Great textbook
By Ani
This was a required text for one of my classes on psychological testing. It's really a great read. There are so many fascinating topics it covers, including very mundane and dry ones. I liked the writing style and the layout was easy to follow. I highly recommend renting this book, although I did contemplate keeping it. I'm sure I'll get more instruction on this topic in graduate school, but it definitely made a boring class pretty exceptional. It has a lot of historical content and suggestions for tests. I'm definitely a better test--taker/test-evaluator because of it. It really drills into your head reliability and validity, so it helps with experimental scientific side of psychology as well.

over priced and poorly written
By Tree
Poorly written. It often gives separate definitions for terms and then uses the different terms like they are synonymous. In a five dollar Grisham novel this would be kind of irritating. In a two hundred dollar text book it is completely unacceptable.

Canary, by Rachele Alpine

In this debut novel, a high school girl faces the pain, shame, and uncertainty that come with sexual abuse. With the passing of her mother, Kate Franklin’s life unravels at the seams as she loses the only emotional mooring in her family. Her dad shuts down completely, and her brother enlists in the army. Things start looking better when her dad is hired to coach at Beacon Prep, home of one of the best basketball teams in the state. In a blog of prose and poetry, Kate chronicles her new world—dating a basketball player, being caught up in a world of idolatry and entitlement, and discovering the perks the inner circle enjoys. Then Kate’s fragile life shatters once again when one of her boyfriend’s teammates assaults her at a party. Although she knows she should speak out, her dad’s vehemently against it and so, like a canary sent into a mine to test toxicity levels and protect miners, Kate alone breathes the poisonous secrets to protect her dad and the team. The once welcoming community has betrayed Kate, her family is disintegrating, and she’s on her own to grapple with whether to stay quiet or speak out and expose a town’s hero and destroy her father’s career.

Review
"This is a captivating tale that addresses a lot of contemporary issues in a sensitive and thought-provoking way." —Nicki J. Markus, author, Day-Walker and Time Keepers

"A searing and tender portrait of the complexities of high school friendships, dating and privilege. Canary is a testament to the power of the hard-won truths." —Daisy Whitney, author, The Mockingbirds and When You Were Here

"Rachele Alpine's Canary sings the truth about what happens when we put our high school heroes on a pedestal and give them the power to act like villains." —Erin Jade Lange, author, Butter

"The subtle way Rachele Alpine addresses love, loss, popularity, and friendship makes this book a realistic and arresting read. For anyone who ever struggled with frenemies and fitting in, Canary is an important addition to contemporary YA discussions." —Jennifer Brown, author, Hate List

"Alpine's Canary is a deeply-felt, poignant account of someone trying to find strength in a world that has hurled its worst at her. Alpine has created a compelling narrator in Kate and the challenges she must face are both realistic and heartbreaking." —Colleen Clayton, author, What Happens Next

"I also admire how the subtexts of family, of privilege and how it is exploited, of bullying, and the sexual vulnerability of many girls are presented. . . . It is a powerful story that evokes intense emotions. . . . Grab a copy of Canary." —Jhobell Kristyl, Book Maven

“Sometimes I feel like I need a lot of words to describe a story and convince people to read it. This time I’m not going to. Canary is so much better than that. I need not convince you anymore.” —Open Book Society

Amazing and love it so much :)
By PandaLover
Originally posted on my blog: [...]

I absolutely fell in love with the characters in this book and the whole unique plot ( typically most story's that deal with a high school are always the same story line being that its focus is the paranormal). However, I feel that at some level this book does share similarities with another novel called Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson because that novel is about a girl who is raped and then she is ostracized by her peers.

I had 40% battery life left in my kindle fire and read this straight through the day( finished it in a few hours). I loved the whole story line and was really sad about Kate's mom having passed away and I knew that it would be a bad idea for Kate to become involved with the popular crowd ( aka the basketball players). There is almost an unspoken rule that once you become involved with a popular person than if someone goes wrong that person walks away unharmed and the consequences fall on your head.

By the way everyone that plays basketball at Beacon Prep is considered to be treated like Gods and can get away with anything ( lie, cheat etc.). So with Kate's dad being the basketball coach she gets treated like royalty ( aka everyone will try to get nice with her to fulfill their own purposes of hooking up with the other teammates). Kate's brother Brett wasn't like Kate and didn't try to blend in with all of the popular kids ( as a result everyone makes fun of him). He abhorred his new school and constantly got into fights against their dad because he didn't like how their dad no longer really cared about them. I won't tell you what he chooses to do but I really wasn't surprised of the path he chose ( hint hint military recruiters at school).

Brett was the best brother that Kate could possibly have and he really cared about her when her father didn't really pay any attention to them. Even when some huge conflict came up, Brett was there for Kate and would have done anything for her. Brett matured so much because their own father wasn't really there for Kate and he tried to keep her safe and would say things that their own mother would have said ( warning Kate to watch her drink ( that becomes her downfall) etc.).

This is just a snippet from my review on my blog

Realistic Portrayal of High School Drama
By Rebecca M. Hoyt
FULL DISCLOSURE - I know the author, having had the pleasure of working with her. Also, I did not receive an advance copy, Amazon sent the book WAY early... Not that I'm complaining.

Alpine's characters are imperfect... and that's the point. Kate longs for someone to replace the love she has lost by the death of her mother and her emotionally absent father, to the point that she makes very poor decisions when choosing friends at her new school. Her environment challenges her, and at first she chooses to ignore her conscience. Watching Kate develop - as a character and as a young woman - reminds me of the difficulties many of my students experienced. Alpine does not judge Kate; she creates a multidimensional character who learns how to make adult choices through (unfortunately) realistic consequences, and allows the reader to make their own decisions.

