About the Author
Suzanne Hudson is Associate Professor of Art History and Fine Arts at the University of Southern California. Her previous books include Robert Ryman: Used Paint and Contemporary Art: 1989–Present, and she is a regular contributor to Artforum.

Good for what it is, just not what I hoped for.

While this book includes many images of paintings, none of them are full page and a great majority of them are far too small to offer any meaningful insight into the paintings. This book is essentially a very well written and researched collection of essays about 6 distinct themes within contemporary painting practice. It would have been better to publish this as a softcover at half the price. Eventually, I will get this book, but I can't see paying what they are asking for it now. Buy it used one day or wait for it to be released as a softcover.

Well written and insightful, highly recommended!

As a young painter, I found this book immensely helpful in terms of encapsulating current trends in painting and introducing me to many new painters and their practices. The book has beautiful, high-quality illustrations and an accompanying text by Suzanne Hudson. Most artists get a single paragraph, which makes the book useful as a reference to dip into, but the six chapters flow very well as essays. As art criticism goes, this is jargon-free and quite insightful, aiming at objectivity and considering each artist on their own terms.

A beautiful, beautiful book. Written by a scholar. Wonderful to read and wonderful to see the art and the conclusions the author draws from her studies and findings.
