By his own admission, SS Kommandant Rudolf Hss was history's greatest mass murderer, having personally supervised the extermination of approximately two million people, mostly Jews, at the death camp in Auschwitz, Poland. Death Dealer is the first complete translation of Hss' memoirs into English.
These bone-chilling memoirs were written between October 1946 and April 1947. At the suggestion of Professor Sanislaw Batawia, a psychologist, and Professor Jan Shen, the prosecuting attorney for the Polish War Crimes Commission in Warsaw, Hss wrote a lengthy and detailed description of how the camp developed, his impressions of the various personalities with whom he dealt, and even the extermination of millions in the gas chambers. This written testimony is perhaps the most important document attesting to the Holocaust, because it is the only candid, detailed, and (for the most part) honest description of the Final Solution from a high-ranking SS officer intimately involved in carrying out the plans of Hitler and Himmler.
With the cold objectivity of a common hit-man, Hss chronicles the discovery of the most effective poison gas, and the technical obstacles that often thwarted his aim to kill as efficiently as possible. Staring at the horror without reacting, Hss allowed conditions at Auschwitz to reduce human beings to walking skeletons - then he labelled them as subhumans fit only to die. Readers will witness Hss's shallow rationalizations as he tries to balance his deeds with his increasingly disturbed, yet always ineffectual, conscience.

This first complete English translation of a senior Nazi officer's account of the Final Solution describes in cold, stomach-churning detail the program of genocide as an administrative procedure. Written during the six months before his 1947 execution in Warsaw for "crimes committed against the Polish people," Hoss's memoirs are filled with specific recollections, from his fervently religious boyhood in Mannheim, through a prison term in Liepzig (for having killed a fellow soldier), to marriage and induction into the SS in 1934. Particulars of his roles in the concentration camp system include his ordering of "the first execution of the war" at Sachsenhausen in 1938 and his 1941 assignment to establish and manage Auschwitz as "the largest human killing center in all of history." Personal squabbles with other SS leaders are interspersed with chilling descriptions of prison conditions and gassing procedures. This compelling historical document, from which Hoss emerges as a classic model of the bureaucratic middle manager, is expertly edited by Paskuly, a history teacher in New York; Pollinger's translation is seamless. From Library Journal
The man who presided over the expansion and lethal functioning of Auschwitz concentration camp, which surely earned him the distinction of being "the greatest destroyer of human beings in history," left behind this memoir before he was executed by the Poles at the end of World War II. A dedicated bureaucrat, Hoss smothered his feelings and devoted his talents to the killing of millions, even though he "personally never hated the Jews." The work was hard, and he "was no longer happy at Auschwitz once the mass annihilation began." An editorial glossary of terms and personalities enhances the usefulness of this valuable addition to Holocaust studies, a chilling self-portrait of an all-too-typical servant of totalitarianism.

Disturbing Coldness from a Bureaucrat with no Heart
By Dr. Limfoma Mbweebwee
There is a lot of boring material in this book, but it's still an important historical document. It's not like every death camp Kommandant sat down and wrote a book detailing his crimes.
The remarkable thing about Hoss is that he spends the majority of his time complaining about the incompetence of the people he worked with. It's as if he ran a McDonald's, and his big issue was that Shaniqua and Ashlee were always late for their shifts. He seems to have NO emotional response to the horrors he helped cause. There wasn't enough funding, because the people above him were stupid. The prisoners were neglected because the people under him were stupid. Nobody in Hitler's organization would listen to his brilliant ideas. Really, and I know this sounds flippant, it's almost like he's the Nazi Dilbert. A little man with a desk and limited authority, constantly obsessing on the incompetent hierarchy that limits his potential.
At Auschwitz, Jewish babies were thrown alive into hot fat running out of burning corpses. You would think things like that would have been on Hoss's mind as he sat waiting to be hanged. No such luck. Like an incorrigible socialist, he thinks the problem was that his evil ideology wasn't implemented correctly!
It's a good lesson for all of us. Bureaucrats have killed more people than soldiers.

It is a good "history" of sorts, first hand, of what went down at Auschwitz .........
By JACOB T WILLIAMS SR
It is a good "history" of sorts, first hand, of what went down at Auschwitz and a few other death camps in WW2 as well as how the chain of command in the SS was organized to handle prisoners and who did what, (to whom.) And, at the end it plainly tells of the SS's intentions to eliminate all 11 million known Jews in Europe including those in Switzerland per Adolph Eichmann's notes per the Wannsee Conference Minutes. I now wish all of those captured had the opportunity to write or dictate to others what really happened before they were put to death. I just finished the book yesterday -10-14-16. A strong look at the weak minds of the SS
By Amazon Customer
Hoss was told to write his life story while in captivity at the end of WWII. I felt it is an interesting story that reads easily, the reader will feel that Hoss is a personable fellow. The real clincher is that the man was a monster. It is readily seen that Hitler, Himmler and the high echelon of the Third Reich were perversed by their absolute power. The smaller minds that fell under their spell and power became puppets. Some felt the same perversness of power, others came under the total fear of Himmler. Hoss was both. Hoss set up Auchwitz and supervised every aspect of its' operation. He relates to his actions the same as if he managed a plant that stamped out car bumpers. Amazing, he oversaw the merciless murder of milllions of human beings. Right before his execution, Hoss wrote loving letters to his wife and children. This showed the sickness of the Nazi mentallity, that a man could endorse the separation of families and their wholesale murder, then go home each night to the loving embrace of his own family. Death Dealer is a definitive study of the motivations and mentallities of a corrupt people and what motivates their weilding of power.