I've shared the book with several others, including my parents, who were shocked by some of the content. This is not a book for the fainthearted or innocent. But it is real. I'm glad I stepped outside of my typical genres to read Canary, and look forward to Alpine's future releases.

REAL, RAW, and WONDERFUL!
By Melissa Cushing
*** First I will state that I received this book in exchange for an honest review.****

Seriously good book. It is a serious real life situation, that happens more than anyone wants to admit, that was made into a great story that I read in like 5 hours. I have to say, I could not put this book down. I started it and HAD to finish it.

OK, so it is a story about Kate, whose life changes drastically when her dad lands a job at the elite private school, Beacon Prep, as the head coach of one of the top basketball teams in the state. The Beacon Prep basketball team rules the school, and can do no wrong, if you know what I mean. They are worshiped like gods at the school and treated as such by students and faculty alike. There are also definitely issues with Kate's family because they are still all trying to cope and deal with the loss of their mother a year or two before from cancer and the family really kind of deteriorates into a "shell" or "ghost" of a family. The book is written in blog form by Kate, with consistent, regular entries and with bits of poetry in between. She posts about her experiences of dating one of the hottest, most popular basketball players on the team upon switching schools when her father takes over the Head Coaching position. It is about how her life dramatically changes when she moves to this new elite school, where she is able to become this new, cool, popular kid, and chronicles those life changing experiences as they unfold. She suddenly becomes friends with the "cool" kids and feels her true self slipping away, eventually realizing she has become a shell of the person she once was...... especially after a life changing event, towards the end, that sends her life spiraling out of control. The people she thought were her friends, are not her friends at all..... and Kate finds herself in a position where she must stand up for herself and for what is right, no matter the consequences. It in turn brings her closer to her Dad by the books end and seems to start the healing process so that Kate, her Father, and her brother Brett can be a true family again. Definitely a tragic story at times, uplifting at others, but true to life and more real than anyone wants to admit. Great story overall. I definitely enjoyed it.

There are some beautiful passages throughout, one in particular that I would love to quote, but cannot right now because the copy is an Advanced Readers Copy. I will re read the final released copy and add it in once done.

Widge is an orphan with a rare talent for shorthand. His fearsome master has just one demand: steal Shakespeare's play "Hamlet"--or else. Widge has no choice but to follow orders, so he works his way into the heart of the Globe Theatre, where Shakespeare's players perform. As full of twists and turns as a London alleyway, this entertaining novel is rich in period details, colorful characters, villainy, and drama."A fast-moving historical novel that introduces an important era with casual familiarity." --School Library Journal, starred review

Gr 5-8-Being an orphan is never easy, especially during the time of Shakespear's England. Treated as property by various "owners," Widge, the 14-year-old protagonist, is forced to attempt the theft of Hamlet from the man himself. Yet, after ingratiating himself into the acting company, he finds true friends for the first time in his life. What will he do--betray his only friends, or risk his life by defying his guardian's orders? The story by Gary Blackwood (Dutton, 1998) brings Shakespearean England alive for young listeners through the descriptive language and situations of the many characters. The tenuous survival of children during this period, even in such a vital city as London, is an underlying backdrop. This, combined with the central issues of friendship and deception, provides a story filled with tension and surprises. Actor Ron Keith's narration adds a strong auditory element to the story. The veteran narrator uses his well-developed talent to change voices for the characters, and employs inflecting vocal tones and silence to craft fuller personalities. Each voice is tailored to fit the subtleties of the character, as in the wicked Falconer. This is a great supplement to any language arts curriculum to enhance a Shakespeare unit, and a wonderful story just to enjoy.-Tina Hudak, St. Bernard's, Riverdale, MD

From Kirkus Reviews
This latest from Blackwood (Beyond the Door, 1991) is a delightful and heartwarming romp through Elizabethan England. Narrator Widge, 14, resigned to leading the unremarkable life of an orphan, is bought by the self-serving Dr. Bright to learn his new ``charactery'' (shorthand), and become his secretary. Although Widge applies himself, Dr. Bright is nevertheless willing to sell the boy, for a mere ten pounds, to Simon Bass, a theatrical manager. He sends Widge to London, so that he can copy down the new play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, and enable Bass to perform it without paying royalties. Once within the confines of the Globe Theater, however, Widge discovers a brave new world of friendship, fun, and backstage intrigue. Welcomed into the company as an aspiring apprentice, Widge is soon learning lines, practicing sword-fighting, and avoiding Bass's henchman. The Bard himself makes a cameo appearance, as do other famous members of the company. To his credit, Blackwood limns just how Widge, who has no theatrical aspirations, proves a talented and hard-working member of the troupe. Readers will find much to like in Widge, and plenty to enjoy in this gleeful romp through olde England. (Fiction. 9-12) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Highly Recomend!

The Shakespeare Stealer was by far one of the best historical fiction books I have ever read. I started off by having to read this book for school but I enjoyed it so much that I went on to read Shakespeare's Scribe and Shakespeare's Spy. The reason I give this book only four stars is because the first two or three chapters drag on and are hard to get through. Once you get through Widge's life as an orphan and his apprenticeship at Dr. Bright's the book is action packed and forces you to read, and read, and read on. Unlike some books I have read in the past The Shakespeare Stealer has a very satisfying ending. This was a great book and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys adventurous books! :-)

Excellent!

I really think that this is a wonderful book. Widge is an orphan boy who originated in the country, and has come to London with the task of stealing a play from Shakespeare himself! Instead, he ends up a part of the Globe Theater “family" and learns some new vocabulary. Along the way, he learns that “all the world's a stage" and that some people aren't who they seem......
