Excellent book for anyone interested in media and cultural studies

Mark Deuze does an excellent job of providing an expansive introductory survey for anyone interested in contemporary media studies. As a transdisciplinary field, media permeate all aspects of academic scholarship and our own lived experiences. Deuze's expertise in the field is evidenced by the voluminous literature review provided, in which he outlines copious amounts of research and highlights studies concerning all types of media, from the quantitative and practical questions being asked in Information Technology to the qualitative sociological questions being theorized by feminists, cultural theorists, educators and even sex researchers.

The author's historically grounded presentation of contemporary media studies is accompanied by the development and explanation of his own theoretical position that media and life are co-constituting and inseparable. Deuze makes a bold philosophical move by claiming that media should be viewed through an ontological lens, thus challenging media scholars to move in a new direction where inquiry no longer structures media and man as distinct but rather impossible to separate. A shift in researchers' ontological orientations will thus lead to the development of new understandings concerning the way humans live their lives in, through and with media, as opposed to the historical preoccupation of questioning the relationship between man and media (hence, the man-machine divide is not longer a productive metaphor for scholarship). Deuze wants us to be concerned with asking questions such as "what kind of life do we want to live?" and "how can we live through media to create new realities?".

As a digital media artist and a researcher in the field of Art Education, I found this book to be highly useful and relevant. Deuze provides a theoretical contribution that can be used to make a strong philosophical argument in support of emerging forms of inquiry methodologies for "creative research", such as arts-based research, art practice as research, research-creation and digital humanities (broadly). Additionally, this book provides an in-depth crash course into the interdisciplinary domain of media studies. As an interdisciplinary scholar who frequently finds myself spending countless hours doing literature reviews across an array of fields, Deuze's book is a refreshing time saver that includes a comprehensive bibliography of sources. The only criticism I have is that the book becomes redundant at times. A second edition with a greater degree of conceptual organization would likely prove as highly beneficial.

I would recommend this book to anyone conducting media research, in addition to those who are interested in understanding how the media they are using to support their research process might be shaping their questions and findings. This book would also be a fantastic read for pre-service teachers getting their degrees in Education because it helps to contextualize the pedagogical power of media which transcend traditional educational settings. Anyone teaching a media course should at least order a desk review copy of the book to check it out. Even if you don't end up assigning it, there's a ton of examples and resources that will support your own teaching practice.

Media Life - Solipsist Life?

In his accessible book Media Life, contrary to what some might think, the phrase 'living IN, not WITH media' counts as argument against, rather than in favor of solipsism. Solipsism, meaning 'one self', is the doctrine that there exists only what appears within my own mind - all else is illusion. Media Life gives countless insightful examples of how the world is changing, thereby conveying a thorough understanding of the experience of an 'other I' or 'zombie-I' emerging through media. The notion of zombies as 'other I' undercuts the threat of solipsism. Deuze indeed warns against clinging to one, 'authentic' and steady 'I' operating across all media platforms. Possibly the most intriguing thing about the book is how it takes the reader into an eerie awareness of our inability to report on and express to others real, coherent and original selves - the selves that we 'truly' are. As a result, it explains our duty to seize new opportunities for facilitating more beautiful and accurate, anywhere-anytime modes of being.

Very useful.

I can't recommend these books highly enough. I wish I had access to the full set a few years ago, but I only discovered them recently on during my research on Sri Lanka and Thailand. In my case I was researching countries to retire to, buy property and maybe set up a business. I can imagine these books will be invaluable to anybody or any organisation who need to research an Asian country, but without the need to wade through lots of official sites and Wikipedia pages. The question and answer format makes it really easy to locate the information you want first, and works very well if you are trying to compare different countries, as the format is consistent from book to book. I particularly appreciated the depth of detail given to cultural and relationship matters, which are very important to an expat like me. Asia can be intimidating and baffling to Westerners, so good research is essential, and this is excellent research. You also get access to the website which they say is updated regularly, which is another big plus.

Good for what it is, just not what I hoped for.

While this book includes many images of paintings, none of them are full page and a great majority of them are far too small to offer any meaningful insight into the paintings. This book is essentially a very well written and researched collection of essays about 6 distinct themes within contemporary painting practice. It would have been better to publish this as a softcover at half the price. Eventually, I will get this book, but I can't see paying what they are asking for it now. Buy it used one day or wait for it to be released as a softcover.

Well written and insightful, highly recommended!

