divide the Word." He of the old school of understanding prophecy in the true meaning intended by Jesus as given to His servent, John. There is a modern-day writer, Hilton Sutton, who exceeds Dake's knowledge about the book of Revelation. These two men can be trusted for truth exposed by the Holy Spirit in these "Last Days."

John L. Casti is a Senior Research Scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria, where he works on the development of early-warning methods for extreme events in human society. He is also the co-founder of The Kenos Circle, a Vienna-based society for exploration of the future, and author of the previous bestselling volumes, Paradigms Lost, Would-Be Worlds and The Cambridge Quintet. He lives in Vienna.

Provocative and appealing

Mood Matters is great fun to read as Casti's writing throughout is smooth, intelligent and humorous. The message of the book - that the mood of a society dictates what will happen rather than the reverse - is counterintuitive at first sight, but supported by many quite surprising and convincing examples. Using various indicators, in particular stock-market prices, to measure the mood of a society, Casti explores the correlation between the "mood of the crowd" and a range of other trends (skirtlengths, car colour - sounds bizarre but is actually remarkable!) and events, including the fall of nations and the outbreak of war. It is a hugely interesting and wide-ranging study. As someone with only a moderate interest in economics, I read this book for stimulation and entertainment. For those involved in assessing trends and in predicting future events, whether social, political or economic, this book might just change the whole way they ply their trade.

Lessons in Socionomics

The following review is based on an advance copy of Mood Matters (2010) by John L. Casti that I received from participation in the Library Thing Early reviewers program.

So what exactly is socionomics? After all, that's what this book is about. I could only find two online resources with English definitions that include the word socionomics: Wikipedia and Investopedia. In the Wikipedia article, I learned that the word socionomics was coined by Robert R. Prechter, Jr. who postulated in 1979 that "social mood drives financial, macroeconomic, and political behavior, in contrast to the conventional notion that such events drive social mood." In the Investopedia article, I learned that socionomics was "the study of social mood and its effects of social behavior." To illustrate, Investopedia observes that "where the traditional view would be that recessions cause businesses to become cautious, the socionomic view says that businesses become cautious and cause recessions." That's the way Casti thinks and writes -- upside down and backwards.

Prepare yourself. Casti's book is not an easy read. For instance, I extracted a randomly selected sample of Casti's prose, ran it through Gunning's Fog Index Calculator, and got a measure of 21.7, which places the text somewhere north of high school level. Thankfully, the book concludes with a very helpful annotated bibliography, greatly smoothing the pathway to our understanding of socionomics.

Before reading Casti's book, let me hasten to say that the more you know about the following topics before reading what Casti has to say about them, the easier it will be to understand Casti. For example, it would be beneficial for readers of Mood Matters if they were already acquainted with such topics as the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), the Elliott Wave Principle (EWP), Fibonacci Numbers, Herding Instinct, Ideavirus (Unleashing the Ideavirus by Seth Godin is claimed to be the most downloaded eBook of all time -- betcha didn't know that!), Kondratiev Cycles (K-waves: improvement, prosperity, recession, depression), Memetics, the Random Walk Theory (RWT), and the Socionomics Central Hypothesis.

Casti's book needs to be read in the light of two books by Robert R. Prechter, Jr.: Socionomics: The Science of History and Social Prediction (2003) and The Wave Principle of Human Social Behavior and the New Science of Socionomics (2002). Prechter's socionomic hypothesis postulates that internally regulated, not externally controlled, social mood is the primary driver of social action. Jargonauts like to restate Prechter's socionomic hypothesis in academic-speak by saying that, "in contexts of uncertainty, endogenous processes, not exogenous causes, create patterns of social behavior."

Perhaps a third book, namely, The (mis)Behavior of Markets (2004) by Benoit Mandelbrot, should also be required reading before attempting to comprehend Casti's Mood Matters. I bring this to the reader's attention because Elliott Waves are fractal in nature, and Mandelbrot presents "a fractal view of financial turbulence," as he makes his case against the Efficient Market Hypothesis.

It would also help to read Appendix A, Elliott Wave Analysis, in Mood Matters before wading into the core of the book. There you will learn about Elliott waves and Fibonacci retracements, triangles and zigzags, regular cycles and supercycles.

The Socionomics Central Hypothesis can be diagrammed hierarchically as follows:

"Social Behaviors and Collective Events"

Flow through the chart is one-way, from top to bottom. There is no movement in the opposite direction, from events to mood, and from mood to herding instincts, i.e., from bottom to top.

