Truman Capote was a native of New Orleans, where he was born on September 30, 1924. He sustained this position subsequently with short-story collections (A Tree of Night, among others), novels and novellas (The Grass Harp and Breakfast at Tiffany's), some of the best travel writing of our time (Local Color), profiles and reportage that appeared originally in The New Yorker (The Duke in His Domain and The Muses Are Heard), a true-crime masterpiece (In Cold Blood), several short memiors about his childhood in the South (A Christmas Memory, The Thanksgiving Visitor, and One Christmas), two plays (The Grass Harp and House of Flowers and two films (Beat the devil and The Innocents).

Mr. Capote twice won the O.Henry Memorial Short Story Prize and was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He died in August 1984, shortly before his sixtieth birthday.

that his writing isn't just good, that his writing is so much more
By J. Steinbeck
Written with a sensitivity that reaches places in the human heart few authors can reach, The Grass Harp is a masterpiece written by a writer who could put more imagery and color into one page of writing than most writers can put into an entire novel. Those who know the craft of writing understand Truman to be a master, that his writing isn't just good, that his writing is so much more, that his writing is art. Truman left us too soon, but the grass harp that stands at the bottom of the hill of "bonewhite slabs and brown burnt flowers" has gathered up and is telling his story even now...and will tell it forever.

Green
By Cate
Does anyone read Truman Capote anymore? Other than teenagers, I mean, who have seen or heard about "In Cold Blood" and are expecting more? Capote did not write verse, he did not rhyme, but he wrote poetry (when he wrote what he wanted to write). I sat down two days ago with just 15 minutes to indulge, having pulled from the shelf "The Grass Harp" and, again, was captured and envious. Does anyone turn a descriptive phrase as he does? Does any author bring one to tears with his visual descriptions, like a painter as well as a poet? He is not in style now. He is overlooked. When they teach "southern authors", I do not recall seeing his name. Perhaps his later "tabloid" works and lifestyle eclipse him now. I hope it will not always be so. What a wonderful, honest, tender story this is. I hope it will not be lost.

The Great American Novel
By A Customer
The Grass Harp is a perfect and beautiful piece of American fiction. I have read this novel at least ten times, and each time it moves me. The language is rich and textured, the characters are real and true, the story is simple and touching. To read Capote is to fall in love with an American South that is no more- a time and place that can only exist in the imagination.