As a young painter, I found this book immensely helpful in terms of encapsulating current trends in painting and introducing me to many new painters and their practices. The book has beautiful, high-quality illustrations and an accompanying text by Suzanne Hudson. Most artists get a single paragraph, which makes the book useful as a reference to dip into, but the six chapters flow very well as essays. As art criticism goes, this is jargon-free and quite insightful, aiming at objectivity and considering each artist on their own terms.

This dreaded event has switched everyone's gifts. Gypsy now stops time, her brother Tucker can grow, brother Samson can start fires, and their perfect mother now is clumsy and accident prone. Navigating the new reality, saving Grandma, and accepting her savvy are on Gypsy's to-do list. Law's signature writing style is evident in her third story; whimsical word patterns dance around her savvy characters. Gypsy and her family seem to be in constant, unusual motion, rather like a Willy Wonka elevator. And, much like authors Deborah Wiles or Patricia Reilly Giff, Law contrasts warm family support with personal despair and hardship, nicely balancing her dramatic action with stability and optimism. Great third book!!!

Great third book! I admit I only glanced at the beginning of the second book and never finished it because it didn't grab my attention like the first book. This one is reminiscent of the first book, in a good way. Gypsy's character development was believable and surprisingly sophisticated yet easy enough for the target audience (middle school readers) to understand. I also appreciated all of the secondary characters - I felt connected to all of them, even the ones who only make a brief appearance. It is impressive that the author is able to create such great characters and develop the relationships so deeply in a relatively short book. I took off one star only because it was a bit predictable and certain parts seemed a little too similar to the first book, but otherwise a fun read!

Good book for young readers

Another great book for students to enjoy. It makes me just a little sad that I am no longer a school librarian so I could present this book to my kids. I know they would love it. This is the kind of book that helps to create life long readers. The story is interesting and a bit unusual. I enjoyed reading it and will do my best to share it with some young readers. I liked the magic aspects of the book very much. This book absolutely belongs in a school library and the children's section of public libraries. It is really good.

A long time ago I read the beginning of this trilogy, Savvy and Scumble. I was happy to see that there was another one, even though it had been quite a few years in-between. In that time, I felt I had grown out of the age appropriate level for this book, but I could not help reading it, because I remembered how much I liked Savvy. Gypsy has an unusual family, where everybody gets a savvy, a special power, on their thirteenth birthday. But what Gypsy got is not what she had hoped for, and as things get even worse, such as having her grumpy grandma move in with them, things end up switched. As everything that happens starts developing in uncharted territories, even Gypsy's parents cannot help. I found this book to be a sweet coming of age story, it is definitely for someone younger then me. One thing that I did not like about this book was how stressful it was to read. It was one of those books where the characters spend the whole time trying to prevent something, which can be very stressful and frustrating for the reader. Overall, I give this book four stars because it book is good, it just is not great.

A good book made bad with horrible DRM restrictions.

Watch Out!

The book uses some strange 3rd party PDF encryption to protect the book. I'm fine with that. However, I could not get Acrobat to open the book under Windows 7.

Installing the book on an old Windows XP machine worked. However, now I want to install MY Book (can you hear me Industrial Press Reference Library? - this is "MY" book) on my new Windows 8 laptop. The reason I cannot is because MY order ID has already been used (when I installed it on an old machine). So, I guess, I can only install this once!!! Crazy. This must not be true. So I just called customer support but it's Friday afternoon and they close at 4 for the weekend! Nice. So I gotta wait until Monday so that I can ask pretty please, can I please install MY book on a second machine.

If I had only known this book was so crippled with DRM (digital-rights-management) I would not have bought it.

Excellent advanced book on CNC Programming topics

This handbook by Smid on the subject of CNC programming tackles the subject from a different angle than his bestselling "CNC Programming Handbook". That book is a more basic one aimed at beginners. This book is more advanced and contains several programming subjects that are very difficult to find either in other books or on the web. Even where there is overlap with the author's "CNC Programming Guide", this book provides much more depth of coverage on various subjects than that book does. As is standard with this author, this book includes many clear detailed drawings that greatly assist in visualizing the procedures covered. Whenever applicable, a complete programming example is provided. Equations and all tools used in each example are boxed and clearly labeled. As always, this author's instructions and explanations are clear and detailed. I show the table of contents next as the best way of explaining the book's contents:

A Must for CNC Programmers

Peter Smid has not only the depth of knowledge on CNC programming but also has perfected to technique of explaining it in a well organised and easily readable book. If you are learning CNC programming, or are well versed in the subject this book should be on your shelf as a tutorial or as a reference item. In fact I have purchased other books by the same author and they all have content that I have found very useful. I refer to them frequently.
Easy to follow, full of detail and easy to use as a quick reference book.