If this book is about culture, social mood, and behaviors, why the focus on financial charts? What does the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) have to do with rising skirt lengths and the collapse of world powers? Casti explains that he searched for years for a "Mood Meter." What kind of sociometer could he employ to measure the "temperature" of a population's mood? He considered several possibilities, including assessments of people's beliefs and feelings about the future, Internet data mining of search trends (like Google Trends), public opinion surveys and questionnaires, birth rates, and semantic textual analysis. Casti finally landed on financial market indexes, such as the DJIA, to measure the extremes of pessimism and optimism in society. Quoting journalist Kenneth Chang, Casti concluded that "A market is the combined behavior of thousands of people responding to information, misinformation and whim." Quoting Robert Prechter, Casti observed that charts of the DJIA and similar stock market indexes are literally drawings "of how the scales of mood are tipping. A decline indicates an increasing 'negative' mood on balance, and an advance indicates an increasing 'positive' mood on balance." It's as simple as that. For example, it is popularly believed that a bull market makes investors optimistic. On the contrary, socionomics says that optimistic investors create a bull market.

Does Casti make a good case for the "Science of Socionomics?" Yes. Sorta, kinda. Am I convinced? No. There are simply too many variables to be explained for one index to explain them all. Picking and choosing seems to be the name of Casti's game. Meanwhile, if the reader has been won over by the validity of the Socionomics Central Hypothesis, I have a hot tip for you. Buy stocks when hemlines are low and sell stocks when hemlines are high.

This Book Matters, Too

The latest book from John Casti, polymath and popularizer, is Mood Matters: From Rising Skirt Lengths to the Collapse of World Powers, a presentation and extension of Robert Prechter's work on socionomics. Mood Matters can and should change the world; for its readers, it will surely do so.

Over the past decade or two belief in a "rational" actor who makes decisions in his own best interest has given way to a more nuanced view that each of us has "ruts" in our thinking that we perceive as "grooves": bad cognitive habits that are maladaptations for modern man. Whether such theories are called evolutionary psychology or behavioral economics, nudges or predictable irrationality, mirror neurons or framing, what they have in common is an emphasis on the thought processes of individuals. At the least controversial level socionomics instead focuses on the reasoning of a society as a whole. Just as Durkheim insisted, there is also a collective "social mood" that can only be formed at the group level, and subject to the same kinds of weaknesses and flaws as individual psyches. Think of "herding instincts" or of all the reasons why Popular Madness and the Delusions of Crowds will never be out-of-date. If thinking is hard, read any newspaper. If reading is hard, listen to talk radio.

The central hypothesis of socionomics, however, is a much less obvious statement; that is, it flies in the face of common sense, let alone the received wisdom: Everything You Know is Wrong. Socionomics believes that social mood affects later events, while events do not affect later social mood. (I use a weak term like "affect" because the causal chain is not that specific; Casti uses words like "bias" or "slant", i.e., the influence is in terms of shifting probabilities.)

What do we usually believe? That if upbeat songs are popular during one era, this will cheer people up, not that happy people are what make upbeat songs popular. That a failing economy will cause the population to be depressed, not that social depression causes the economy to fail. How could such obvious conclusions be doubted? Casti has only two things to support his insane theories: a clear, engaging writing style, and--all the evidence.

For example, the behavior of financial markets is a good measure of social mood; every investment is a bet on the future. If events cause moods and not the other way around, then tragic events such as 9/11, or the Kennedy assassination (the first one, anyway), or Pearl Harbor must have crushed the markets. Perhaps they did in our memories, but in actuality they did not. Casti provides example after example to shake us from our comfortable, erroneous beliefs.

Why should you, must you read this book? For the excitement of seeing a new field born before your eyes. For the challenge explicitly posed by the detailed research agenda Casti proposes to further explore these ideas. And, as in any Casti book, for the pleasures of his annotated bibliography, worth the price of admission all on its own. Do I have any quibbles? Well, this is the rare book I wished were longer, but I understand the author cut some topics short to make the treatment here more widely accessible. And Casti is more optimistic than I am about the utility and meaningfulness of Elliott waves. But this is the very first item to be nailed down in his research agenda. (I note that they arise here not as part of some numerological mumbo-jumbo but as a categorization of the simple feedback systems that inform cycles brought on by non-instantaneous cause and effect.)

