Great Intro Into NFC Implementation
By William Hefner
NFC For Dummies doesn't really fit the mold of the rest of the "Dummies" series, but that isn't necessarily bad thing. Where this book really starts its departure is the subject material itself. Explaining NFC is necessarily a fairly technical matter. There isn't a lot of room for the zany anecdotes and regular injections of humor that seem to be the cornerstone of the series. That doesn't make the book any or better or worse in itself. It just threw me a bit off at first.

The book mainly centers around various practical implementations of NFC and gives possibilities as to how it could be used, rather than digging directly into circuit design and RF specifications. In that sense, NFC For Dummies is much more about theoretical use than it is about how the technology actually works. So, if you are being tasked with how to implement NFC into a particular project you will likely find this guide very helpful. If you are an RF engineer or designer you will probably not find much of use here though.

Sabella is great at being thorough regarding the various aspects he gets into without beating them to death as with some technical books I have had to "survive" reading lately. He makes his point, points to a wealth of additional references to back up what he says, then moves on. It never gets to the point where you feel like you have to finish entire chapters at a time just to stay in focus, but rather breaks down individual points into bite-sized chunks. It makes for a much more enjoyable read than you would expect otherwise.

This is definitely a great primer on the subject. If you are already well-educated on NFC and trying to find additional engineering details in it you should probably look elsewhere, but for the majority of us it is a great place to start.

Excellent primer on Near Field Communications (NFC).
By Jerry Saperstein
NFC is a short distance communications schema that beginning to come into widespread use.

The idea is to provide short range communication with things: payment sensor nodes, NFC tags, even posters with embedded NFC tags that provide information, perhaps about a product or destination.

The idea i stah you tap your NFC capable devices, such as a smartphone, against an NFC tag to start the data flow. You don't have to continue holding the device, such as a smartphone, against the tag. Just touch is sufficient.

The author begins literally at the beginning of NFC and move along at a leisurely pace to NFC's growing influence on commerce in particular.

NFC as a payment tool receives a lot of attention, which is entirely understandable since it is currently the leading application of NFC.

Author Sabella's approach is prety linear. His writing style is clear. While he never gets into the bits and bytes level of the technology, he does give a good overview of what NFC technoogy is, what components are needed, how they are manufactured and what the primary markets are.

Thi is definitely a primder mostly toward people who want to understand NFC technology, but don't want to (or couldn't) design an NFC sysiten. In other words, this is a book for people who want to learn about NFC and contemplate its application within their own or their customer's environmet.

For those limited purposes, this is an excellent book.

Jerry