About the Author
Professor Paul A. Samuelson, founder of the renowned MIT graduate department of economics, was trained at the University of Chicago and Harvard. His many scientific writings brought him world fame at a young age, and in 1970 he was the first American to receive a Nobel Prize in economics. One of those rare scientists who can communicate with the lay public, Professor Samuelson wrote an economics column for Newsweek for many years. He testifies often before Congress, serves as academic consultant to the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Treasury, and various private, nonprofit organizations, and was economic advisor to American presidents including John F. Kennedy

Still the best introduction to the principles of economics

Samuelson's Economics is simply the best book available for any individual attempting to obtain an understanding of basic economics.Chapter 2 of the first edition lays out the foundation for an understanding of the different schools of macroeconomics by examining the micro foundation of macroeconomics-the production possibilities frontier(PPF) model.In this path breaking book,Samuelson called the PPF by its other name,the transformation curve.Chapter 11 then ties the student's knowledge of the PPF directly to the problem of insufficient(or too much)investment spending over time.Samuelson ,like Keynes,identifies the intertemporal problem of optimal investment expenditure as THE fundamental problem of all capitalist economies.The extreme volatility and unpredictability of aggregate investment expenditure over the business cycle IS the cause of involuntary unemployment.Samuelson then carefully explains the paradox of thrift in relation to where on the PPF the macroeconomy is operating.If the economy is operating on the boundary of the PPF then the microeconomic optimality conditions of the marginalist calculus,based on the rationality principle of classical and neoclassical economic theory,will reflect resource scarcity.A negative relationship will exist between consumption goods expenditure and investment goods expenditure.Such a smooth tradeoff over time can only mean that investment is NOT volatile and/or unpredictable over time.Private sector investment is as stable and predictable as private consumption spending over time in classical and neoclassical theory .CLASSICAL and NEOCLASSICAL economics is the study of economies operating,with minor inventory flucuations over time,primarily on the boundary of the PPF.This is a special theory that is contained in the Keynesian(neokeynesian)general theory that includes the usual case of the private sector operating IN THE INTERIOR of the PPF.In the interior of the PPF,the optimality conditions of neoclassical economics break down and fail to hold.IN THE INTERIOR the relationship between consumption goods and investment goods is positive,not negative.More savings does not lead to more investment but to less investment as businessmen cut back on the use of their capital stock in the face of decreasing current sales(and decreasing future expected sales)and rising inventories of unsold stocks of goods.This leads to further declines in the capacity utilization rate of the capital stock.The economy moves deeper into the interior of the PPF.More and more individuals are involuntarily laid off.The fall in incomes then negatively impacts consumption goods spending .A cumulative negative downward spiral,deeper and deeper into the interior of the PPF,LEADS TO MORE AND MORE UNEMPLOYMENT.This view of the business cycle is the opposite of the neoclassical view that the problem is naturally self correcting as business inventories adjust over time.It emphasizes the unadjustability of a fixed capital stock. Samuelson's solution,like Keynes's,is for the public sector to provide an offset to decreasing levels of private investment spending by increased public infrastructure spending.The multiplier process will then lead to increasing incomes ,creating expectations of future profits for businessmen.Private investment will increase,moving the economy back to a position on the boundary of the PPF.Neoclassical economics would then be operational.In summary,no other principles book(or intermediate or graduate level textbook)has ever said it better than Samuelson.Master this book and you will know economics.

The original edition is much better than the one I studied.

I was amazed to discover how good the original edition of Samuelson's classic economics text is. Virtually everything in it is just as relevant today as it was in 1948. Of special interest to me was chapter 10, Personal Finance and Social Security, for the light it sheds on the current debate about retirement income security. I think Samuelson ECONOMICS 1 ed. would be my textbook of choice for a course in introductory economics.

The only enjoyable economics text I have ever found

This colorfully written book is the only enjoyable economics textbook I have ever come across. Some things in the book may be out of date, so I am reading this in parallel with the current edition of this text (edition 19e, co-authored by William D. Nordhaus), which is up-to-date but not as incisively written. For example, both editions carefully describe the many advantages and occasional disadvantages of a market economy. A sentence on this topic from the first edition reads: "John D. Rockefeller's dog may receive the milk that a poor child needs to avoid rickets." The current edition reads: "A rich man's cat may drink the milk that a poor boy needs to remain healthy."
